Newspaper Page TextPUD ORDER OF 'O' OOCMIIZEO Former Lettermen Meet At University Club F. ZIEGLER IS PRESIDENT Graduates To Aid Present Athletes Financially Alumni athletes are united. Re cently the University club in Port land was the scene of a gathering of former Oregon lettermen who are now organized into the Port land alumni association of the Or der of the “O.” Six men from the Oregon football team of ’99 were at the meeting: James Sheehy, ’18, author of an article on the organization in the last “Old Ore gon” says of the fact “enough to assure anyone that loyalty beats deep in their hearts—that their al ma mater was ever before them.” Executive Group Named Dr. Fred J. Ziegler, ’02, one of the '99 football men was unani mously elected president of the or ganization, with Edgar W. Smith, secretary-treasurer. They have named an executive committee con sisting of Dean Hayes, Stanford Anderson, Ralf Couch and James Sheehy. “In the coming months of the school year and succeeding years they expect to let the Ore gon campus know that the ‘old grads’ are very much aliv.e,” says Sheehy, who is a former student body president. He says “In other days they fought for Old Oregon on gridiron, diamond, cinderpath and gymnasium floor and today they stand united in backing the varsity to a return of the halcyon days of victory and accomplishment in all lines of athletic endeavor. It was the will to see Oregon win, and win gloriously which brought together more than a score of her former athletes.” They want to aid Oregon ath letes, he continued in his article, in their struggle to keep up their studies, earn a living and make the various athletic, teams. Many of them know the struggle an athlete makes if he has to earn a living in college. Stag Mix Planned The Portland Order of the “O” expects to see that Oregon gets its share of the high school athletes of the state. “Late this spring,” Sheehy says, “a big stag mix will probably be held with members of the Order of the “O” on the cam pus invited down to join in the festivities.” “Dick” Smith, football mentor and Bill Hayward were guests of honor at the University club meet ing and were “keen about the idea of forming the Portland associa tion of Old Oregon athletes. Smith was a member of the ’99 football team. He told of the need of the men on the cnmpus for the alumni support and welcomed them to the campus at any time. Hayward told of old days when board and room tft the dormitory cost $2.50 on a weekly basis. Several of the for mer lettermen spoke of days when athletics were undertaken with lit tle equipment and money. Varsity Tracksters to Vie With Stanford University: Seven Lettermen Report (Continued from pope one) south for the meet. Louie An derson, javelin thrower, was also found ineligible. In the sprints there is a group of men who are of just about the same ability. It will be a fight ing finish when they come in at the tape. Most of them are com ing up from the fresh squad. Extra, Weeterman, Stonebreaker, Flanni gan, Bossatti and Snyder. It is highly probable that they will take the sprints down south, for Stan ford is woefully lacking in sprint ers. In the distance there is a group of men out whose ability has not been tested as yet. What they do Saturday will determine the strength of Oregon’s distance crew for the season. Keating, Tets, Swank, Barnes, Holder, Neider meyer and Humphreys are the men who have been showing up th best. Most of them have had som experience. The half mile has equally a large a number of men out. Thei caliber promises to be high. I will be a hard event for the hal milers who go south for the Car dinal men are clipping it of: around 1:55. Those out are Gerkc Jeffries, Mauney, Stephenson, Sur ry, Cook, Lawrence, Peek, Buttoi and Gurnea. The quarter mile is taken cari of by two lettermen, Kinney anc Ager. They will be backed up bj Price, Wilbur and Cash. Which ol the last three will make the trij is a matter of question. The hurdle will furnish about the keenest competition on the squad ae there is three lettermen out for thie event. Kelsey, Cleaver, Carruthers Hall, Tuck and Staley are giving them much competition. In the high jump will be Eby, Kelsey and Flannigan. It will be hard for the Oregon man to excell the 6 foot 3 inches made down south. Weather has hindered this event a great deal. The broad jump promises to be one of the strong points on the Oregon team. Flannigan is going around 22 feet 8 inches with prom ise of improvement. BosenbuTg, Kelsey, Tuck and Kby are furnish ing him close competition in this event. The pole vault misses the stel lar work of Kalph Spearrow, how ever there are several who are bid ding for his place. Bosenburg, Kel sey, and Bichmond are billed to compete next Saturday. Kelsey and Bosenburg entered the event last season. There is a group of heavyweights in the shotput but as they have not competed in varsity competi tion before it is doubtful how they will come out. Those heaving the pellet this season are: Mautz, Dashney, Stockwell, Tuck, Kelly, and “Tiny” Johnson. The javelin will be another strong event for the Oregon team. Bosenburg has stepped into Balph Tuck’s shoes and is now throwing the spear around 182 feet. Tuck, Beatty, Hills and Stockwell are the other men out for the event. The discus is taken care of by Johnson, Mautz, Eby, and Stock well. The platter was placed on only one of the tryout track meets last term on account of the weath er. Next Saturday will be the sec ond timo the men have thrown it in competition and the result will determine the strength of the event. HAS SON BORN YESTERDAY A son was born to Captain and Mrs. Frank L. Culin .Tr. yesterday morning at five o’clock in the Mercy hospital, Eugene. The new addition to the Culin family has been named John, There are two other children, a boy and a girl. Captain Culin is executive officer of the University R. O. T. C. de partment.
