DU, Fijis, Sigma Nu, SPEs Win in Softball Oregon State Team Bounces Ducks, 11-2 In Conference Clash Defending Champions Suffer Infield Blow-up With Seven Boots Behind Bob Hardy's Pitching; Staters Collect 14 Hits Oregon’s varsity baseballers dropped their first game in the nor thern division Saturday when Oregon State’s Beavers behind the stellar hurling of Sophomore Earl McKinney defeated the Ducks, 11 to 2. Committing seven errors, three of which were by Ford Mullen, and two by Jack Coleman, the Oregon infield fell to pieces. Only five earned runs were chalked up on Oregon Pitcher Bob Hardy. After the game there were rumblings of a shakeup which would engulf practically the whole squad, and these rumors were found to be the truth when Coach Howard Hobson fielded an aggregation ,with only three regulars in Mon day’s practice game with the frosh. Walden Catches Footballer Cece Walden was be hind the plate in place of Captain Ford Mullen. Tommy Cox, diminu tive infielder, was at shortstop, ,replacing Jack Gordon, while Matt tPavalunas came in from his former outfield job to take over second base, formerly held down by Jack Coleman. Wimpy Quinn, stellar third base man, who went hitless Saturday, was at third, while Gale Smith was holding down the initial sack. The outfield also saw two changes which sent Bob Smith and John Yerby to the bench. In their places were Ken Battle son and Bob Beard. Jimmy Nichol son, the third regular, was in cen terfield. Pitching for the varsity were John Linde and LeRoy Matt ingly. Varsity Uniforms Cleaned; Donated To Warren Club Ducklings Travel to Woodburn for Tilt On Wednesday Just as son falls heir to fath er’s made-over clothes, so the frosh baseball squad yesterday fell heir to the old varsity base ball uniforms. (When John Warren led his base ball aggregation from the Igloo to the mud-flats yesterday, it was with an air of pride. The Duck lings, all decked out in the fresh ly cleaned uniforms, could hardly restrain their enthusiasm to be out and get a little of the old base ball dirt on their suits. Travel Tomorrow The yearling squad will travel to Woodburn tomorrow for a game with the strong Woodburn high school nine, with their first game in their new suits. Woodburn beat the frosh in a game here in Eu gene this year, 10 to 6. Warren yesterday sent the frosh through a strong workout, cli maxed. with a short practice game with the varsity. Bob Reider and Orlando Allegretto, Duckling pitchers let the varsity hitters down with only one run, while their teammates were gathering ,six. Starting lineup for the frosh against Woodburn will probably be the same as has played most of the other games, with either starting on the mound. Mr. Jones allowed the hallmen one lonely hit, a double by Sirianni, while his teammates were converting 10 safeties off Winslow into n>ne counters. In addition he fanned 14 men, but walked nine, which is quite a feat in itself. The DUs got to Winslow for six runs in a big fourth inning that put the game on ice for the Tong men. Nott opened with a triple, and Lew added another to score him. Weber walked, but was put out at second, Shaw singled, Pat terson singled, Morris was safe on an error, and Maclnturff came through with a double, but was out j stretching it. Zimmerman singled and scored on Jones’ triple, and Grabb walked. But Nott ended the inning by flying out. The dorm boys scored their only runs on a pair of errors in the second and Sirianni’s double fol lowed by a walk and an error in the sixth. Sigma Nus 11, SAEs 2 Bahlberg had just too much , stuff yesterday, and as a result, Sigma Alpha Epsilon dropped an , intramural softball game to Sigma Nu, 11 to 2. The Sigma Nu pitcher allowed only four hits and whiffed 11 SAEs, while his mates were climb ing on Bentley for 16 hits. They jumped out in front with three runs in the first, added one in both the second and third, then went wild for five in the fourth. Dick wound it up in the appropriate man ner with a home run in the final inning for their last counter. The SAEs had a lonely hit until the fourth when they paired two hits with a couple of errors for their only counters. Ebright added the only other hit, a single in the sixth. Dick led the Sigma Nu sluggers, getting four hits for a perfect day at bat. Fronk followed him with three in four. SPEs 17, Chi Psis 8 Sigma Phi Epsilon collected just 10 hits off Osborne, Chi Psi pit cher, yesterday, but they converted them into 17 runs and a 17 to 3 .victory. The SPEs gathered six hits and coupled them with five errors to garner 11 runs in two big innings, the fourth and fifth. Up until then it had been a fairly tight game, with the SPEs leading, 6 to 3, but from there on it was just another track meet. The Chi Psis got to “Porky" Andrews for only two hits, scoring one run on them, and garnered the other two on an error and a pair of walks. In all, it was as wild a game as you would ever hope to see, with everything going—except good softball. Fijis 13, Sammies 2 Phi Gamma Delta pounded Bur ton Barr out of the box in the third inning yesterday, then went on to annex a lop-sided victory over Sigma Alpha Mu yesterday, 13 to 2. The Fijis collected 22 hits. Adams, Fiji pitcher, did a smooth job, allowing the Sammies only six hits, and blanked them except for one inning. He was never in trouble, and never had to bear down. In the meantime, the Fijis col lected two in the first off Barr, then ran berserk to drive him from the box with a six-hit barrage that scored six runs. They added four more in the fourth, and finished up with one in the seventh. Rankin led the Fijis at the plate, collecting three for three. Dave Silver gathered three of the Sam my safeties.
