FOOTBALL FOLLIES Roseburg Indians, smarting from last week's upset at the hands of the Marshfield Pirates, are favored to bounce back this week and at least clinch a tie for the Midwestern League crown. In other top prep games the Drain . Warriors ore favored, while Douglas is figured to hove its hands full with the Bandon Tigers. Oregon and Oregon State are both picked to emerge victorious. Once ogain upsets played havoc with the "guessperts" records last week, Bob Berger and Niel Cellers heading the list with "19-8-1 records. Barnes also will make a change at right halfback, starting Gale Hickman in place of Bill Hauck Poge 4 The News-Review Thurs., Nov. 7, 1963 Threp leaeue champions have been crowned, and a fourth will be decided Saturday with the Drain Warriors going into the final weekend with high Hopes for the Emerald League title The Warriors' hopes rest on the outcome of two games their battle at Pleasant Hill aeainst the Hillbillies and the clash at Elmira between the Falcons and the isiting Junc tion City Tigers. An Elmira win over Junction City, coupled with a Drain vic tory over the Hillbillies would give the local team a tie for the league championship and the District 5-A-2 playoff berth. If Elmira and Drain post victor ies, the two will both have 8-1 league record, while Junction City would drop back to third from the league lead with a 7-1-1 record. This would give the Warriors a chance in the state playoffs as they boast the lone win over Elmira. Drain will take on the Hill billies at 1 p.m. Saturday, with the Junction City-Elmira game scheduled for 1:30. The Douglas Trojans,' winners of the Umpqua Valley League crown and one of the District O-A-2 state playoff berths this year, will warm-up for their quarterfinal battle Saturday when tiiey host a rugged Ban don 11 Saturday at 8 p.m. Also on tap Saturday is a non-league game at Glide between the Wildcats and the Gold Beach Eagles at 2 p.m. Three non-leaguers involving UVL teams will be played Fri day night, with Riddle's Ir ish entertaining the Coquille Red Devils, Sutherlin s Bulldogs host ing the Myrtle Point Bobcats and the Myrtle Creek Vikings meeting the Pacific Pirates on Knox Field. All Friday games will start at 8 p.m. In Southern Oregon Eight-Man League play two games are on tap, though neither will have any bearing on the conference championship which is already in the hands of the Camas Val ley Hornets. The champion Hornets will host the Butte Falls Loggers at 1:30 p.m., while the Days Creek Wolves, fresh from their first victory of the season, will entertain the Prospect Cougars at 3 p.m. on the Canyonville field. i Orrin Favored Drain's Warriors, boasting one of the most potent offensive at tacks among the state s A-2 powers, will be strong favor its in their Saturday crucial at Pleasant Hill. The Warriors have an explosive backfield with Mark Thomas, Frank; Backus, Jerry Smith and Gor don Jenson leading the charge. Roger Rutledge combines with Thomas and Jensen to give Drain a potent aoru'.l attack. Defensively the warriors are big and tough. While Drain is favored, the deciding game between Elmira and Junction City is rated as a toss-up. Other league games will find CresweU at Central Linn Friday wnile McKenzie will be at Harrisburg and Oakridge will battle St. Francis at Eugene's Civic Stadium Saturday.
