Canton, Miss.: A white service station operator. Ben P. Lewis. 43, was arrested and charged Wednesday with the shotgun wounding of five Negroes as they walked along a street Monday night. Chapel Hill, N.C.: Around 100 Negro and white demonstrators protested segregation at a drug store Wednesday and police ar rested a white demonstrator on charges of striking a youth with a picket sign. Danville, Va.: Negroes decided at a meeting Wednesday night to observe a racial truce until a fed eral judge rules on the legality of a state court injunction against demonstrations. Gadsden, Ala;: Circuit Judge A. B. Dunningham turned down a habeas corpus petition and ruled Wednesday that more -than 200 Negro demonstrators must stay in jail until their individual trials, beginning Friday, are held. Eight Negro teen-agers were ar rested Wednesday for ignoring police orders to disperse. Police said they blocked a sidewalk in front of a downtown store. Council Group Calls Bids For Park Road Improvement A Roseburg City Council com mittee decided Wednesday to go ahead with a bid call for road im provements at Stewart Park. The bids will be opened at the next regular council meeting on July 8. Final determination of which roads are to be improved and to what extent will be made at that time by either accepting the bid in whole or in part, the committee decided. Special Meet Held During Monday's regular meet ing the council called for the ad journed session Wednesday to con tinue consideration of the road mat ter after it became apparent that council members were still unde cided on the nature and extent of improvements needed. Council members asked for further studies on this intersection to determine a means of control. Mayor Tom Garrison has suggested reducing the curve at that point so as to alleviate the hazard to youngsters playing in the area. A few hours later. Rep. Paul Rogers, D-Fla.,' heard from "trustworthy sources" that 3,000 heavily armed guerrillas had landed. At that point, the press chief of the Cuban (refugee) Revolu tionary council stepped in witn an announcement that the invad ers would report progress by ra dio the following day. Second Fire Hits UQR0TC Building EUGENE (UPI) Investigators today sought the cause of the sec ond blaze in two months at the ROTC building on the University of Oregon campus. A fire at the same building on April 25 was said to be of incendi ary origin. Another fire broke out in the building late Wednesday night, and flames shot high into the air. The alarm was turned in about 11:35 p.m. and firemen battled the blaze for about 1 1-2 hours. There was no immediate dam age estimate. Damage from the April 25 blaze was placed at $145,000. The building is headquarters for reserve Army officer training on the campus. YMCA Schedules Sale Of Lost-Found Articles The Roseburg YMCA issued a reminder today that an auction will be conducted at 1 p.m. on July 1 to dispose of ail lost and found items that have accumulat ed at the "Y" over the past 2't years. A variety of items collected over this period will be auctioned. In cluded are winter coats, sweaters, shoes, swim suits and fins, jewelry and watches. YMCA officials said they na turally would like to return the items to rightful owners, but if they are not claimed they will go into the auction. Proceeds will go to the YMCA World Service program. Thur., June 27, 1963 The Newt-Review, Roseburg, Ore. 3 Case Of Jiffers Racks Civil Defense Agency By ZAN STARK SALEM (UPI)-A case of jitters racked Oregon's civil defense agency today as the deadline near- ed for a decision on whether fed eral matching funds would be provided. Only seven of the agency's 18 niember staff were still on the job. The others have either quit or have been laid off because of the cutback ordered by the 1963 legislature. The legislature cut the agency to three-member coordinating staff attached to the governor's office. Federal officials said they would not provide matching funds so three additional staffers could be hired. Then they indicated they might change their mind. Su day marks the end of the current biennium. The new co ordinating council takes over on Monday. Nunn-Plrtman MMt Warne Nunn, executive assist ant to Gov. Mark Hatfield, met with national civil defense direc tor S. L. Pittman last Friday in Portland. Nunn said no decisions were reached. ' Nunn said he expected the final decision earlier this week. Agency Director Robert Sand- strom said he planned to keep himself, radio technician Joseph Vogt, and Bookkeeper Donna Casey on the staff. He said if federal funds were approved, he also would keep radiological defense and shelter officer W. F. Coleman, informa tion director Gerald Claussen, and property records clerk Fay Millie. The future of 3T field hospitals, the marking of fallout shelters, and stocking shelters with emer gency supplies is in doubt. Fed . eral matching funds could keep these programs alive, he said. Without the funds, he wasnt sure what would happen to these services.
