Controls Shipping The waterway allows the U.S to control the bulk of shipping between the Pacilic and Allan tic oceans. In war its value is immeasurable. Meanwhile, what the Pana maniaus resent - most is that they have no real control over the Canal Zone, though it is technically Panamanian soil Within the Canal Zone live thousands of Americans, many with deep roots in Panama Some arc second generation zonians. They consider the zone their only home and, by impli cation, American soil In recent years, Americans in the zone have been given u heady taste of self-government, through civic councils and oilier measures. This has served to bind them closer to the land. Many fiercely oppose any meas sines winch would give Pana ma any control over the zone They arc quick to point out that the canal was built with American blood and sweat. Get Along Well Yet, for all the precarious ncss of the situation, both sides have gotten along remarkably well There arc no niun-madu har ries between the 10-iuile wide Canal Zone and Panama. Pan amanians are free to enter the zone and zone residents are free to enter Panama. Yet there is smoldering re sentment among the Panaman ians.
