I won first prize and another woman won second prize. When we opened our prizes hers was so superior to the little doodad that I won for first prize that I felt terribly cheated. Every one present commented on the nice prize she had won. Don't you think the winner of the second prize should have said, "There must be some mistake"? DISAPPOINTED DEAR DISAPPOINTED: Not necessarily. If the hostess, who had bought the prizes, did not indi cate that a "mistake" had been made, perhaps there was no mis take. The "dragon like creature" lives in Siberia's Lake Labynkyr and "has frequently been seen by local inhabitants." "On one occasion the monster swallowed a hunter's dog," the broadcaster, a student of biology at Moscow State University said. He cited monster sightings in the west including one off Brazil and in Loch Ness and said an expedition had gone to Lake Labynkyr and will return next month. As it was, the three-spade bid put pressure on North, but he came through nobly, or at least suc cessfully. He bid four clubs on a three card suit, and jumped to six hearts after getting a raise to five. West opened the ace of spades and after ruffing with the deuce of trumps, South went Into a long hud dle to plan his play. If you look at all the cards you can see that sev eral lines of play will work, but South could not see the East-West cards. He decided that it would be just too hard to make the hand against a 4-1 trump split, but that he would have no trouble against a 3-2 split, provided all the clubs weren't bunched in the East hand, and that West did not hold four to the jack. , After this decision play went quickly. South came to his hand with a club, ruffed a second spade in dummy, cashed dummy's king of trumps, overtook the queen with his ace, pulled East's last trump with his ten-spot, and led a club to dummy's king. The two believe the national spurt in both gallery visiting and in art purchasing are the results of several factors. "There's no doubt that there is an aura originating from the White House," said Mrs. Kaplan, referring to Mrs. John F. Ken nedy's restoration project for the executive mansion meeting. She will be assisted by Mrs. Jack Mon- j ton, education director for the Eu gene Laubach Program. The members of the council have been very successful in teaching functional illiterates in the Eugene area to read by using the Lau bach method of teaching, church spokesmen state. Dr. Laubach has been successful in teaching illiter ates in 100 countries and in 300 lan guates it is reported. It is a pro gram to help adults who wish to learn to read. There are reported ly 33,000 functional illiterates in the state of Oregon and an estimated 2,234 in Douglas County. This pro gram is designed to reach these people by an "Each One, Teach One" method. The Roseburg pastor, the Rev. Howard W. Levered, and Mrs. La vclle Bishop, president of the local missionary society, invite the pub lic to attend this special program. The fire started from controlled burning being done by McDonald Logging Co., which was clearing a right-of-way for Bonneville Pow er Administration. It raged across a rugged area of brushland, scrub oak and timber from 4 p.m. Sat urday until firefighters managed to get a line around it about 2:30 a.m. Sunday. Bulldozers were thrown inlo the battle at dawn, but most of the work had to be done on foot be cause of the rough terrain. Another fire which charred 1,200 acres near the Oregon line in Owyhee County, Idaho, was con trolled Sunday. The fire was cen tered about 10 miles east of Jor dan Valley, Ore.
