The federal deduction has been eliminated, but you can deduct the full amount of your higher atate tax from your federal in come tax return. This means a lightly lower federal tax, hence in effect Uncle Sam will be pay ing part of your higher state tax bill. Wage earners who have their tate income tax withheld from their pay checks won't notice the difference until their first pay check in October. That's when tho new rates are expected to go Into effect The new state Income tax meas ure will become law Sept. 2 un lesi It is referred by the voters. If it is referred, the legislature has set aside $300,000 and a date in October for a special election. Under the new tax measure, the familiar $600 exemption is gone. It has been replaced with a $22 credit for each dependent. They planned to go directly to Denver, Colo., where they will visit relatives and will re turn through Arizona, touring the Grand Canyon, and into California to do aome sightseeing en route home. Jerry Rust Jr. has arrived home from the University of Oregon where he finished hii sophomore year. Accompanying him home as overnight guests were Nick Oat way ot San Rafael, Calif.; Bob lie (iraff of San Moreno, Calif.; and John Martinez of Long Beach, Cal if. The boys are fraternity brothers. Jerry was selected as a delegate to the National Student Association in j Bloomfleld, lnd., at the University I ot Indiana. The Senate Finance Committee Wed nesday approved bill to give World War II and Korean War veterans an opportunity to renew G.I. life insurance they have al lowed to lapse. Although the Senate has passed the measure at least five times previously, it always has died in the House. The rates start at 2 per cent, then increase in quarters of per centage points to Vh per cent. Most steps are graduated up for each $500 increase in taxable in come. Tho new bill gives unlimited medical deduction in excess of S ner cent of income, adds a stu dent exemption, and allows heads of households to file joint returns. The measure also allows a 5 per cent standard deduction. The capital gains tax is liberal ized, and corporate excise taxes wero increased. If the tax bill doesn't raise enough money, a one-shot speedup of withholding taxes can be used to bring in about J14 million at the end of the biennium. If the bill raises too much mon ey, provision has been made for all surplus in excess of $10 mil lion to be applied as an offset aliainst oroocrtv taxes.' The ortuinal title of the tax measure, "relating to personal income and corporation excise taxes." was changed by the con ference committee to include "and local property tax relief." They added three table lamps, a floor lamp, end tables, an additional chair, ash trays, and a large glass basket of artificial flowers. Committee co-chairmen for the project were Mrs. Mary Harris and Mrs. Ed Harris. Fifteen members of the Glendale Rebckah Lodge attended the recent Rebckah Assembly meeting in The Dalles. Fourteen of the group com prised a drill team which partici pated in the ceremonial, seating the officers on the opening eve ning. The team, wearing new gowns chosen for the occasion, carried stalks of wheat as the flower chosen by the retiring president, Mrs. The! ma Watkins of Wasco. Mrs. Leo Ragan and son, Rick, 16, went to Eugene Saturday, when Rick and his grandmother, Mrs. Thclma Greer of Eugene, took the Shasta Daylight to Los Angeles. From there, the two boarded the Pan-American plane bound for Panama City. They were met there by Lt. and Airs.- J. B. Oerding, whom they will visit for about a month. A Goldwatcr spokesman said the meeting did not concern the senator's position on future civil rights legislation.
