Forest Closure Don Brand Named Principal Rules In Effect I Of Private School In Tokyo Next Monday Effective date of humidity re quirements in forests of this area is 12:01 a.m. June 24, according to John B. Richards, district fire war den, Douglas Koreat Protective As sociation. Very serious fire hazard now ex ists because of weather conditions and the existence of excessive amounts of inflamable dehris mak ing forest operations in Coos and Douglas counties, Zones 12. 13A, 13B, u, n and 19 extremely sus ceptible to fire. Regulations Listed All operations of power driven iMehinery and equipment used in sawniilling, logging or other oper ations on or within one eighth of a mile of forest land shall comply with the following regulations: 1. Humidity: The operator shall close down the operation during any day or part thereof for the period of time that the relative humidity is 30 per cent or lower in the operation area unless writ ten permission to continue such operation is given to the operator by the forester. 2. High Wind: The operator shall close down the operation during any day or part thereof for tile period of time that high wind pre vails over the operation area and the relative humidity is 35 per cent or lower in the operation area un less written permission to contin ue such operation is given to the operator by the forester; high wind shall be considered as any continuous wind or air disturbance causing an increase in fire danger in the operation area. 3. Watchman service will be re quired three hours after operation shuts down or 8 p.m. which ever is later, unless otherwise notified by the forester. DFPA Protects Zone 14, central Douglas County, and 17, the southern part, are pro tected by the Douglas Forest Pro tective Association. Zone 19, east ern Douglas, is in the Umpqua Na tional Forest area. Zones 12, 13A and 13B are in the Coos area and the western part of Douglas County-Zone 10, in eastern Lane and a part of Douglas, and Zone 11, in western Lane and a part of north western Douglas, went into effect on June 1 The opcnB&r can check the zone he is operating in on his operating permit. Stephens OR 3-8166 It has been announced that Don ald Brand, principal of the iiuslaw High School in Florence, Ore., has signed a two year contract to be come principal of the American High School in Tokyo, Japan. The Tokyo School is a community-sponsored educational institu tion with students from 28 coun tries enrolled. It is a private school established in 1902 by American business and professional people. This September the school is be ing moved into a new SS million building designed by the educa tion department of Stanford Uni versity. Brand's home has been in Rose burg, where he attended school. He began his teaching at Maple- Evening Recreation Program Is Due in Glendale Area The Glendale School Board spent the early part of its last meeting looking over the school teacher age next door to the high school. The building, formerly occupied by the Wayne Close family, will be the home of Victor llehn, the new music teacher, and his family. The board voted to have the build ing wired for heavy appliances. It was announced that William Baxter, the new athletic instructor, is planning for an evening commu nity recreation program to begin at the high school field on Satur day evening. June 22. Baxter is not being reimbursed by the school sys tem for this service but is offering it on his own time as a service to the community, correspondent Mrs. Gerald Fox reports. Supt. Jack Johnson reported that the new teachers being hired by the Board, had signed and returned their contracts. The following per sons are now members of the fa culty: Victor Hehn, formerly of Wyo ming has been hired to teach mu sic in both elementary and high school. He has had 16 years of experience. Darrell Woolhiser. formerly of Culver, Ore., has been hired lo teach high school English and serve as wrestling coach. Woolhi ser has a background of coaching in all sports. William Baxter, who has been head football coach at Riddle, has been hired as the new physical ed ucation instructor and head foot ball coach for Glendale. Floyd Wright of Lakeview has been hired as fifth grade teacher. Mrs. Lucille Wnbbe of Medford has been hired as first grade teacher. The School Board awarded a con tract" to' furnish materials for re placement of the high school roof lo the Amspro Corp. of Portland at a cost of about $4,000. The mem bers of the school maintenance crew will install the roof, of alumi num asphalt material, under the supervision of the Amspro company. ton High School after being grad uated from Willamette University in Salem in 1951. BRAND . . . heads for Tokyo at Glide High School four years before going to Florence. Brand's parents are both educa tors. His father, Romayne R, Brand, was principal of Joseph Lane Junior High School for 31 years and is now administrative assistant to the superintendent. His mother is a teacher at John Fremont Junior High School. Brand has been active in com munity affairs and is a member of numerous educational organiza tions. In 1961 he was named junior first citizen of Florence by the Junior Chamber of Commerce. He was later selected one of the 10 outstanding young men in Oregon. He will leave Aug. 20 and will spend some time in Hawaii be fore assuming his new position Sept. 1. Many Youths To Attend YMCA's Summer Camp John Loosley, chairman of the summer activities for youth at the YMCA, reported at this week's board meeting of the "Y" that ev erything points to a most success ful and busy summer program. A large number of youth have al ready made their own expenses to the annual camp at Diamond Lake by selling candy mints. Jack Snodgrass, of the finance committee, reported on future plans formulated for helping the "Y" to take care of last year's, deficit. So far 1963 'membership and fi nances are ahead of last year's ligures. - - . - c i Mrs. A. G. McLain urged' mem hers to contribute to the World Service program sponsored inter nationally by the YMCA. Contribu tions will be received up to De cember 1963.
