BABE RUTH CHAMPIONS for District 4 ore the South Douglas All-Stars, who claimed the title by downing the Central Douglas All-Stars 17-1 Sundoy night at Roseburg's Legion Field. The South Douglas stars play their first game in the state tournament at The Dalles at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. (Photo By Bob Leber) Don Hein Establishes New Track Record To Highlight Action At Saturday Races Don Hein set a new track record of 15.34 seconds to highlight action in Saturday night's hardtop races at Roseburg Speedway. Vern Dykslra captured the ja lopy trophy dash, Dan Pitt won the B trophy dash and Jim Stand ley captured the A trophy dash. In a special powder puff race, Cissie Smith came out as the win ner and the flagman came out as a nervous wreck. At the start of the race he waved the red flag POWDER PUFF race winner at Roseburg Soturday night was Cissie Smith. (Photo Lab Photo) Eugene Emeralds Win Four Straight From Lewiston 9 By United Press International The Eugene Emeralds may be down, but they're far from dead. The last three nights, they won four games from the Lewiston Broncs, who had been leading the league. Those four games are 40 per cent of the Emeralds' wins for the whole second half of Uie season. Sunday night, Eugene raked the Broncs twice, 8-0 and 31. Satur day, the last place Emeralds won 3-2, and Friday 5-2. The disastrous weekend dropped Lewiston from a 1 1-2 game lead to second place, 1-1-2 games behind Salem. In other games Sunday, Salem swept a doublcheador from Tri City, 4-2 and 7-3 and Yakima Bnd Wenatchec split a twinbill, the Bears winning the opener 5-1, Wenatchee the nightcap 4-2. Sat urday, Salem beat Tri-City 41 and Wenatchee took Yakima 9-2. Hein won, followed by Hal Welker and Jim Standley. In Uie A main, Pitt rolled his hardtop a half dozen times going into Uie second lap and totaled it out. "I just got on the outside and couldn't hold her." Pitt said after the race. Welker came in winner, Jim Standley second and Hein third. wiUi Johnny Barron fourth. Welker took the lead in the third lap and held it all the way. The first four cars lapped the remainder of the field twice during this 25-lap event. In the jalopies competition, Carl Witt won the first heat, which fea tured Dave Johnson going over the right field bank and out of the race. Larry Zuber won the second heat, featuring Eugene cart in the first four spots. Ken Wilson won tli jalopy main. Dykstra led the field all the way until the final turn of the last lap, when he had a blowout and didn't finish. This marked the second week in a row Dykstra had vic tory within his grasp, but ran into bad luck. Last week he was lead ing the field going into the final lap when his engine blew up. This gave the South Douglas stars a record of 67 runs scored in three tournament games. They won their opener 33-3 and their second game Ju-i. The South Douglas squad will play their first state tournament game at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at The Dalles. I South Douglas kept its eye on I the stale tournament by bouncing back with a five-run uprising in ; the second inning to take a com-1 manding lead. They added five more runs in the second inning and an additional five in the third to move out to a 151 lead. Their final two runs came in the top of the sixth inning. Gerald Davenport went all the way on the mound for South Doug las, isuing eight hits and walking three, while striking out seven.
