Stanford Man Takes First
Place in Contest
SAN FRANCISCO, Cal., April 19.
— (Special)—A terrible wind caused
high scores for fourteen golfers rep
resenting seven schools at the Pa
cific coast intercollegiate 54-hole
medal tournament on the Oceanside
course of the Olympic club hero to
day.
Ed Crowley, Webfoot divot dig
ger, finished today’s play of 18
holes in fourth place. He. was three
strokes ahead of Meyberg, Stanford
captain, and one stroke behind
Chuck Hunter, Washington’s star
performer, both favorites to win
high honors. Ditzlcr, California, led
the field with a 78. Conners, U. S.
C.. was next with 80; Hunter, Wash
ington, 82; Crowley, Oregon, 83;
Turner, U. S. C., 84; Meyberg, Stan
ford, 86; and Devlin, Stanford, 87.
Crowley was playing a fine game
when the wind blew his ball into a
sand trap and it took him two sevens
on. easy par four holes to get in the
running again. It was this stroke of
hard luck that cost Crowley medal
honors.
In the combined team scores, Cali
fornia leads. Oregon, Stanford, and
Washington arc all bunched for sec
ond place; with two strokes apart.
The remaining 36 holes of the tour
nament will be played on the Lake
side course of the Olympic club to
morrow. Giffen’s score today was
not in the scoring.

Delts Take Game from Phi
Sigma Kappa by
Default
Staging a rally in the last half of
the water polo tilt, last night in the
men's gymnasium, the Phi Delta won
from the Independents by a 3 to 2
I score. The game stood nothing all
| at the end of the first half, but
Fletcher, stellar Phi Dolt forward,
got his shooting eye at the begin
: ning of the second period and scored
three gonls for his team.
The Independents came near tying
the score in the last seconds of the
game when Smith shot a long one
that missed oidy by inches. Smith
scored one goal and Kirkham the
other for the Independents. .
The Delts and Phi Sigh were
scheduled to play a make-up game,
but two of the Phi Sig string were
in the infirmary, so the game was
given to the Delts by default.
