The new three-member coordi nating staff is moving into a 50- by-90 foot office in the basement of the Capitol Building. Teletypes, radio transmitters and telephone lines will be moved, into a nearby communications center in a few days. The agency, which included IS staffers before the legislative cut back, is moving out of small of fices in the finance building. The new offices and communi- caaions renter cost $36,000. The work was ordered before the leg islature slashed the agency's funds and cut it to a three-member coordinating staff attached to the governor's office. Federal Help Out As a result of the legislative cut back, federal authorities refused to authorize matching funds to bolster the state agency. Oregon is the first state to turn its back on civil defense. The city of Portland dropped its CD organization. The Multnomah, Klamath, Lincoln, Deschutes, Lane and Coos County organiza tions either have been dropped or have been drastically cut back. It was believed a major reason for the loss of federal funda was the fear that if matching moneys wero provided in spite of the cut back, other states would follow Oregon's example and dump the entire program back in the laps of I he federal government. Oregons three - member staff isn't expected to be too lonesome in its giant, 4,500 square-foot of fice. There were indications that at least one other state agency ' would be moved into the same office space. Only seven of Oregon's 18-mem-ber staff remained on the job this week. The others were laid off, or got discouraged and quit. When Sandstrom opened his of fice this morning, the first day of the 1963-65 biennium, his staff will include radio technician Joseph Vogt and bookkeeper Don- I na Casey.
