C. H. Lingenfelter Jr. has received a “100” in a Seager quiz. This astounding news was broken to the campus in general this morn ing, and while Dr. Gilbert smiled sar donically, Jack Shattuck, Nell Hemen way, Pat Cecil and the other League “shaarks” turned green with envy. Think of it! After the greatest minds of Portland, the Willamette Valley, Southern Oregon, and indeed the whole state, had labored and per spired for years only to be cut off with mere “50’s,” “76’s” and “92’s,” a pugnacious blonde economist out of the sage brush and alkali of our sister state nonchalantly carries off the palm. Well may he exclaim with Longfellow’s hero, Eureka! The aforesaid grade has created a furor in scholastic and academic circles, and it is reported that the American Quarterly will publish the paper in full with margin notes by Ed. Himes. Since this performance the Dorm has dropped the name of “Ling, the fire eater,” and with one acclaim has be stowed on him the title of “The Sage of Boise.” Since this perfect paper has been handed out, one may well exclaim with the pessiminsts, Oh, Seager, where is thy victory? Oh, Dr. Gil bert, where is thy sting? CALIFORNIAN BASEBALL TEAM ARRIVES ON TUESDAY’S 12:32 The University of California base ball team arrived on the 12:32 last night, and is being quartered at the various fraternity houses. PENDLETONANDGRANTS PASS HIGHS 10 DEBATE This Will Be Deciding Contest, As Winners Keep Regents’ Cup Debaters from Grants Pass and Pendleton High Schools will contest in Villard Hall next Friday evening for the preparatory championship. Grants Pass has defeated everything in the Southern Oregon districts for the third successive year, while Pen dleton has won out in the Eastern Or egon and Columbia River districts. This debate is for the final possession of the cup offered by the Regents ! of the University of Oregon to the 'champion team. Under the regula tions of the Oregon High School De bating League, the school winning the state championship twice shall re tain the cup permanently. Two years ago Grants Pass won from Pendleon in the finals, while last year Pendle ton won from Eugene High. This be ing the second time these schools have met in the finals, more interest is be ing manifested than usual. The subject to be discussed is na tional vs. state conservation of re sources, Grants Pass supporting the former. Their speakers are Allen Herrick, leader, Earle Best and Helen Love. For Pendleton, James Hart well, leader, Chester Fee and Claude Hampton. DR. SHELDON WILL TRAVEL ENGLAND AND GERMANY Dr. H. D. Sheldon, who is leaving the University of Oregon this year to take the chair of Education at the University of Pittsburg, will spend a year, previous to taking up his new work, travelling and studying in Eu rope. Dr. Sheldon will leave America for Europe about the middle of July, and will spend about three months travel ing through Germany. At the end of that time he will begin his studies at the University of Leipsic, under Professor Lamprecht, a specialist on German methods of education. While studying here, he will spend some time visiting the German schools, taking up in particular two questions: (1) The organization of the lower in dustrial schools; and (2) The Ger man system of training teachers. In the spring the Doctor will leave Germany and go to Manchester, Eng land, where he will work under M. D. Sadler, a specialist in the history of education, and will spend some time visiting English and Scotch schools. He will return to America in the fall to take up his work in Pitts burg. DOUGHNUT SEASON IS NEARING ITS CLOSE Friday afternoon Kappa Sigma and Sigma Nu will play one of the two semi-final games for the Doughnut cup. The same evening Beta Theta Pi and Sigma Chi will clash. The two winning teams in these games will meet Saturday in the final game to decide the resting place of the coveted trophy cup for the ensuing year. All four of these teams are fairly strong, and all are well matched, so some good exhibitions are expected. ooooooooooooo o AN IMPORTANT MEETING o o OF STUDENT BODY MONDAY o o Prexy Collier announces that o o a special meeting of the student o o body will be held Monday, June o n 5, 1911, in Villard Hall, at 4:00 o d o’clock, to discuss and vote on the o d amendments providing for a grad- o o uate manager and a change in o o the system of judging oratorical o ) tryouts.
