Riddle Irish To Feature C I I w speea in uvl Hoop R ace The lack of height appears to be the major problem facing the Riddle Irish as they pre pare for a rugged test in Ump- qua vauey league hoop- com petition this vear Coach Art Weston states that tne Irish will be young and in experienced this year with four sophomores and six juniors on the varsity roster. He reports mac Kiame will have good speed and fair shootine hut bounding strength to become a uue contender. Despite the lack of height, the Irish will sport two of the flashiest sharp-shooting guards in Uie league in the form of Gary Paetz and Mike Mark. ham. Paetz is a 5-9V4 senior with two years of varsity ex perience, and Markham is a 5-9 junior with one-year of var sity play. Markham was among rthe top UVL scorers last year. The remainder of the team will be composed of players with only junior varsity experi ence. The taliest member of this group is center Charles Preston, a six-foot sophomore. Forwards include Terry Fos mark, a 5-11 junior, Ed Weak ley, a 5-10 sophomore, and Keith Hanson, a 5-9 senior. Tom Morrison gives the Irish re serve strength at guard. Morri son is a 5-7 junior. The Irish will open the sea son tonight when they travel to Medford for a non-league encounter with the St. Mary's Crusaders. Saturday the Riddle quintet will host the Yoncalla Eagles. Game time both nights is set for 6:30 p.m. for the Jayvees and 8:15 for the var sity. In UVL action the Irish will open their campaign Jan. 10 against arch nval Myrtle L-reett. , f ' Pat Smith will serve as Jay vee coach at' Riddle, and will assist Weston. Persons wishing to purchase season tickets may do so by contacting athletic director Al Hoffman after noon Monday. Original plana wore for tickets to go on general sale today, but Hoffman reports that the athletic office will not bo pre pared for this sale until next Ticket art priced at $7.50 for the 10 home games. The Indians open the season to night and Saturday at Klam ath Falls, then will play their first home game Dee. 13, hosting the Grants Pass Cave-men. Oakers Mat Squad Wins First Meet Glendale Enters UVL Contest Fielding Strong Veteran Five Rating as a strong darkhorse contender for Umpqua Valley dale Pirates will open the sea son tonight with a non-counter against the invading Rogue Riv er Chieftains. Game time is set for 8 p.m., with the Jayvee teams playing at 6.30. , Saturday the Pirates will trav el to Oakland for a non-league battle with the Oakland Oak prs i.;f;- - Coach Bernard Schulz has his five starters back from last year's high-.scoring team, and should present favored Doug las Trojans with plenty of com petition. Schulz feels that Doug las is the team to beat, with Glide and Myrtle Creek also fielding strong teams.'' - The Pirates will have good height under the boards in the form of Nick Derscheid and Doug Dollar. Derscheid is a 6-4 junior and Dollar is a 6-2 senior. Both can 'alternate at either a forward or the post position. Three returning guards com plete the list of lettermen. Jim Redfield, a two-year vet, heads this group. Redfield is a 5-8 sen ior. Also working as guards are Hubert Stewart, a 5-8 senior, and Rojelio Gutierrez, a 5-9 sophomore. Up from the Jayvee squad of a year ago the Pirates have a strong group of forwards and guards. Forwards include Joe Apperson, Wayne Troxel and Darl Sutch, while the guards are Clate Williams and Steve Dollar. Though the Pirates finished the season with a 3-16 record last year, this does not tell the complete story as they had a good scoring attack. With the added year of experience the Pirates are expected to be tough, especially if the reserv- chindler Wins Guesspert Title Bob Schlndler clinched first nlace in the annual Football Fol lies contest, topping the other five "guessperts" with a sea son's record of 195-73-6. ' ScWndlcr was followed by Don Kagedorn with n 191-77-6 record, Nlel Ccllers with a 190-78-6 mark and George Castillo with a 189-79-6 record. The records for the other members of Football Follies were: Bob Bcrger, 184-84-6; and Dan Hill, 181-87-6. The six members of Football Follies were still waiting for the results of the Army-Navy game which is to be played Saturday, but the outcome cannot change the standings as all six picked Navy. es come through. The Oakers racked up their 31 points on four pins, three decisions and a draw Scoring pins for Oakland were Dale Thennes at 130 pounds Eddie Wood at 148 pounds, Mike McDonald at 178 pounds and Ted Germond at 191 pounds. Five-pointers for the Viks were registered by Dave Newman at 106 pounds, Jake Osborne at 115 pounds, Henry Birenbaum at 168 pounds and Tom Mc Farland in the unlimited di vision. Tribe Mat men Host Crater Comets Tonight The Roseburg Indian grauplei will test their strength tonight in the opening meet of the sea son, hosting the Crater Comets. Preliminary matches will be gin at 7 p.m., with the varsity bouts scheduled to start at 8. Coach Jim Brackins reports that it is too early in the season to be sure of Roseburg's mat power, but feels that this will be a building season as many soph omores 'and juniors compose the majority of the turnout. How ever, some late turnouts by scn-j iors may help strengthen the team. The Indian inatiiien racked up, a 6-3 dual meet record last year not counting the loss to the touring Japanese All-Star team. In tournaments the Tribe nev er managed to finish higher than second placing second in the Roseburg Invitational.' the Marshfield Invitational and the District 5-A-l tournament, and finished third in the Reedsport Invitational. North Eugene's Highlanders arc the defending district champs. Roseburg's varsity crew will be comoosed of many new name this year along with a nucleus of mat veterans. Leading off for the Tribe in the 98-pound "bracket will be transfer student Mike Raiche, with letterman Don Langen- berg, a junior, set to do battle in the 106-pound category. Wres tling at 115 pounds for the In diuns will be Jay Zurcher. In the .23-pound class the In ilians will have veteran Matt Frcy in action, followed by John Waldron in the 130-pound divi sion. Jumping up a weight from where he wrestled last year will be Lonnie Good, set for the 136 pound class this year. In the middle weights the In dians will have Rich Holder at 141 pounds, Ron Begley at 148 pounds, Tom Thomas at 157 pounds and Mike Bigler at 163 pounds. Begley, Thomas and Bigler are three of the more ex perienced grapplcrs on the squad, all seeing varsity action last year. In the heavier brackets the Tribe will be led by Stan Rich in the 178-pound bracket, Terry Byrd in the 191-pound category and Tom Albertson in the unlim ited class. Of this trio Rich is the only boy who competed on the varsity part time last year.
