Pnlli BY WAYNI MOSHER D.ufl.t County ExUfliion Agtnt The first shipment of wool, and incidentally, the lion'i share of the wool has been shipped by now, and we will ship the second pool on Tuesday, July 18. You should be receiving a letter in the very near future giving you the date and where to deliver your wool. We will be shipping from the Southern Pacific freight depot here in Roseburg and will start receiv ing wool about 7:30 in the morn ing. We will have a little over a car to ship on this last shipment, and this should wind up our woo) pool for this year. Tolerance Requested .Many of you were disappointed that you were unable to get in on the first pool shipment. However, if you will stop and think about the way that the pool must operate, perhaps you will be a little more tolerant of what we are trying to do. When we sold the wool pool, we wrote a letter to all of you folks telling you that we needed to know when your wool was shorn. If you did not answer our letter and tell us when your wool was shorn, later on you receives a letter telling you that you would npt be in the first pool and would have to wail for the second pool. The reason for this Is that we try to get up a shipment of wool, and as soon as we have enough to make a good shipment, we gel a hold of Ihe buyer and try to arrange for a shipping date. Once the shipping date is established, we must set an amount of wool that we will re ceive at that time. When we re ceive this amount of wool, we (hut it off. This comes in the order in which you call In and let m know that your wool is shorn. In this case, where we figured we'd have about 5 carloads of wool, it made it necessary to ship about carloads the first time and save at least 50.000 to 60.000 pounds for the second shipment. Charge Break Cited The break on Ihe shipping charg es is about 40,000 pounds on a car and 10,000 pounds on a trailer. This means that if you have 40,000 pounds of wool on a car, you could ship a trailer with a minimum of 10,000 pounds of wool in the trailer for a given rate. If you have less than this, the rale goes up. For this reason, we have 50.000 to 60, 000 pounds of wool left to give us a little leeway. If we guess wrong on the weight, we still should have enough wool to meet the minimum requirements. We realize that working through pools docs put some restrictions on the individual time of shipping and this type of thing. But, we hope that the extra price that we are getting out of Ihe wool and out of the lambs by our pooling is paying well for the inconvenience that it causes. Alany of us were somewhat dis satisfied because of the length of time we have had to wait to gel off the first shipment. However, per haps there are some extenuating circumstances. The pcoplo that buy the wool have some schedules they must meet as wcH as we, and, consequently, we aren't always able to ship it just when we would like. Payment Announced Wool growers In the county will be interested to know that the in centive payment for l!H!2 on wool has been announced recently. Fleece wool will get an incentive payment of 30 per cent; unshorn lamb at 57 cents per 100 pounds of live weight; and mohair 3.6 per cent of the net selling price. This would mean that those grow ers In the pool last year would get 16.43 cents per pound mora for their wool coming from the incen tive payment. The extra S cents that Ihe pool brought over the regular 50 cent price in Ihe area would amount to 1.6 cents a pound more incentive payment than what you would normally have gotten. or making you a total gross on the sale of about 6.4 cents over the normal going price in Ihe area. That means that you will gross for your wool during the year, 71 cents on the average, and I think ' that you can see that you are do ing a lot better than most people ! in the United Slates. The incentive is much lower this year than it was a year ago, i which indicates Hint wool sold quile ' a bit higher this lasl year than il did the year before. This means ! that the average price in the Unit-: cd Stales last year should have been around 47.5 rents a pound, grease basis.
