USC, UCLA Topple Opponents On Fourth Quarter Comebacks I By United Press International It's back to the proving grounds for major West Coast college foot ball teams this week as all Big Six teams participate in non-conference competition. Southern California meets Notre Dame, California gets Duke, Stan ford takes on Rice, UCLA goes against Syracuse, Washington tackles Oregon State and Wash ington State plays San Jose State. In games involving other major Western teams, Oregon plays Ida ho and University of Pacific bat tles Fresno State. Meanwhile, UCLA rests at the top of the Big Six standings with a 1-0 record after winning 10-9 over Stanford on Saturday. The Bruins don't play another Big Six contest until Nov. 2, so they can't be in any worse position than a tie for the lead up to that time. Key Interception Coach Bill Barnes' outfit won from Stanford with a pass inter ception in the last quarter by Bobby Richardson, who raced 40 yards to the Stanford five to set up the come-from-behind score. Southern California returned to the victory ranks with a 13-10 win over Michigan State on Friday night. This was accomplished in the last quarter, too, with sopho more Mike Garrett going 52 yards for one score and quarterback Pete Beathard passing 16 yards to All-America end Hal Bedsole for the other. I Oregon State, only unbeaten major team in the West, won over Baylor, 22-15, when Gordon Queen passed nine yards to end Dan Esplain for a touchdown with only 27 seconds to play re maining in the game. Oregon scored 35 points in the first half for a 35-0 win over what was supposed to be a good West Virginia team. Third Straight Loss Washington dropped its third consecutive tilt when Iowa scored a 17-7 triumph, but Washington State scored its first victory when Clarence Williams raced 75 yards for a touchdown that stood up in a 7-2 victory over Arizona State. California's Jim Blakency raced the opening kiekoff back 85 yards for a touchdown, but that was just about the end of the Golden Bear offense as Pittsburgh took a 35-15 victory. (UPI Telephoto) Beavers Edge PORTLAND (UPI) Quartcr-'i back Gordon Queen lost a passing battle with Baylor's Don Truil Saturday night, but he won the war with a last-minute touchdown pass that gave Oregon State a 22-15 football victory. Queen, who completed 11 of 22 passes for 191 yards, hit Danny Eapalin on a nine - yard scoring pass with 27 seconds left to give the unbeaten Beavers their third win of the year and their 10th in a row. Trull, perhaps the best profes sional prospect in the country, picked the OSU defenses apart with 16 completions in 2? attempts for 246 yards,' but a defensive maneuver concocted by Beaver coach Tommy Prothro undid him. Trull had passed the Bears back from a 15-0 deficit to tie the score early in the third quar ter. The Bears marched 68 yards with the second-half kiekoff for the tying points, scored on a one yard plunge by Trull. The Bears moved into touch down territory again in the fourth period, when Prothro's strategy of luring Trull into throwing into the flat instead of down the middle for a 20-0 victory over the Spar tans. "Our speed and passing attack were the key factors," Coach Len Casanova said after his Ducks raced past West Virginia 35-0 on the latter's field at Morgantown Saturday. "They were pretty slow," he continued. "We figured we could pass on them and it worked. It was easier than we expected, though." Junior quarterback Bob Berry Linfield Wins Again LC Tops Willamette By United Press International Linfield opened defense of its Northwest Conference football championship by rolling over Col lege of Idaho 19-0 at Caldwell Sat urday night. " It was the Wildcats1 24th straight regular season victory. Lewis and Clark, rated as a threat to end Linfield's domina tion in the conference this season, walloped Willamette 41-13 at Sa lem and Pacific edged Whitman 21-20 at Walla Walla. Linfield meets Lewis and Clark in Portland next Saturday. Defending champion Southern Oregon defeated Oregon College of Education 33-0 at Ashland and Portland State trounced Eastern Oregon 38-0 at Portland in opening games. Sophomore Tim Osmer, playing in place of the injured Jim Sin yard, picked off a Trull pass on the Beaver 2 and returned it 59 yards. Defense "Invited" Past ' "We set out defenses to invite that sideline pass," assistant coach Jerry Long said. "If he'd thrown up the middle he couldn't have helped but score." The Beavers didn't score on that break, but they got the ball again with 66 yards to go and only 4:09 left. A 15-yard