At a recent board meeting a spe cial speaker was Dan Dunham, vo cational agricultural instructor, who gave a brief outline of the Future Farmers of America pro gram and how it could be worked into fair events to the benefit of both students and the fair associa tion. Dunham stated the FFA will study needed improvements at the fairgrounds prior to actual work by the group on erection of perman ent facilities, wiring, plumbing, painting, landscaping, manage ment and other aspects of fair operation. In connection with this. Dunham presented a five-year plan for improvement, enlargement and beautification of the grounds which was accepted by the board. The FFA plans to have some entries at Uie fair this year and will con duct a livestock judging contest for practice purposes. Board Chairman Roy Anderson announced that permanent stock pens have been built to house ani mais entered at tne lair this year with more additions planned in time for next year s event. Plans are shaping up, Anderson reported, with the hiring of Nick Clark's orchestra from Springfield to play for the Coronation Ball at 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, and for the "Open Air Dance set for Auk 24 at the fairgrounds. The North Douglas Fair traditionally crowns its queen a week prior to actual fair events. Kiddies amusement rides have been arranged and en tertainment booths will be set up by local clubs and organizations, Anderson said. The next regular meeting of the fair board will be held Aug. 14, and a work night has been set up at the grounds for the evening of Monday, Aug. 19, to clean up the grounds and set up tables for the display of entries. NW Lumber Strike Enters 3rd Month The lumber strike situation in the Roseburg area remained calm today as the industry-wide spot walkout headed into its third month throughout the Northwest. The only plant struck in the Roseburg area is the U.S. Ply wood Corp. plant, which some 300 International Woodworkers of America members struck at 12:01 a.m. June 5 two months ago Monday. IWA business representative Marvin Williams said the Local office here was distributing food vouchers for striking members Monday and Tuesday. Lumber and Sawmill Workers! Vacationers Return The Rev. and Mrs. Norman Nau gler and family have returned from a three-week trip to California. They visited in Vallcjo with his parents and in Fresno with Mrs. Naugler's parents. While at Fresno they participated in a family re union. Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Foster and sons of Azalea visited in Spring field last weekend with her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Can' and their house guests drove to Cres cent City the Sunday after the new Oregon Mountain tunnel was open ed. Bob Jones, former Glendale resi dent, came up from California on a recent weekend to visit his moth er, Mrs. Vera Kemp, and brought with him his wife and younger daughter, Pam. Navy Fireman Robert McDow ell had a 72-hour pass recently and s)ent the time visiting with his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Mc Dowell, and family. He is based on the USS Mann at San Francisco. Mrs. Juanita Clare and Nancy returned recently from a week's trip to Trinidad, Calif. Jerry Schaeffer has left for San Diego and boot training camp fol lowing his enlistment in the U.S. navy. Duane Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Miller, is taking classes at the University of North Dakota summer school. He has been teaching in Gold Beach for the past three years and will be come a member of the Jefferson Junior High School faculty in Eu gene this fall. Movie Showtime School Opening Is Set Sept. 3 At Canyonville Canyanville schools are still planning to open on Sept. 3 and no agreement has been made to delay the opening for the bean harvest, Supt. Norman York said today. A letter from the local Depart ment of Employment to Rose burg School District which was quoted in a news article indicated Canyonville schools had agreed to a postponement. York said that this is not the case at this time. He said the Can yonville board will probably con sider the request this week or at its meeting next Monday. If an expert is given this as a problem hand he reasons that West must hold the king of clubs, other wise he could make 12 tricks easily. It is also apparent that West does not hold the ace and king of spades because if he did he would have led them right out. He counts seven trump tricks, two diamonds and a club in tup cards for 10 tricks and can get to 11 by finessing for West's king of clubs. Some sort of squeeze and end play is indicated. South plays two rounds of trumps and the ace and king of diamonds. He ruffs a diamond, goes back to dummy with his last trump, ruffs the last diamond and leads out all his trumps at which point if the opponents have discarded to best ability the last cards are: South leads the three of clubs ' and finesses against the king. Then he plays dummy s jack ot spades. If East rises with the ace he drops his partner's king and has to give South two spade tricks.
