White City Firm Awarded Two Umpqua Forest Tracts The U. S. Forest Service Tues day sold three tracts of Umpqua National Forest timber for Slfio,507. Accused Shyer Flees Hospital SALEM (UPI) Arthur Ferrie. 60, an accused slayer, walked away from the grounds of the Oregon State Hospital here Tues day. Hospital authorities said Ferrie, who was committed in 1943, was not believed dangerous. Ferrie was charged in February of 1943 with the fatal shooting of Albert Iowa Berg, 54, at the Coos County town of Charleston. He was indicted for first degree mur der. Hospital authorities said Ferrie was on parole from the hospital at the time of the shooting. He was recommitted. Hospital officials several months ago recommended Ferrie's trans fer to an open ward and assign ment to a job on the grounds. Records show that Berg was marched from his house at gun point and shot twice in the head with a .22 caliber rifle. Ferrie also was charged with attacking and wounding another man the follow ing day. Berg's body was recov ered from South Inlet of Coos Bay. Health Office Sets Keasey-Calkins Sanitation Probe The Douglas County Health De partment has sent letters to the residents of the Keasey-Calkins road area reporting it will soon launch a study to determine the extent of sanitation problems in the area. The letter was sent by Dr. B. i R. Shoemakets retiring county ! health officer. He said the area Involved is roughly bounded by Kcasey Road on the east, Beaumont Street on the north, Kline Street on the west and Calkins Road on the north and west and the South Umpqua River on the south. He said the study is being spur red by complaints received by the Health Department the past two or three years. "The situation has doveloped," he said, "from poor soil conditions and high ground water in the area." He continued that "it is well known that much septic tank ef fluent Is flowing into roadside ditches, Into Newton Creek and low areas. In addition, there arc several small 'community type' sewer lines, each carrying sewage from several homes into ditches, etc." Dr. Shoemaker said the survey would be conducted, beginning next month, by a sanitarian who will visit each home. He said a ques tionnaire would be completed, the septic tank system inspected and the findings tabulated. As a sequel to the survey, each family will be informed of the status of its system and what can be done about it if there are de ficiencies. Dr. Shoemaker said the ques tionnaire would remain confiden tial. Any part of the area being con sidered for annexation to the city of Roseburg, such as the Garden Homes tract, will be excluded from the survey, Shoemaker concluded. The first sale, the Straddle Sale on the Cow Creek District, was on an 88-acre tract located 10 miles east of Tiller. The tract contained 3.600,000 board feet of Douglas fir and pine appraised at $15 20 per thousand board feet and 100.000 feet of incense cedar and other species appraised at $5.35 per thousand. Hinh bidder was Oregon Veneer Co. of White Citv, with a bid of $19 on the Douglas fir and pine and the appraised $5.35 on the oth er species. Total bid was $78,052. Other bidder on this sale was Paul B. Hult Lumber Company of Dil lard. The other two sales were on the South Umpqua District. The first, the Vena Ridge Sale, was on a 55-acre tract located 19 miles north east of Tiller The tract contains 2.30O.O0O feet of Dous;las fir and pine appraised at $21 and 200,000 teel ol wnite tir and other species appraised at $9.05. National Plywood. Inc. of Rose burg was high bidder with a bid of $21.10 on the Douglas fir and pine ana tne appraised price on the oth er species for a total bid of S52.098. Total appraised price was $51,868. Other bidder was Oregon Veneer company. The final sale was the Straight Creek Sale, involving a 276-acre tract located 16 miles northeast of Tiller. The tract contains 1,500,000 leet or Douglas fir appraised at $17.25 and 800,000 feet of white fir and other species appraised at 8. 35. Total appraised price was $35, 282. High bidder was Oregon Veneer Co. with a bid of $17.30 on the Douglas fir and the appraised price on the other species for a total bid of $35,357. Khrushchev, with marshals, ad mirals and air leaders ranked be side him, spoke at graduation ceremonies for new graduates of military academies. The Soviet leader, who plans to match President's Kennedy visit to West Berlin with his' own show-the-flag trip to Communist East Berlin this Friday, said that "res olute actions" were needed to block the way "to another world war." At the moment that President Kennedy was being cheered by a million West Herliners and re viewing the crack American gar rison in West Berlin, Khrushchev was telling his military: "It is impossible not to see that aggressive forces in the Western powers headed by the imperialist circles of the United States are continuing their war prepara tions." "All this cannot but put us on the alert," he said. Tuesday night, the mystery of Khrushchev's whereabouts had been deepened by reports from reliable sources that he had left Moscow for an undisclosed desti nation. Such rumors often originate with one person but promptly be come the common domain of for eign reporters and diplomats. Sometimes they turn out to bo founded on fact but more often they are not.
