The youth, Tim Kash, who was just graduated from Douglas High School, earned the chance with his horse Zonga last weekend. In the Washington All-Arabian Show at Yakima, they claimed three firsts and a second in the four classes they were allowed to enter. They took second in the threc gaited marc and gelding class; firsts in the combination class, for mal driving class and the three gaited championship stake class. It was the victory in the last class which qualified the two for the national championship compe tition in Houston, Tex., in October. The trip to the nationals depends on whether or not officials at the Arizona State College in Tempe will allow him the time to attend the championship show. He will just be starting his freshman year at college when the show comes along. The victory at Washington was the culmination of a career in horsemanship which has already made young Tim a veteran in horse show competition. He has 51 tro phies to his credit, as well as un counted ribbons which line all wails of a room in the Kash home. Among the wins for Tim and his 6-ycar-old purebred Arabian geld ing bay are the Arabian three gaitcd S500 stake class at the Pa cific International Livestock Expo sition in Portland two years run ning; threc-gaited class and infor mal driving class at the Emerald Empire Horse Show; All-Arabian Horse and Pacific Coast Champion ship Classic at the Cow Palace in San Francisco in the three gaitcd mare and gelding class. The thrill of competition will keep the youth and the l.orse busy cv erv weekend until school starts, as well. This weekend they go to the Port land Meadows Horse Show, follow ed by the Highland Hunt Club Show in Portland, the Glendale Acres Hunt Club Show in Salem, the Arabian Horse Show at the Stale Fair and the Pacific Coast Cham pionship Classic again at San Fran cisco. The rise to the giddy heights of top - flight riding competition started for voting Tim when he was 12. It was then he began taking riding lessons from A. C. Sherlock of Winston. His horse, Zonga, came on the scene three years ago when it was broken and given its origin al training. For the last two years, h'.hc training job has been all Tim's. Roseburg is fresh from a fifth place finish in District II compe tition of the Emerald Empire Swim Conference. The local crew rack ed up 148 points to follow four teams that have a year-round prac tice schedule. Winning the district title was the powerful Reedsport Aquatic Braves with 3964 points. Mcdford finished second with 262, the North Bend Aquatic Club was third with 222 and Grants Pass ended fourth with 2131? points. Trailing fifth place Roseburg was Lakeview with 51 points and Klamath Falls with 25 points. In the District I meet the Wil lamalane swimmers finished sec ond to the red-hot Eugene Y team. Eugene racked up 660 Mi points, while Willamalane had 249. Roseburg's only first place awards in the district meet were won by Laurie Hicks in the girls 910 diving competition, Jim Weav er in the boys 0-10 diving, and Ron Frashour in the boys 13-14 100 yard backstroke event. Frashour was timed at 1:13.6 for his vic tory, while Miss Hicks racked up 28.6 points. Second places for Roseburg went to Jeanne Forrest in the girls 13-14 diving with 71 points, Ron Frash our in the boys 13-14 100-yard free style race with a time of :59.7, Chris Longfellow in the boys 1314 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:17.2, the 13-14 100 individual medley with a clocking of 1:16.6 ana both Frashour and Longfellow clocking of 1:11.4.
