(UPI Telephoto) New Clinician Hired For Remedial Speech The remedial speech program for five Douglas County schools will be stepped up this fall with the addition of a new speech clinician hired to increase the scope of work carried on the past year by Curtis Weiss. Mrs. Sally Ross, coming here from Cottage Grove, will assist Weiss in the Elkton, Drain, Yon calla and Oakland school dis tricts. She has been hired on a contractual arrangement in which she shares work in the various districts, according to County School Supt. Kenneth Barneburg. Under terms of the arrangement, the state pays 50 per cent of the cost, with the districts paying the remainder. "This is a service the districts have asked us to give them, because none has enough cases to justify hiring of teach ers separately," Barneburg said. Sutherlin is also involved in the Airline Trims Rate For Clergy, U.S. Military In an effort to step up its pas senger loadings. West Coast Air lines has introduced several new programs for the system. It now offers half fare rales to military personnel and half fare to members of the clergy and has introduced a new ticket system. The new fare for members of the Army, Navy, Marines, A i r Force and Coast Guard and the clergy has been set up in all 60 cities served by the airline. R. T. Irvine, West Coast's Rose burg customer service manager, said servicemen must be in uni form when they purchase tickets and while traveling. They must also have proof of authorized pass, leave or furlough. For both serv ice men and clergy, the arrange ment will be on a standby basis. No reservations will be made. However, once the serviceman or clergyman is aboard, he cannot be removed. Clergymen can qualify by secur ing a "clergy identification card" obtained by filing an application available at WCA offices. i The other program just set into ! operation is one called "instant" j tickets. The purpose is to make it , easier and quicker for customers, j With these "instant" ticket books. J special trips to pick up tickets in i advance and reduction of time in i checking in for flights is possible. ; The tickets come in a portfolio similar to a bank checkbook. Pas sengers using them are invoiced once monthly after the tickets have been used. Another part of the new look in WCA's transportation picture is the planned inauguration of sched uled service on completion of Ta coma's new industrial airport on or about Oct. 15. The service to and from Tacoma depends on Civil Aeronautics Board approval. The service was recently recom mended by CAB Chief Kxamincr Francis W. Brown., Tacoma was one of the original cities authorized for service in West Coast Airlines first certifi cate issued in 1946 The stop was later knocked off the schedule due to lark of adequate airport. WCA says at least three round trips daily are to be scheduled. Tacoma to Portland prd south, and three round trips daily, with con nections through Seattle to Eastern Washington. It will be inaugurated w ith F2" turbine powered equip ment. A backlog of cases referred dur ing the past year prompted the hiring of the additional teacher, Barneburg said. Weiss has been named head of the department. Both Weiss and Mrs. Ross will be helping youngsters with speech problems and will work primar ily with elementary school chil dren, although high school stud ents may also avail themselves of the service. Referrals are made by the teachers and the health department but are not limited to these sources. Screening of the cases will be done by both members of the de partment and both will be doing me same Kind of remedial work Barneburg announced. Mrs. Ross holds a master's de gree from the University of Ore gon. Her husband is with the Douglas County Welfare Depart ment, iransicrring nere recently from Lane County. Weiss will be in charge of the speech program in the five dis tricts. Low Bids Listed For Two Projects At VA Hospital Enco Inc., Portland, was the suc cessful bidder at S24.937 for con struction of 700 feet of covered and enclosed walkway at the Veterans Hospital, it was announced Friday. In addition, Melvin Gregory of Roseburg, was the low bidder' at $4,700 for foundations for the walk way, as an additional project. The walkway covering will be of pre-fabricated steel panels with baked-on enamel. The structure will extend be tween Building No. 1 and the Rec reation Building and Building No. 2. to provide a covered and en closed area for patients when going to the recreation building or to the main building where many of them are fed. This has long been a need to keep the patients out of the rain and cold during bad weather, a hospital spokesman said. The need of such a facility was pointed up strongly during last winter's snow. The work will start immediate ly, according to plans. Caravan Of Coats Arrives At Store The biggest shipment of wom en's coats ever received by a J. C. Penney store in Roseburg arrived here this week. Called the Fall Coat Caravan, a total of 560 coats was trucked in as part of a cooperative merch andising project between the com pany and several manufacturers. The purpose of the project is to bring bis-city selection to the smaller towns. Penney Manager Stan Hyde said stores In a town like Roseburg cannot keep stocks as big as this, but with the "fall coat carfcvan" method, the big stocks can be put on the store floor for a limited time. The car avan then moves on to another town. The stock of coats is re plenished from town to town. The big stock will remain in Roseburg for another veek before being sent on to the next town. A 1 1 J Riddle Veneer Plans 2nd Shift A second shift of about 25 men is epxecled to be put on at the Riddle Veneer Co. in about two weeks. The company, the former Monroe Lumber Co., went into op eration this Week with one shift of the same number of men. The veneer plant was part of a purchase made as a joint venture by Roseburg Lumber Co. and U.S. Plywood for the purpose of obtain ing timber and for operating the veneer plant. A spokesman said there are no plans at present for operation of the sawmill which previously