Tonight the local crew will be out to regain some of the prestige it lost to Central Point when it takes on another Southern Oregon power house in the form of Medford. The twin-bill against Medford is sched uled to start at Legion Field at 6:30 p.m. Sunday Roseburg will return to Doug-Lane League play with a 1 p.m. twin-bill against Bethel Mer chants (Willamette) at Willamette High. Going into the weekend schedule, Lockwood .Motors has built up a respectable 19-6 record for the sea son and is leading the Doug-Lane circuit with a 6-0 mark. In league play the local power opened with a pair of wins over Willamette by scores of 6-2 and 7-0. Medford is currently battling for the top spot in the Southern Di vision of area IV play, trailing only the league-leading Klamath Falls Falcons. The Southern Ore gon power boasts most of its high school team that reached the state semifinals before falling to rugged Pendleton. Coach Bill Harper will probably save ace pitchers Ran Cool and Dick Williams for action in Sun day's league encounters. Cool heads the pitching staff with a 7-0 rec ord and has racked up 106 strike outs in 50 innings. Williams packs a 5-2 record after being charged with the loss in Thursday's game against Lindsay Bros. Steel (Jef ferson) of Portland. ' For tonight's ' doublebill, Rose burg will have four pitchers ready for action. The foursome includes Ron Westbrooks- (3-2), Jerry Bou-. cock (2-1), Rojalio Gutierrez (1-0) and Jon Burnham (1-0). Bruce Wassom, moved into the darting outfield following a rash of injuries, has moved up to lead the batting parade with a .333 aver age with eight hits in 24 at bats. Williams packs the best average with six hits in 13 at bats for a .462. Catcher Jim Beamer is tops among the regular starters with 23 hits for 74 at bats for a .311 average and is the current RBI king with 18. The probable starting infield for Roseburg will find Dave Scvall at first, Artie McDonald at second, Bob Manning at short and Bou rock or Mike Markham at third. If Manning is moved back to his regular centerfield slot McDonald will change to shortstop and Mark ham will start at second. Reserve infielder is Rick Abrahamson. In the outfield Lockwood Motors will have Mike Blomberg in left, Manning or Tom Morrison in cen ter and either Morrison or Was som in right. VanOsten Wins Hardtop Opener; Cars Set To Roll Again Tonight Hardtop drivers from through out Southern Oregon will be on hand tonight to battle the local aces on the quarter-mile asphalt track at the Roseburg Speedway. Time trials will begin at 7:30 p.m., with racing action to start at 8. Action at the Speedway opened with special races July 4 after rain had forced cancellation of two earlier scheduled dates. Bud VanOsten nipped Jay Eaton In the A-Main event, while Jim Slandley ran off with top honors in the A trophy dash. Standley also captured a first in the fast heat. VanOsten, Eaton and Stand ley are all Roseburg drivers. AI Root of Medford won the first heat race. In the jalopy heat races Art He! veson of Roseburg and Ivan Booth took first place awards. The tightest competition during . the afternoon came in the Group j II single engines where Clarence ' Silvers and Bill Bearden, a pair of local drivers divided top honors. The two scored the same number of points to tie for first. Other Roseburg first place win ners were Bob Berry in Group I single engines and Glen Thomas in Group I dual engines. Floyd Cautrell of Springfield walked off with the honors in Group II of the single engines and Grants Pass' Jerry Condray won the jun ior boys event. Bearden, 53, is the oldest driver ever to compete in the Slo-Kart Club sponsored races. Taking his kart out of mothballs for the holi day action, Bearden showed the younger drivers a few tricks. The next kart races at the Tri City tract will be July 14. A meet ing of the Slo-Kart Club will be held July 10 at the home of Dick Miner, club president. RESULTS: Dual Engines Group 11, Glen Thomas. Cow Creek Team Wins The Cow Creek District bowling team, made up of Forest Service employees,' bested the team from the North Umpnua District recent ly in a playoff at the Indian Lanes in Roseburg, taking three of four points and allowing their opponents only one game. Jerry Wojack, spokesman for the Tillerites, said the team is seeking matches with other Forest Service teams to de termine the championship, reports correspondent Mrs. Milton Hain mcrsly. Voss of Roseburg, with Eugene's Don Hooper finishing second. Several lost wheels and one smash-up marked the opening ac tion. Rocky Plant, Roseburg, had his throttle stick in the first hard top heat race and flipped over smashing his car. JOAN NORDLING placed first in the Novice Ladies Figure Skating division at the recent Pacific Northwest Regional Skating Championships held in Tacoma. The victory came on the heels of an Oregon title won by Miss Nordling and qualifies her to compete in the U.S. National Skating Championships to be held later this summer in Portland's Memorial Coliseum. Other skaters from the Rolletta Dance and Figure Club competing in the regional meet were Cathy Meats, Dick Spielman, Kathy Squires, Debra Reece and Gary Munn. Ortega Picked Over Bello 2-1 NEW YORK (UPI) Welter weight contender Caspar Ortega of Mexico is favored at 2 1 to beat young Billy Bello of New York tonight and spoil Billy's tel evision and Madison Square Gar den main-event debut. Their scheduled 10-rounder will mark Bello's first attempted step toward a shot at the 147-pound crown. Thus far brown-haired Billy, 20, has been brought along gradually by his handlers, who had ar-1 ranged special instructions this ( year from former welterweight i and middleweight champion Su- gar Ray Robinwn. Left-hooker Bello's 23 fights in Vi years show 17 victories, five defeats and one draw. He scored eight knockouts but never was j stopped himself. Those 23 bouts provided only one fifth the professional exper ience enjoyed by Indian Ortega, only 27 but a eteran of 11 ring years. Cronwell Cops Tennis Title PORTLAND (UPI I - Jerry Cromwell, a 19 year-old power hit ter from the University of South ern California, blasted his way into the finals of the Oregon Ten nis Championships Friday with a 6-1, 11-9 win over No. 2-soedcd Doug Sykes of Berkeley, Calif. Cromwell, seeded third in the tournament, will meet the winner of trxlav's semifinal between llorst Ritter. Palo Alto, Calif., and Jack Nccr, Portland, for the title Sunday. The women's singles field was cut to the top four seeded entries in matches Friday. The semifinals today matched Barbara Chandler, Boise, against Doris Popple, Lake Oswego, and Margo Hedges, Og den Utah, against Diana Gai, San Francisco. MORE SPORTS ON PAGE 3 Podres To 1-0 By MILTON RICHMAN UPI Sports Writer Lefty Johnny Podres showed three All-Star pitchers how it should be done, although he does not plan to be in Cleveland on Tuesday. The reason ha won't be there is simple. He wasn't chosen to! the National League All-Star team by manager Alvin Dark. But he certainly looked as if he should have been Friday night when he beat one All-Star pitch er and earned a richly deserved "well done" from two others in leading the Los Angeles Dodgers to a two-hit 1-0 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Podres bested left-hander Jim O'Toole, one of eight pitchers chosen for the NL All-Star team by Dark. And ho also bettered the two most recent performances of his All-Star teammates, Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale. Koufax blanked the Cardinals on three hits last Wednesday night and Drysdale also whitewashed St. Louis on five hits Tuesday night but Podres was sharper than both in pitching the Dodgers to their fifth straight victory while in creasing their league lead to three games.
