VARSITY READY FOB REE RATTLE Cardinals are Confident of Winning Game BACKFIELD IS IMPROVED Grid-Graph to Give Score In Villard Hall Standing on the rear platform of the ear carrying the team to Palo Alto, (,'oaeh Maddock declared that he had faith ii» his players, and then in a forceful and tersely measured voice he quietly stated, “Stanford is going to have a mighty hard time TRYING to beat our fighting team.” The hundreds of Oregon followers at the station enthusiastically showed their faith in “Joe.” by shaking the platform with sincere rousing Os kies. Team is Impressed Bart and Bill both gave short and serious talks in optimistic vein and Dick Reed, captain, declared the team would do its part. In tlie twenty minutes of the pep rally, the Oregon team got enough enthusiastic encouragement to last them throughout the whole game on Saturday. The team was gravely impressed irith Oregon’s whole-hearted faith in the squad as shown by the demon stration given yesterday, and they spent the few minutes at the station in an atmosphere filled with a deter mination to fight and give their best for “Old Oregon.” The varsity frankly nealizes the calibre of opposition it has to buck this Saturday. But this serious at titude on the part of the squad will prove a valuable asset, for it will prompt the team to fight as it never has before. i Stanford Is Confident Stanford has enjoyed successful football for. several' years and it is the ambition of the Cardinals not only to defeat California and Ore gon but all the rest of the teams on their schedule. When Stanford, however, with all of her self-assuring confidence, meets the fighting team from Oregon, they will be hit, smashed and ripped into the reality that they are playing a real football eleven. Coach Maddock has worked up a real baekfield, using Jones, Ander son, Vitus and Terjeson. Every man in the luickfiehl is dangerous ami hard to stop when he has the ball tucked under his arm. AndJrson in the end-run formation is a speedy man and generally tears loose for a substantial gain. Jones ns the line plunging fullback is going to find some tough going against Stanford, as a 200 pound line is a frightfully hard kind of a line to hit unless the men are able to open up a hole against such hefty opponents. The story of the game- -will be completely unfolded to Oregon fans at Villard hall on the big electric grid-graph board Saturday. Whether victory or defeat, Oregon followers will know the outcome as soon as the fans in the stands at Palo Alto. JONES IS HAR& HITTING OREGON LINE PLUNGER (Continued from, page one) most powerful man on the frosh team last year for he was the triple threat man of the frosh squad— doing most of the punting, and pas sing as well as calling signals for the babes. His big boot is the thing that he made his name at last year and he may have to do most of the punting this season. That is what Joe has been using him for bo far. But he can do all the rest of it. Mimnaugh is about the quietest man on the team.. With a retiring personality he puts everything into football and thinks of nothing else. Mimnaugh’s educated toe will be used a lot this season. He is the only backfield man on the team who punts consistently with the ex ception of Jones, who has shown up in kicking within the last few days. He and Stoddard form the only re- ' serve quarterbacks which Joe has i to depend on. If he gets in the j Stanford game he will get exper-1 ience that will be valuable to him in the later games of the season. Y. W. C. A. FRESHMEN WILL MEET COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY (Continued fVom page one) they are still considerably short of being a welj-balanced, smooth work ing aggregation of the caliber to be a consistent winner. The Toig point in favor of the first year men is that they are fast and have plenty of weight behind them. Baz also has a number of likely looking reserves whom he can shoot into the game if necessary. This is likely to prove a big factor tomorrow as none of the frosh are in any exceptional shape to last a full game -going at top speed. Columbia has already played three games this year and are almost in midseason form by now.
