Greek Letter Groups Pledge 404 Students in Hush’ Session^ - ’--T-rr -- -- Keen Rivalry In Evidence During Week Portland Number First; Eugene Next Gamma Phi Beta, Phi Delta Theta Lead Respective Houses With 21 and 20 With competition for members the keenest in years, “rush week” came to a close on the campus with 404 students pledged to Greek letter societies, 209 men and 195 women. Leading the mten’s houses was Phi Delta Theta with * 20 men pledged. Sigma Alpha Epsilon was second with 18. Gamma Phi Beta led the women’s houses with 21 new pledges and Alpha Phi was second with 20. Pledges claiming Portland as their home numbered 150, 78 of whom are men and 72 women. Norris Visits Mexico For his vacation this year Dr. Will Norris, associate professor of j physics, went by boat to southern California where he spent most of his time swimming and loafing at La Jolla. Dr. Norris also made a short trip to Mexico, returning home just before the start of school. Advertising Solicitors, Stenographers lSeed For Emerald Workers Any ambitious young fellow or co-ed who wishes to combine a lot of good business experi ence with the life of a budding journalist is advised to call at the Emerald business Office in McArthur court immediately. Advertising solicitors are in great demand, and two stenog raphers can be given secretarial work. Work on the Emerald business staff should be a prac tical and pleasant way to share in the activities of the campus. Botany Course Added « Field botany, a course new to the University this year, is now be ing- offered by F. P. Sipe, assistant professor of botany. It consists of excursions to the surrounding <?ountry to study the local flora. Professor Sipe stated that the classes in elementary botany have doubled in size this year. F. S. Dunn III at Home Frederic S. Dunn, head of the Latin department, has been seri ously ill at his home for the past two weeks. He has been progress ing rapidly the last few days, but requires complete rest and quiet. During Dunn's absence, A. J. Mathews is helping out in the de partment. 78 Complete Degree Work Since June 29 Bachelor of Science Awards Presented I. A. Mather, Education Major, Id (liven Doctorate in Philosophy Work for degrees was completed by 78 students of the University of Oregon between commencement last June and the start of school this fall, it is announced by Dr. Earl M. Pallett, executive secre tary and registrar. Recommenda tion that the degrees be conferred was voted at the last faculty meeting. Of the number, bachelor of sci ence, with 29, leads the list, with bachelor of arts second with 19. Graduate degrees included 17 mas ter of arts and 9 master of science. One student received a doctor of philosophy degree, the highest ac ademic degree obtainable.
