GERALD FOX The Glendale PTA scheduled its last meeting half an hour early so that members could view displays set up in the high school gym by shop classes of the high school and 4 11 groups from the elementary school. The high school display in cluded work by the mechanical drawing department and the vari ous projects of the woodworking and metal working classes, from the comparatively simple work done by the first year classes through to the beautifully construct ed furniture items made by the advanced classes. Wayne Close it instructor in both mechanical drawing and shop work. j Three 4-11 clubs. The Pebble Pups. 20th Century Miners and the Diamond Ducks, had displays of their projects which had been judged that day by the 411 county agents. Ardith Myers had organiz ed and worked with the clubs in connection with her science worn with sixth and seventh grade class es. Ann Thompson explained the hardness scale of minerals for in terested parents, and Alana Rog ers demonstrated testing the min erals for hardness. Karen .Melil showed the assembled group of par ents the safe way to break a rock. The group then met in the school library for their last meeting of the year. Mrs. Owen Mobley, president-elect, gave a brief report on the State PTA convention which she and Mrs. Frank Creed had attended. We hope that all sheep will be sheared by the 2nd and ) 3rd of July so that we can get all the wool off at least by that date. We had planned earlier to ship sometime around the 10th or the 15th of June, but rainy weather has caused a delay in the pick up of other pools; so, consequent ly, dates for shipping have had to be moved back a couple of weeks. This is going to result in some loss of weight in some of the wool, but this shouldn't be anywhere near enough to make up the dif ference in the total price. Our overall price seems to look bet ter all the time. We will be send ing out a notice to tho growers of their assignment of shipping days as soon as we have firmed up for sure the exact date and 1 time. And, we will try to send it : out about a week prior to the ship- mcnt. 21 Vi Cents Brought The Livestock Association Lamb Pool for the week of June 8th brought 21' 4 cents. During the regular meeting, awards were presented. Dens 1 and 2 served refreshments. MOSHER ship through the pool. Tho Board of the Lamb Pool also are con templating a feeder sale the last of June or first of July. Plans will be going ahead with that be fore long. We probably won't send out a notice until a week or ten days prior to the sale. They also anticipate holding a second sale about the middle of July to help out those fellows that want to sell at that lime. Few feeder Iambs have been moving as yet, to the best of my knowledge, but it looks like I lie price on feeder lambs should he better than last year. Feeder lambs are selling high in California and there don't seem to be enough to meet the demand. All in all, it looks like a pretty good year for the sheepmen. Oilier activities coming up elude the Ham Sale which will be held .luly 13th: and, of course. the Douglas County Fair on August 14th through the 18th. I hope that everyone will be at the fair and at the Itam Sale. Numbers Grow Cattle numbers in Douglas Coun ty seem to be increasing steadilv. Estimates on beef cattle for 1962 run about 10,000 head. This has been a gradual increase over the years. In 1940, it was estimated that we had about 2,600 head of beef cows, and as late as '55 about 7,000. In 1901, there was 9,000 head. and in 1962, it appeared that we had about 10,000 head. Cattle num bers are slowly increasing as more permanent pasture becomes estab lished. .More and more ranchers in all areas of the county are put ting in unproved permanent pas ture, learning to do a better job of fertilizing and consequently, are raising a lot more feed. They are able to carry more cattle and sheep on the same pastures. Many of our sheep operators are running or should be .running beef cattle witn their sheep. Beef cat tle can utilize feed that the sheep I will not utilize. In many instanc es, it appears to me that our grow ers are not making full use of cat tle that they could. Often, I h e y keep the cattle too fat to really utilize the pasture that they are producing. It appears to me that the best possibility for beef cattle would be t re salvage the feed that tne sheep didn t consume. Sheep Do Beit But, often the case is that the cattle get first pick of the pasture and the sheep utilize what the cat- I tie don't use; or, they have an : equal chance at it. Most of the in- ! formation. I hive, indicates that j sheep will make more money off ! pasture than the cattle. But the combination of cattle and sheep will turn off more money thin I either one separately. In some i places it Isn't possible to run sheep, or in some places it is not prac tical to run rattle. But wherever it can be done, a combination cer j tainly has some definite advan j tages. Perhaps, also, we would get I more use out of our pastures if I we used them a little harder. The I pasture grasses that go to waste, i while they do build the soil a lit- tie bit, don't really offer much I help in a cah income for your , farm. M.J.B. COFFEE Mb. -. 2- lbi 3- lb. 6 oi.