penalty set OSU back to its 19, and Queen took over. He hit Vcrn Burke for 17, Es palin for 12, Doug McDougal for 19 and 13, and finally Espalin again for 9 and the touchdown. Espalin, the smallest man on the field at 5-8 and 167, grabbed the ball on the five, fumbled it on the two, and then fell on it in the end zone. ' "I also thought we played well defensively," Casanova said. "We had our lapses but, when we needed it, the defense was tough." The Ducks took a 7-0 lead in the first period on a 3-yard touch down run by halfback Dennis Keller. They added four more touch downs in the second period on 1-yard runs by Mel Renfro and Berry, a 59-yard pass from Berry to Keller and a 38-yard pass in terception runback by halfback Ron Martin. Buck Corey kicked the extra points after the first four touch downs and Renfro added the final conversion. West Virginia Coach Gene Corum said: "Oregon was too fast, too quick, too tough and there were too many of them. End Dick Imwalle, Renfro and Keller turned in outstanding per formances. Imwalle caught four passes for 78 yards. Renfro made 24 yards in seven carries, caught three passes for 67 yards and completed a pass for 11 yards. Keller ran for 34 yards in seven carries and caught the one pass for 59 yards. Jack Sovengn.now the second string Duck quarterback following Doug Post s injury, got a chance to play much of the second half on offense and performed well. Oregon will meet Idaho at Eu gene next Saturday afternoon. The Vandals also have a 2-1 record. Lakers Nip Warriors In Hoop Exhibition HONOLULU (UPI) The Los Angeles Lakers closed out their exhibition series here with a 102 101 victory over the San Francis co Warriors Sunday night. The Lakers held a 13-point lead in the closing minutes of the third period: only to see the Warriors rally and tie it at 99-99 on Wilt Chamberlain's free throw with 1:29 left in the game. . . A free throw by Rudy LaRusso at 1:12 and two free fhrows by Jerry West in the last three sec onds iced the Los Angeles vic tory. Chamberlain scored 43 points for high-point honors. West led the Lakers in scoring with 23 and Dick Barnett had 20. 4 drive in the second period to make it 15-0. Trull took one play to get that score back. He hit Lawrence El- kins on an 80-yard scoring play to make it 15-6 and Tom Davies booted a 28-yard field goal with 15 seconds left in the half. Trull got the equalizer on the third-quarter drive and that set the stage for Queen's last-minute heroics. "His poise was very good and his play selection was excellent," proinro said of tin quarterback. Winless Washington is next for the Beavers at Seattle, and OSU hasn t lost since it played the Huskies Jast year. Dan Forrest accounted for the six points, when he swept left end for the final two yards. forrest also ran left end for the extra point. Saturday s triumph was a costly one for the Wildcats, as quarter back Wade Sumpter was lost for the season. Sumpter was injured LSU, Northwestern Upset By Opponent By United Press Intarnational ; Even Darrell Royal, the old Ok lahoma quarterback, will tell you that there s not much in a name. Royal watched his Texas Long horns crush Oklahoma State, 34-7, Saturday night. That plus the fact that Texas is the third-ranked col lege football team in the nation should be enough to make a man reasonably happy. But Royal has a big job facing him this weekend when Texas tangles . with a "sound alike" team from the University of Ok' lahoma. The name is the only re semblance between the two teams, however, because Bud Wil kinson's eleven is the No. 1 team in the country. Yet Texas has treated the Sooners much like its cross-state rivals of late, scoring five consec utive wins over Wilkinson's teams in the six years of Royal's ten ure. Crosby Provided Punch Tony Crosby, a stocking-footed placement kicker, provided most of the Longhorns' offensive punch with two field goals of 32 and 33 yards and four extra points. Ok lahoma was idle last weekend. Alabama, second-rated national ly, was supposed to have a warm up of its own but had to shake loose sophomore halfback Benny Nelson for long touchdown runs of 97 and 50 yards to defeat win less Vanderbilt, 21-6. Illinois, which hasn t seen first place daylight in the Big Ten in 10 years, supported its darkhorse role in the conference by topping the Wildcats, the league favorite. The kicking of Jim Plankcnhorn, who booted a field goal and a very important extra point, plus a few Northwestern mistakes till ed the Ulini's record to 2-0. Billy Lothridge, Georgia Tech's