Newspaper Page TextGemini Flight Would Jar Hippo's Teeth - CAPE CANAVERAL (UPI) The federal space agency is up set over the prospect that the up coming Gemini flights into space could make human milk-shakes out of America's astronauts. As matters stand today, the first - Geini pilots would go bouncing off into orbit at the rate of 660 bounces per minute. That's enouglf to jar the teeth of a hippopotamus. The' culprit in this particular potful of Gemini problems is the Titan-2 rocket that will boost the capsule and its two men. Tech nicians have discovered the rock et is a sort of flying accordion, vibrating up and down at the rate of 11 cycles per second. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) told United Press International that "NASA considers the pres ent level of oscillation as unsuit able for a manned vehicle." Intra-servlce memos on the subject are phrased considerably stronger. Translation: The astronauts would be shaken to the eyeballs. It is admittedly a bit difficult to see anything clearly while one's head is going up and down 660 times per minute (11 cycles per second times 60 seconds). "... The relative motion be tween the pilot's head and the in strument panel, which also would be vibrating, could make it dif ficult for pilots to read instru ments accurately," as NASA says. Reactions Unpleasant Another space agency official says tests in the 11-cycle-per-sec-ond area have turned up a long list of reactions by pilots, "most of them unpleasant." Scientists have concluded from their studies of Titan-2 military test shots at Cape Canaveral that the critical vibrations start a lit tle more than one minute after blast-off, and that they last for about 20 seconds or so. The problem and the responsi bility for its solution has been dumped back into the lap of the Air Force, which had the Titan-2 problems and all built to its specifications in the first place. The difficulty has been duly ac corded a name: "Pogo-stick effect." It has been more or less Din pointed:' ".. . Evidently originat ing as a pressure disturbance in propellant pumping and piping system which results in vari ations in engine thrust, which feeds back through the vehicle's structure, further amplifying the pressure disturbance ..." A two-point general course of action has been proposed: 1. Stop the vibrations; 2. Fix up things in the place where they started; i.e., the fuel pumps and lines. Never Worries The Air Force has been flying Titan-2 missiles for going on two years, but never worried about the "pogo-stick effect" because the nuclear warheads the rocket was designed to carry don't have eyeballs to shake or teeth to rat tle or stomachs to churn. NASA long ago selected Titan-2 as the Gemini capsule booster, and has had its scientific fingers in the rocket's innards for a year or more without notable re sults. The problem is still there, on every Titan-2 that flies from Cape Canaveral. . Asked whether the "pogo-stick" causc-effect-solution would delay Gemini's schedule, the space ag ency answered with a firm "no." There is a fair amount of rea son for (his indication of confi dence. Project Gemini already is more than a year behind sched ule, and it will be another 14 months October, 1964 be fore the first pair of astronauts will board the capsule for a flight into space. That leaves a goodly slice of time for finding some way to take the spring out of the fly ing pogo-stick. 8 The News-Review. Roseburg, Ore. The federal judges, at Monday's day-long hearing on the oath, or dered Pocatcllo attorney Louis Racine to file a trial brief within 30 days on behalf of the public employes ho represents. The judges gave Atty. Gen. Al lan G. Shcpard 15 days after re ceiving a copy of Racine's docu ment to file a brief supporting the law. A parade of Iduho professors Monday described the 1963 stat ute as a threat to academic freedom. "The mind should bo free to explore all arcus of knowledge," said Dr. Albert E. Taylor, head of the Idaho Slate University graduate division. "My concern is to leave the professors free of harrassmcnt, free of suspicion." He said many professors arc reluctant to come to a school that has a loyalty oath provision. He said this makes it especially dif ficult for a school as small as 1SU to attract qualified instruc tors and would harm the Puca tcllo school system's recruitment of professors. Scolt Is New Member Of Education Board SALEM (UPI) Harry W. Scott, Salem, has been named to the State Board of Education, the governor's office announced recently- He succeeds Mrs. J. B. Cald well, Oregon Cily, whose term expired Aug; 1. Scott, former Salem School Board chairman and owner of Scott's Cycle Shop, was appointed to a seven-year term which ends Aug. 1, 1970. The appointment is subject to Senate confirmation.
