Connie suffered no pain.
The enemy ground fire that
downed his plane June 27 appar
ently killed him and his Vietna
mese pilot instantly.
There's probably bitterness
mixed with your grief because a !

two boys like Condon Hunter Ter
ry HI and Dennis Wade should
die at a place like Can Tho,
thousands of miles away from
DaUas.
The tropic skies above the hot,

Network Invites
Rock-Barry Debate
NEW YORK (UPI) - Gov. Nel
son A. Rockefeller and Sen. Bar
ry Goldwater, R-Ariz., have been
invited by the Columbia Broad
casting System (CBS) to exchange
their views in a television debate.
Richard S. Salant, president of
CBS News, sent telegrams to the
two Republicans Tuesday, offer
ing them an hour of air' time on
July 24, Aug. 7 or Aug. 21.
A spokesman said today the
network has not received reolies
from either Rockefeller or Gold-
water.
- In extending the invitation, Sa
lant suggested the debate center
on "appropriate policies and direc
tions for the Republican party in
1964."
Simmering dissension within the
GOP burst to the surface last
Sunday when Rockefeller warned
that the "radical right lunatic
branch" might all but destroy the
party.
He also expressed the fear that
Goldwater, a leading candidate
for the 1964 presidential nomina
tion, will beeon.e a "captive"
candidate of the extreme right
wing factions.
The Arizona conservative's sup
porters promptly retorted that
the attack was Rockefeller's wav
of declaring his own candidacy

now and for young Connie and
Dennis later in the kind of man
Connie was and the way he died.
Some of your well meaning
friends have probably told you it
was a shame Connie had to come
y ay over here and fight and die
in this nasty mess without even
having the satisfaction he was
fighting an officially recognized
war.
Mavbe it was a shame. Audrev.
but lots of women know it wasn't
any easier having their men killed
in the 'official" war of the for
ties or the "police action" of the
fifties. The blow is just as stupi
fying; the grief just as terrible.
And Connie died fighting a war,
Audrey, a war just as important
as Korea, the ETO, or the Pacific.
Maybe it is a shadow war. mav
be the homburged diplomats have
their reasons for insisting that
Connie was here merely as an
"adviser." That's unimportant.
The important thing was Connie
Knew wny he was here, what he
was doing and why he was doing
it it was his duty and his job
and he did it well.
If you're confused, Audrey,
about Connie's being here, think
of Le Hoai Son's family. He was
Connie's pilot and died with him
when their T28 crashed during
Thursday's strafing run.
He was killed by one of his own
countrymen mayDe even a rela
tive in this fighting which has
been going on in Viet Nam for
more than 15 years. Wars are
like that, Audrey. Remember we
had one of our own in the 1860's.
The thing to remember in your
hours of grief, Audrey, is what
his fellow pilots in the First Air
Commando Group thought of Con
nie. They all came to the little
green chapel in Saigon for the
memorial service, white and col
ored, lieutenants, colonels, corpo
rals and PFCs some in sun tan
khakies and some in slacks. And
even though Connie had been over
there only a month, they enjoyed
him as a friend, respected him
as a pilot and admired him as a
man.
Tractor Mishap
Claims Brothers
KLAMATH FALLS (UPI) Two
teen-age brothers drowned when a
tractor on which they were rid
ing overturned into an irrigation
canal 12 miles southest of here
Tuesday.
The victims were Terry High.
14, and Martin High, 12, sons of
Mr. and Mrs. Taylor High. High
is a well-known Klamath County
rancher.
The boys were riding the trac
tor along a road on the canal
bank, which parallels the water,
when the vehicle slipped and
plunged into eight feet of water.

He started all right by winning
the heart opening and leading out
his ace of trumps, but he contin
ued with the jack of trumps. West
took his queen and later on South
had to lose two more trump tricks
and a club.
South should have followed his
ace of spades with a low one. West
would still take his queen, but
South could play his jack of spades
later on and eventually pick up
East's nine spot with the ten.
Why was South's unfortunate re
sult due to bad play and not to
luck?
Because South had nothing to
gain bv leading the jack of spades
after taking his ace. Should trumps
break 3-3, he was only going to
lose two spade tricks on any play.
Should either defender hold four to
the king-queen South would have
to lose three trump tricks, but if
either opponent held queen-sman
or king-small then the low play
would save that all-important con

Conflict With Nasser
The reasons for the clash are
complex. Both support Arab na
tionalism and Arab unity but
they differ diametrically on who
should lead this part of the world.
Factor In Uprising
No such figure as Harari yet
exists in Iraq. But there the an

the army appears to have been
a major factor in the recent brief
uprising at the strategic El Rash
id military camp outside Bagdad,

On Charge Of Assault
Dist. Atty. George Van Hoomis
sen said a murder charge was not
considered becauso there was no
evidence that Oye died as a result
of the assault. An autopsy showed
he suffered a heart attack. He
was found dead several days after
the assault allegedly occurred.

leased and armed by dissident
army units in preparation for a
march on Baghdad.
Something like two-thirds of the

In both Syria and Iraq there Is
also discontent among the busi

ties have been virtually stalled as
a result of future uncertainties