multi-talented quarterback, kicked two field goals for the Engineers but it was not enough as tne stout Tech defense surrendered its first touchdown of the year. Sumpter is lost for the re mainder of the football season, and may miss part of the basketball season. Steve Anderson, calling the sig nals for the first time, took over and led the scrappy Wildcats to the homecoming victory. Markham will miss several games because of an injury sus tained in the Riddle-Gold Beach battle. In Saturday's came, both teams threatened, with the Irish ncnetrat- ing to the Glide 16-yard line in ine nrst quarter, and to the 17 la ter in the first half. Early in the third quarter a fum ble recovered by Glide's Stan Young gave the Wildcats the ball on the Riddle 23, but four plays later mey were a yard snort ot a first down. In the final 12 min - utes the Wildcats had thines nret- ty much their way, knocking at the gate several times, but only scor ing once. The victory gives Glide a 1-0 mark, ,and a season's record of 1-2-1. Riddle has now lost three in a row, and starts off the confer ence play in the hole, 0-1. Riddle held a 12-10 advantage on first downs, getting two as the re sult of penalties. The Wildcats gained 161 yards rushing and Rid dle was credited with 131 yards. Through' the' air the 'Cats did not have a completion on four at tempts', while the Irish complet ed two of eight tosses for nine yards. Young intercepted a Riddle pass from the winners. Funting the Wildcats booted the pigskin three times for an average of 27.7 yards-per-kick, while Riddle kicked once for 24 yards. Glide lost one fumble and Riddle turn ed the ball over to the home team three times on bobbles. Glide had five penalties for 35 yards and Rid dle had four for 38 yards. The Broncos "busted out" Sun day with a' 24-point final period that knocked the hitherto unde feated San Diego Chargers reel ing, 50-34, while the Kansas City Chiefs made an impressive for mal debut in their new home by beating the Houston Oilers, 28-7. On Saturday night, the Jets wi dened their first-place lead in the Eastern Division by beating the Boston Patriots, 31-24, and the Buf falo Bills scored their first vic tory of the season, topping the Oakland Raiders, 12-0. Gene Mingo set an AFL record of five field goals in the Bron cos' upset victory over the Charg ers before 18,428 fans at Denver. Mingo's kicks travelled 37, 41, 26, 13 And 21 varrlK. Mingo's three third-period field goais enabled the Broncos to ov- ercome a 20-17 haltume deficit and move ahead, 26-20. John Hadl's 19-yard scoring pass to Keith Lincoln, put San Diego in front again, only to have Denver explode with a Z4-point . spree within five minutes of the last period. John Mccormick hit Lionel Tay lor with a 49-yard scoring pass; Don Stone ran 39 yards from scrimmage and Austin Gonsoulin raced 49 yards with an intercept ed pass for three quick touch downs that sent the Chargers down to their first defeat in four games. Len Dawson passed for all four of the Chiefs touchdowns in the victory over the Oilers before a crowd of 27,801 at Kansas City. Dawson passed 14 and four yards to Fred Arbanas, 69 yards to Chris Burford and eight yards to Frank Jackson. The rampaging Trojans, favored to win the UVL this year, fell be hind in the onenina Dcriod when Sutherlin's Don Goertzen grabbed a punt and raced 77 yards for a TD. Alan Grant powered his way over for the PAT. From this point on the invading Bulldogs were blanked, while the Trojans racked up 20 points in tlio second quarter. Early in the second auarter Dan Withers capped a long drive with a one-yard plunge. When the ex tra point attempt went astray, the Trojans still trailed by one point. However, this did not last as Pat Patterson picked off a Sutherlin pass and raced 17 yards to pay dirt for the go-ahead tally. Gary Brown kicked the extra point. The Trojans, in posting the vic tory, sport a 1-0 league record and are tied with Glide and Myrtle Creek for the UVL lead. For the season Douglas has a 3-1 record. Douglas held a 9-5 advantage in first downs over the Bulldogs. Rushing yardage found the win ners getting 100 yards and Suther nn picked up 61 yards on the ground. Through the air the Tro jans had 78 yards on three comple tions for 12 attempts. Sutherlin completed eight of 14 passes for 74 yards. The Trojans had the lone interception of the game. Fuming Douglas averaged 26.3 yards per kick on six tries, while buuicrhn punted six limes tor a 20-yard average. The Bulldogs lost one fumble, and were penalized six times for -53 yards.
