Even if you're a farm e or rancher, your out-of-door activities are very likely less, except for stock feeding, lamb ing or occasional tote winter plowing. Regardless of whether you're not as busy or busy with dif ferent chores, winter is still a good time to take stock of your woodland. With the leaves off of many of the hardwood trees and much of the low vegetation down, n young seedlings are easier to spot. Yes, it's a good time to determine what forest openings are not restocking fast enough through natural means and ber. So, take this opportunity to note the condition of your for est lands. And, while you're making this reconnaissance, take along a shovel, saw and axe to protect and improve your woods roads. A diversion ditch here and there will pre vent wnter rains from digging deep gullies in your roads. A fallen tree bucked up here and there or encrouching brush cut out will make your roads more passable when you need them perhaps to reach a fire quick ly next summer. Mr. and Mrs. Clarance Wood ward and daughter, Janet, of; Moses Lake, Wash.; Mr. and Mrs. Roy McClellan and son, Gary, of Oakridge; Mr. and Winston Couple Makes Trip For Holiday With Relatives By PHEBE McGUIRE Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Owen of Winston drove to Vancouver, Wash., to spend the holidays at the home of their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Pat rick Alsteen. They were joined two other daughters, Mrs Nor an Rigney and Mrs. Kenneth Anderson and their families, from Richfield, Wash., and Rhinelander, Wis., respectively, Also joining the family were Mr. and Mrs. Tom Rigney of Eagle River, Wis., parents of Norman Rigney. The Owens returned to their home in Winston on Thurs day. On New Years Eve the Anderson and Rigney families with Mr. and Mrs. Tom Rigney arrived to spend the holiday with the Owens. Mr. and Mrs Anderson left Thursday to re turn to their home going by way of Prineville to visit Mr. and Mrs. Bob Lau and family, former residents of Winston. They will also stop over in Cheyenne, Wyo. to visit Mrs. Anderson's brother. Merle Owen and family. Mr. and Mrs. Rig ney and family and his parents have also returned to their homes. California!! are Visitors N Mrs. Reba Buttler and daugh ter, Dorothy, of Ventura, Calif., who have been spending the holidays with relatives in Grants Pass, were visitors in the Wins- ton-Dillard area over Ney Years, They were house guests of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Albertus. Mr. and Mrs. F. S. Lansing and family have returned home after spending the Christmas holidays with his mother in Ala meda, Calif. They also visited other relatives who arrived in Alemeda from Los Angeles for the holidays. They enjoyed a traditional family Norwegian dinner on Christmas Eve and the family was together for the Christmas dinner the next day. They arrived home in time for Ney Year holiday. Mr. and Mrs. Lindsey White and family moved into their new home on Thompson St. in Winston from their house at South Slopes. They moved im mediately following Christmas. Mr. and Mrs. Lee Stadig, Kathy and Denny arrived home Wednesday after spending the holidays in Portland with Mrs. Stadig's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tice Wagner. They spent the weekend following Christmas in Ft. Lewis, Wash., visiting their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Charlie White. Also visiting with the Costelloes were family friends, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Wilcox and four children from Santa Cruz. Calif. Mrs. Wilcox stars at Santa Cruz Playhouse, recently starring in "Music Man. David Rose left Wednesday to return to his U.S. Army Base at Ft. Ord, Calif., after spend ing the holidays with his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Carlyle Ross, and family. Also visiting the Ross family is his mother, Mrs. Delia C. Ross of Portland, who came to Winston to attend the installation of her grand daughter, Karen Ross, as hon ored queen of Job's Daughters Bethel 53. C. Valley Couple Back From Trip By MRS. DAVE THRUSH Mr. and Mrs. Dean Smith of Camas Valley have returned home after spending the past week vacationing in California They went to Sacramento and Stockton and from there to San Francisco where they spent some time sightseeing. Their trip took them along the coast to Monterey Bay at Santa Cruz, They toured the Swiss Colony Winery. They returned home along the coast route, taking side road excursions and sight seeing in general. Portlanders Visit Her Mr. and Mrs. Larry White and Chelli from Portland visited recently with the latter's par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Mars South- wick. Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Mark ham have returned home after spending the past week in Se attle where they visited Mark ham's brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Markham and his brother-in-law and sis ter, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Duncan. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Halterman and two children, Tom and Mary, of San Diego, Calif., spent the past two weeks in Camas Valley visiting Halterman's par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Ross Halterman. Recent guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Don LaBranch were his cousins, Mr. and Mrs Earl LaBranch of Gold Beach Recent guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Moore were Dr. and Mrs. Marlin Yo- der and children Larry, James and Barbara from Independ ence. Yoder is superintendent at a high school between Mon mouth and Independence. He is a former Camas Valley school principal. Mr. and Mrs. Mars Southwick spent several days recently in San Francisco on a business trip.
