This includes all expenses during his 4 years at college; tuition, liv ing expenses, books and supplies and $50 per month spending mon ey. He automatically will serve a four year term in the Navy upon receiving his Bachelors degree. Sharon Medlar received two scholarships, one from the Lewis and Clark College at Portland amounting to $950, and $200 from the Federated V91nens Clubs of Oregon. Following the processional, four honor students of the graduating class gave addresses. They were given by John Brown, valedictori an; Tom Roberts, salutatorian; Di ane Foster and William E. Mark ham Jr. Awards and honors were made by Mr. Donald E. Brown, high school principal. These included presentation of the honor trophies to John Brown, valedictorian, and Tom Roberts, salutatorian; and medals to Carolyn McCoy School Spirit, Pat Stoncking - Activities, Joyce Jordan - Music, and Tom Roberts - Athletics. All were sen iors except Miss Stoneking, a jun ior. The American Legion Leadership Awards were presented to Bill Markham Jr., and Sara Preston. Actually, if the students could accept all of the awards for which they were eligible, the sum would be a staggering amount of approx imately $173,500, according to Ken neth A. Stuart, Kiddle Superintend ent. John P. Brown, valedictorian, has accepted a West Point Mili tary Academy appointment. He also received appointments to An napolis Naval Academy, the Coast Guard Academy, NROTC admis sions at Stanford University, and a full tuition scholarship to the University of Chicago. This is Rid dle's second West Point acceptance in two years. Rex Nichols re ceived a similar appointment last year. Thomas L. Roberts, salutatorian, received a four-year tuition schol arship and loan privileges at Stan ford University. He also received a full tuition award from the Uni versity of Oregon and admission to their "honors college" program. William li. Markham, Jr., honor student, received appointment to the Coast Guard Academy, NROTC admissions to Oregon State Uni versity, and athletic scholarship bids from Willamette University and Pacific University. He is also first alternate for other military academy appointments. Diane "Dee Dec" Foster, anoth er honor student, has been award ed a $1000 American Legion Auxil iary National President's Scholar ship (one of 10 In the nation) and a Reed College tuition scholarship. She also was offered a full tuition scholarship and work privileges at Lewis and Clark College. Carolyn Mauck, another honor student, received a full tuition scholarship to Southern Oregon Col lege and a state PTA Teachers scholarship. Both are $300. Literature Exams .. i . . - Undergone At MC Myrtle Creek High School jun iors recently participated in an American literature examination standardization program. Measurement of achievement in the knowledge and understanding of the writings of American au thors from 1860 to the mid-twentieth century was the goal of the examination. Forty-six juniors took the test. It was announced during the eve ning that at least 26 of the 36 members of the class plan to en ter college, vocational training, or military academies this fall. Sara Preston received a tuition scholarship to the University of Oregon and also was the recipient of the Riddle PTA scholarship.- Donna Owens was awarded full tuition to the Eugene Beauty Col lege. Based upon authoritative esti mates, current four year terms at a military academy cost $35,000, The NROTC programs, which also grant the young men their tuition, books, training cruises, and other allowances, far exceed regular college costs. Thus, this accounts for the total value of the awards garnered by the above mentioned graduates of the Class of 1903 at Riddle High School. JERRY FULLERTON, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Fullerton of Green, has graduated from Washington State University with a degree of Doctor of Veterinory Medicine. Fullerton plans to remain in Washing ton and fake the state board examinations and then go on to take the Oregon ond Calif ornia exams later. Some of the plans for next year include having Mrs. Bernice Smith, Douglas County nurse, talk to the club and possibly tour the V. A. Hospital. As student body treasurer in her junior year, she proved her cap ability and efficiency. She was an enthusiastic supporter of , Project 35 and earned a trip to Mexico with that group. Norma Haas began her 'leader ship as a freshman, as president of her class. In her junior year she served as Girls League presi dent and, as a ' senior, she Was president "of! the, , Honor Society. Rally team claimed much of her time during the junior and senior years. The girls will spend five days attending educational classes and social events on the campus. Ac cording to Mrs. William Raburn, leader of the 4-H group, each girl received a $20 scholarship which was sponsored by the Myrtle Creek Bank, Days Creek Home Exten sion, Myrtle Creek Drug Store and the Days Creek Garden Club. Eighty scholarships are annually donated by interested business firms, organizations and individ uals throughout Douglas County.
