The Swing Club that participates in the VA Voluntary Services at Roseburg was the winner of this year's traveling trophy for outstanding services to hospitalized veterans in the golf program and other programs at the hospital. Mrs. Buckley Bell, who is a med ical patient at Douglas Community Hospital, is reported to be in trac tion for a slipped disc. She expects to be in the hospital another week. Col. and Mrs. James K. Gray and family, who moved here from Syracuse, N.Y., are making their home at 1125 SE Main St. Gray is the new health officer for Doug las County. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Krusee and daughter have moved here from Casper, Wyo., and are residing at 509 W. Umpqua St. Krusee is with Pacific Power and Light Co. Gordon Smith returned to his home here Thursday night, follow ing a trip to San Francisco to at tend the showing df the new 1964 Ford automobiles. Mrs, Carl M. Teegue and Mrs. Gordon Smith and son, Steve, have spent the week in Portland, where the latter participated in the jun ior national golf tournament. Mr. and Mrs. Daniel T. Brice and sons, Kerry, Gavin and Rory, of Long Beach, Calif., are visiting in Roseburg at the home of the former's cousin, Dr. .Henry Hirsch man, and family. Mr. and Mrs. Ben L. Ross have moved from Cottage Grove to 329 SE Rose St. in Roseburg. Ross is with the Douglas County Welfare and his wife is a teacher in the county school system. Park, Lake Louise and Banff and will stop over "at Medicine Hat to visit relatives. epi. 2, 13 Farm Safety Program Due Paul W. Sliepard, farm safety representative for the state of Ore gon Industrial Accident Commis sion, was in Roseburg earlier this week in the interest of inaugura ting a farm safety program in Douglas County. He stated he was requesting that farm safety groups be organized and that they put on farm safety programs between Oct. IS and the busy spring months. Safety kits with information on setting up complete programs are being sent out to vocational agri culture instructors and others con nected with farm activities. He stated tiiat safety model building has been -added to the 1904 State Fair .awards list. The models should show something per taining to critical moments in farm accidents, accompanied by a card telling circumstances leading up to the accident. Farming, by law, is no hazard ous, so the Industrial Accident Commission has no jurisdiction. The safety program being intro duced is of an educational nature. METHODIST MEN MEET The Rev. Ted Shirakawa, associ ate minister of the Roseburg First Methodist Church, gave a talk on church missions at the recent meet ing of the Methodist Men's Club held at the church. Shirakawa's talk included comments on religion as it exists in Japan today. A dinner served by William Kis singer preceded the meeting. Mike Jacoby, who has been com pleting his studies in the school of architecture at University of Ore gon, is spending the weekend here visiting his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Jacoby. Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Hill and son, Tony, and Mrs. Emma Rietmann have returned from Mt. Shasta, Calif., where they visited two days with the Hills' son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Larry Lane, and children, Tracy, Barry and Todd. Miss Susan Bernholi, recently of Long Island, N.Y., will be making her permanent home with her fath er, John P. Bernholz, and his wife, Jeanne, at 99 A Whistler s Lane. She will be attending Glide High School. John Bernholz is a well known Roseburg abstract artist. Susan has been spending the sum mer at the Bernholz home. Mrs. Edna McKean of this city has returned home following two- week visit in Portland with her son, John McKean, and family, and a trip to Canadian and coastal points. Mrs. McKean was joined at her son's home by her sisters, Mrs. Edmond Pedro of El Ccrito, Calif., and Mrs. Charles Hurst of Angwin, Calif. The three sisters went on to Victoria, B.C., and came back down the coast to spenda few days at Nelscott. The California visitors have since left for their homes after spending a few days in Roseburg with Mrs. McKean and visiting here with other relatives and friends. For the first time, winner of the Glendale Kindergarten Has Openings Available There is still room for further registration in the Glendale Chris tian Kindergarten which is sched uled to begin on Sept. 3 at the Glendale Assembly of God Church. According to the Rev. Robert Hutchinson, pastor of the sponsor ing chumh, the classes follow a prescribed state curriculum and are open to all area youngsters in the kindergarten age bracket. Classes will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on regular school days. Registration may be made by calling the Rev. Mr. Hutchinson, director, or Miss Kay Hubler, teacher. OAKLAND CHANGE MADE William Ambrose is taking the place of Darrcll Langevin as prin cipal of Oakland High School. This year's winner, a four-year-old half Arabian, half quarter horse mare, "Goldie," owned by 4-Her Bob Reinert, 15, of Melrose, will in addition to her championship ribbons, benefit from breeding with "Bay Toad," quarter horse owned by Mr. and Mrs. Zip Lemke of Suthcrlin. Bay Toad, sired by Thadius Toad out of Dame Miss Laurel, in July of this year was junior champion at the Yreka, Calif., Quarter Horse Show and in August was reserve grand cham pion at a quarter horse show in Grants .Pass. At the Roseburg Quarter' Horse Show in April, Bay Toad was sixth in his class. According to Mr. and Mrs. Lcin kc, the free breeding award was instituted by them in line with such awards offered at other fairs throughout the state. It is the first time such an award has been made at the Douglas County Fair, and according to the , Lemkes, it is honed that similar such offers will courage young horsemen to im-! prove their stock. Young Reinert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Reinert of Melrose, is a member of the Silver Spurs, 4-H horsemanship club, and has been active in horsemanship cir cles for the past two years.
