Di-mi Cards, Dodgers Continue ML Battle By United Prets International The St. Louis Cardinals are us ing the Los Angeles Dodgers' own most potent weapon pitch ing to cling to the front-runners' coattails in the National League pennant race. Pitching has been the Cardin als' most serious problem all sea son but it's suddenly jelled and just at the right time if the Kcdbirds are going to overtake the Dodgers, whose once-proud staff is beginning to get the blind staggers in the stretch. The Cardinal staff turned in its third consecutive shutout when Ray Sadecki and Ron Taylor combined in a five-hitter Wednes day night for a 4-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs. The win en abled the Cardinals to remain three games behind the winning Dodgers and made it 14 victories in their last IS games for Johnny Keane's fast-closing team. The Dodgers again got shaky pitching from ace Don Drysdale but reached into their bullpen for the necessary relief aid as they downed the Pittsburgh Pirates, 9-4, and eliminated them from the race. Sandy Koufax is the only Dodg er pitcher who has gone the dis tance in the 11 games played gy Los Angeles this month. During the same period the Cardinals have had six complete games from among three different pitch ers. Giants Lose Again . The New York Mets pushed the fnriincf San FmnpUm Giants an other step toward extinction, 4-2, the Cincinnati Keas rouiea me Milwaukee Braves, 14-3, and the Houston Colts nicked the Phila Helnhia Phillips 4-2. in other Na tional League games Sadecki went 5 2-3 innings to win his ninth game for the Car dinals, with Taylor holding the Cubs to one hit over the final 3 1-3. Stan Musial's sacrifice fly and an infield out produced two St. Louis runs in the fourth in ning and Mike Shannon hit his first major league homer to drive in the other pair in the eighth. Dick Ellsworth suffered his ninth loss against 20 victories. Maury Wills had four hits and Frank Howard and Ken McMul len two each as the Dodgers rat tled out 13 hits. frw-v eT" - -I OH! 1481 N.E.
