Jerry Lynch Blasts Homer To Set Major League Mark For Pinch Hit Four Baggers CHICAGO (UPI) - Pittsburgh's Jerry Lynch had no instructions to hit a home run to win a game for the Pirates over the Chicago Cubs, but he did, and set a ma jor league record in the process oecause it was the 15th pinch homer of his career. "All Danny Murtaugh s a i d to me was 'Lynch, you're the hit ter'," Lynch said, describing the situation when he went to bat for pitcher Al McBean to open the Pirates', ninth. ; "He didn't say anything like 'Hit 'a home run,' or 'Get on base,' or anything else.'.' But Lynch specializes in pinch home runs,' and his drive went deep Into the right field bleach ers to give the Pirates a 7-6 win. It was his fourth pinch homer tips season two of them with Cincinnati before he was traded to Pittsburgh in late May, and now two of them with the Pirates. Breaks Old Mark The total of 15 moved him ahead of the old record holder, George Crowe, who amassed 14 with three National League teams, Boston-Milwaukee, Cincin- Leaders Lose In Northwest League Action . By United Press International An already tight Northwest League race was a bit tighter to day as the result of Wednesday night's games which saw the two front runners, Salem -and Yakima, lose. Paul Jaeckel gave up a run in the first inning, but then pitched shutout ball the rest of the way as Wenatchee downed Salem 8-1. Jaeckel picked up his 14th vic tory and received all the backing he needed from Moe Morhardt, who had four RBI's on a single and a homer. - Lewiston, trailing 4-1 going into the sixth, exploded for five runs in that inning and went on to down Yakima 6-4. The Yakima-Salem losses left the two clubs tied for first and enabled Lewiston to move to one and a half games from the top. In the other game played Wed nesday, night, Eugene defeated Tri-City 6-2. nati and St. Louis. The American League record is 12, by Bob Cerv with New York and Kansas City. "Of all of them," Lynch said, "this one felt the best. It was a high strike, a fast ball, and I hit it good. It was a good pitch.' Lynch, luckily, obtained the home run ball in the dressing room from the bleacher fan who caught it, a Lake Michigan life guard, Bobby Franklin. He re sponded to a public address sys' tern appeal, brought the ball to the Piratev dressing room, and re ceived an autographed ball in re turn. Lynch, 33. has played his en tire major league career with the Pirates and Cincinnati, serving mostly as a utility man, bench hand and pinch hitter de luxe un til his current tour with the Pi rates, where he broke into the major leagues, in 1954. He was traded to Cincinnati after the 1956 season. '' y "I wasn't worrying about the record," Lynch said. "I've been playing more with Pittsburgh, and that's what I want. I'd rath er play regularly and let some body else have the pinch-hitting records. "I only started five games at Cincinnati and I was a pinch hit ter eignt times." Since the trade, he's been more or less a starter with the Pirates. He's been in 83 games this sea son, 70 of them with Pittsburgh. Klamath Falls Is Defeated FARMINGTON, N.M. (UPI) Tulsa, Okla., powered its way into the semifinals of the Babe Ruth world series with a 9-2 conquest of Klamath Falls, Ore., Wednes day mgnt. ..- . Atlanta won the other semi finals berth with . a 5-3 decision over Porto Nuevo, Puerto Rico. Klamath Falls played Oakland. Calif., in the losers bracket today at 2:30 p.m. MST. In other games, Joplin. Mo., met Oaklawn. HI.; Porto Nuevo played Farming- ton, ana Frankfurt, Germany, met ureaencK, flia. Tulsa had two four-run innings en route to its win. Center-fielder Gary Marr's one-run double and third baseman Jerry Hill's three- run home run were the 'high' lights of a fourth-inning explosion. In the sixth inning, first base man Bob Banfield drove in two runs with a double and Don Jerni gan duplicated the feat later in the inning. Tulsa pitcher Eli Gourd had a no-hitter until he was tapped for three safeties in the sixth. Tim Badley opened that inning for Klamath Falls with a double and later scored on a single by Kick urosterhous. The other Klamath run came in the eventh inning on a single by Dave Lyman, a double by Greg Brosterhous and walks to Badley and pinchliitter Mick Keck. By DAVE ROWE UPI Sports Writer The Spokane Indians could vir tually wrap up the Pacific Coast League championship this week. The Indians are enroute to Hawaii where they meet the second-place Islanders in a four game series starting Friday. Spokane, which has led the cir cuit during most of the second half of the season, currently is 12 games in front as they move to Hawaii. Loop President Dewey Soriano announced that a flip of a coin will decide where the opening game of the playoff will be held. He said the coin-flipping would take place at Seattle bunday. Oklahoma City and Dallas-Ft.j Worth currently are battling for top spot in the Southern Division with San Diego snapping at their heels. In games Wednesday night Larry Foster of Seattle pitched a one-hitter to beat Portland 1-0; Salt Lake City downed Dallas-Ft. Worth 8-4; Denver took Oklahoma City 4-3 in the first game but the 8934s took the second tilt, 5-1; San Diego whipped Spokane 8-2, and Hawaii 3,225 fans watched the Islanders make it five . straight over Tacoma 5-1 and 11 consecu i tive victories. Jim Hughes doubled off Foster in the fifth Inning for the lone Beaver hit at Portland. A crowd of only 193 persons was on hand for the pitcher's battle. Foster struck out 12 and walked two. Foster and Stan Johnson were the batting stars with two hits each. Seattle's only run came in the fourth when Johnson' singled, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on Chico Fernandez' sm-gle. Denver, scoring all its runs in the last inning, took the first game of its twin bill with Oklahoma City 4-3. Chi Chi'Olivo chalked up his 11th -victory giving up seven hits. The . big seventh frame saw Cluco Salmon triple. Ethan Black aby and Phil Roof drew walks and Tom Borland replaced starter Jim Golden on the mound. Pinch hitter Bob Uccker took first on an interference call against the 89er catcher, Salmon being .waved across the plate. In the nightcap Russ Kemmer- er, for the last few years a relief artist, switched to starter ana Roseburg Indians Football Prafice Set I For First Session Next Monday Morning Roseburg's Midwestern Confer ence defending champion Indians, undefeated in their last two sea sons of conference play, will be gin the swing into the 1963 foot ball season with their first practice Monday. Gone from the 1962 champions who compiled an 8-2 season's rec ord will be AU-Americans quarter back Paul Brothers and lineman Doug John and three other start ers, end Spike Moore and flanker back Al Joelson and end Vern Ohman. Back for this season, however will be an impressive list of 23 let termen. Coach Roy Thompson lost only nine of last year's 32 letter winners by graduation. The pressure will be on the dc fending champions all the way this season, as each of their nine regularly-scheduled games is a Mid western Conference contest. Athletic director Al Hoffman said there are some reserved seat tickets left for the home games. Thoso tickets may be obtained at the high school athletic office until 5 o clock this afternoon or on Fri day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Coach Thompson said the first football practice will be held at 8:30 Monday morning. Equipment is being issued today, Friday and Saturday from 2 to 7:30 p.m. All players must receive a phys ical from their own family physici an before the first practice. The coaching staff recommends the players eat a light breakfast beE fore that first practice session. Thompson said he figures Spring field, North Bend, South Eugene and Marshfield will throw up the toughest competition in the Mid western Conference this season. , .