op erated under the title of Stomar Lumber Co. If economic condi tions' warrant, it could be put into operation, since the mill will be kept intact, he said. The veneer produced will be sold on the open market. Myrtle Creek Plywood, Inc., will continue to be a customer. Mamie, Belinsky To Ger Togerher TACOMA, Wash. (UPI) Actress Mamie Van Doren flew into town Friday for a reunion with Bo Belinsky, left-handed pitcher with the Hawaii Islanders of the Pa cific Coast League. "I sort of invited her up here to show her the minor leagues," said Belinsky. Belinsky, who reported to Ha waii after being sent down by the Los Angeles Angels of the Ameri can League, said he phoned Miss Van Doren in Los Angeles before Hawaii left for its trip to Tacoma. Belinsky was engaged to Miss Van Doren. but broke off the en gagement and for a time dated Mrs. Hicky Dupont, widow of Francis V. Dupont. Asked if his romance with Miss Van Doren was on again, Belin sky said: "Who knows what real ly can happen? She's a wonderful girl." Miss Van Doren arrived by plane from Los Angeles Friday afternoon. Belinsky at first balked against being sent to Hawaii and did not report to the Islanders for several weeks but said he is now happy with the club. "It's just like jumping in the ocean." he said. "It's cold at first but after awhile you learn to like it." Chaplain From Florence Serves Mercy Hospital Father Krnmit Buckley of Flor ence has been temporarily as signed as chaplain at Mercy Hos pital, it was announced today. Father Buckley will take over the duties until mid-September, when Father John Sheridan re' turns from a trip to Ireland. Father Dennis Gaston has been filling in temporarily since Fath er Sheridan left, but he left Tues day of this week for Tacoma, Wash. (UPI) There were an estimated 10,000 witnesses to the one that got away from 13-year-old fisherman Mike Douglas Friday night. After battling an 800-pound jew- fish for more than 35 hours, Mike lost the big fish about 11:35 p.m., EST, when the youth's fishing line snapped. Mike took his loss graciously. "I'll get him again someday," he said. The youth had hooked the fish around 3 p.m., EST Thursday with a homemade rig and bream for bait. 'I'm going to keep on fighting it until 1 land it or collapse," he said. "I rest when the jewfish rests, but I wonder who is going to give out first." The manager of the Patrick Air Force Base pier, where Mike latched onto the huge fish, said about 10.000 people had congregat ed around the pier to shout en couragement to the young angler. After the battle had been going on about four hours, several div ers, went down to see what the bov had caught. Mike's father, Lt. Col. William K. Douglas, brought his son food and soft drinks during the long struggle. Douglas, former doctor for the nation's first seven astronauts, said Mike had been relieved at the pole only long enough for "the necessities of life." Mike slept for about an hour Thursday night while the fish rest ed, and took several short naps Friday night. He made the fishing rig, a nine- foot pole with 63-pound test line, to catch sharks. Local News Miss Enid Sparks, a former low er marie teacher at Roseburg Jun ior Academy, has her fourth book of childrens' stories off the press. The book is entitled, "Along Spar kling Paths" and features as do her other tlirce cniiarcns uook, character - building stories from true life. Miss Sparks' 49 years of teaching, part of the time as an instructor of teachers, has help ed to qualify her for the writing of her stories. She served 10 years as a teacher here and 10 years in Eugene. In September she will be launching into her fourth year at Longview, Wash. Duchek climbed aboard the motorcycle Friday and per formed his act, 70 feet above the floor of the Las Vegas Conven tion Center. One of the acrobats suspended below on the ladder. Miss Lydia, was new to the team. She was replacing Duchke's wife Katie, who plunged to her death July 17 in Salem, Ore., when she struck a guy wire in the armory at the Oregon State Fairgrounds. Friday's performance was the first since her death. The funeral was held last Tuesday in Los An geles shortly before rehearsals began for the Las Vegas open ing. "The music was playing, the spotlight was shining on us and we began our ascent up an in clined wire towards the rafters of the armory," Duchek recalled. "Katie was balanced on a ladder on the motorcycle I was driving. Her nephew Ronnie was below her. She was in . top shape and in good spirits. "Siddcnly she struck a guy wire left from an earlier act and tumbled to the concrete floor be-, low. Coast Guardman Gets Rescue Honor Donald R, Levick, son of Mrs. Ed Malone of Winston, was pre sented the Sikorsky Winged - S Award at ceremonies held recent ly at the Coast Guard Air Detach ment, Los Angeles. Levick, 28, is an aviation mechanic 2C. in the Coast Guard. The Winged-S Award is present ed by the Sikorsky Corp. to heli copter pilots and crew members who have participated in a rescue in which a life was saved. Levick earned the award for the role he played in the rescue of two persons who had been tossed into the icy waters of San Francisco Bay after their boat had capsized. Levick's helicopter hovered over the people and hoisted them to safety. Levick has been assigned to the Los Angeles Air Detachment since August 1962. There will be no admission charge but a free will offering will be taken. "Shadow of the Boomerang," the most recent of the Billy Graham dramatic films, is an action west ern filmed in the wide open spaces of Australia's "outback" country, lt was produced against the back drop of one of the evangelists ma jor crusades. The current release stars the American performer Georgia Lee, attractive and gifted young actress-singer who is remembered for her starring role in "The Heart Is A Rebel," filmed during the Billy Graham New York Crusade at Madison Square Garden. The co-star, Dick Jones, whose acting abilities are enhanced by his outstanding skill in the saddle, will be recognized as television's Buffalo Bill Jr. in a popular west ern serial.
