(News-Review photo) Perennial - Dividing Time On Hand FROM LOOKINGGLASS CLUB Now is the time for all good gardeners to be thinking about perennials. There are literally hun dreds ot different varieties and most gardens could' benefit by the addition o': a few. .Although many do not have an exceptionally long season of bloom, some are so spectacular and so varied in form and color, that they will be very worthwhile additions to any gar den. Add New Varieties ' Everyone knows and loves the beautiful peonies, iris, delphinium and daylilies, but there are many other less common ones that could be used to great advantage. Why not look over your garden and de cide where you might add a few. Then tour some nurseries and friends' gardens and get acquaint ed with some of the less familiar kinds, or perhaps some improved varieties of old favorites. Consider the daylily. Many peo ple still grow the very old vari eties that are almost weeds in some places. Yet on the market there are hundreds of superior varieties of this one plant. With the right selection, it would be possible to have, tiieni in bloom from spring to fall and in, every color from light cream to near black. The same is true, of the iris. , ' ' Perhaps you have a shady spot that could use some color. Try the vivid red monarda or bee balm. Hummingbirds love these plants. They also come in many pastel colors if you prefer. The hosta or plaintain lilies are also good in shade' and have blue or white flowers and very decorative foliage. 4 Here in Oregon we see many primroses, and hcuchcra but very few phlox sublata, arabis, aubre tia and other spring beauties seen so frequently in eastern gardens. Poppies Bloom Early For early summer bloom why not try some of the newer Oriental poppies? Some of them arc much larger and they come in gorgeous shades of pink, red and white. Many per sons are willing to expend time and effort in search of the trail ing blackberries, preferring their delicate flavor and finer texture to the evergreen or Himalaya varieties, which are. more acces sible. Lilligren explained that the old er cut-over units which have been burned provide ideal places for the trailing vines which grow in abundance for several seasons un- til crowded out by brush and young ..... . trees. Berries generally are extra large this year and vines have numerous clusters of berries, with some of the choic est fruit nestled in the shade of rank new runners which will pro vide next year's crop. When is a gladiolus not a glad iolus? A. When it's a "glainellia." Our enterprising florists, not con tent with what nature and the hy bridizers can do, have invented a new flower. Made of gladiolus pet als and formed like a camellia, it is called, logically enough, a gla inellia. To make glamcllias, flor ists dismember several gladiolus flowers and then wire selected pet als together at the. base. The result is a lovely and distinctive blossom. Glamcllias, of course, have no natural stems, and they were or iginally intended for use in cor sages. The Society of American Florists points out that they also make ideal wedding flowers. The wide range of colors and the ready availability of gladioli make gla niellias the answer to a bride's flower problems at almost any sea son of the year. For Fall Weddings For autumn weddings, the So ciety suggests a white gladiolus ti ara for the bride, with a large flower in the center and buds at the end. Big white glamcllias, with sprays of smaller gladiolus flow ers, make up her bouquet. For the bridesmaids and maid of honor, glamcllias should be in appropriate autumn colors. Light red or yellow glamellias combine with sprays of matching pompon chrysanthemums to make a dis tinctive and charming bouquet. A single large glamellia of the same color is worn in the hair. And for a finishing touch, pompons edge elbow-length gloves. Many other combinations may be worked out, of course. Since Gla dioli come in every flower color but blue, and in a wide range of shades within each color, glamel lias can be fitted into any color scheme at any time of year. For autumn,- there are the deep yel lows, corals and light reds. For winter, consider the deep reds, which combine beautifully with hol ly and other evergreens. And for spring and summer, nothing could ne lovelier man ine ngni yeiiows, the various shades of pink, and the pinkish lavenders.
