Douglas County Bank Awarded Contract For City Bond Issue The Douglas County State Bank; the area near St. Joseph's Catholic Monday night was awarded a con-1 Church. Douglas County State Bank bid the bonds in at a net interest rate of 3.3406 per cent over the 20-year period. Total interest costs will be $46,660.70. Other Bidders Other bidders were First Na tional Bank of Roseburg, with a net interest rate of 3.4000 per cent; and U.S. National Bank of Port land, Roseburg branch, with a net interest rate of 3.4539 per cent. In other action, the proposed im provement of a one-block stretch of SE Washington Ave. on the hill above SE Chadwick Street, was postponed indefinitely until resi dents of the street initiate action calling for the improvement. City Engineer Ken Mens pre sented preliminary plans for the project, about $10,000 in cost. The city would pay about 30 per cent of this cost, for a 29-foot-wide street with a sidewalk on one side. Residents of the area who ap peared at the meeting Monday night showed no desire to proceed with the plans, so Mayor Thomas Garrison called for tabling the mat ter until residents of the street be come interested in the project. Bids Opened The council opened bids for in stallation of sanitary sewer exten sions in the NW Lynwood Street area and on W. Pilger Street. Col lins Construction Co. was the lone bidder on both projects, and both bids were rejected as being above the engineer's estimate. Bids will be called for again on both proj ects. Francis Street, which will join W. Harvard Boulevard near the west side fire station. running along the property line of land recently acquired by the church and joining in with the W. Bertha Street extension. It is felt these new streets will serve to greatly relieve the traf fic bottleneck caused by heavy traffic in the area during church functions. State Talent Contest Draws Grange Youth A group of talented Douglas County young folks who swept the field in the District Grange Youth Talent Contest held at Dor ena in April, will compete for state honors tonight. The council called for city at- Truckers Staging Insignia Contest The Douglas County Log Truck ers Association inc. now nas a contest under way for the best drawing to be used as a decal to designate membership in the asso ciation. Closing date, with entries to be postmarked by midnight, is June 30. Planned primarily to secure an identifying insignia, the contest has a secondary purpose of provid ing a competitive activity tor youth of the county. The winning drawing will be used in decal form on log trucks used by members of the association and oy tne asso ciate membership made up of merchants and loggers. It must contain the initial or name of the association. Contestants must be between the ages of 6 ami in inclusive, anu must be residents of Douglas coun ty. Entries must be on paper, post er board or other similar media in standard 8 Mi by 11-inch size. Name, address and phone number must be on the back of the entry. A contestant may not submit more than three entries. There will be a first prize of $25 and a second prize of $15. Judging will' be held July 9 and the winner will be notified by mail by July 12. Roseburg Firm Low On Medford Project Murphy Construction Co., Rt 2, Box 627, Roseburg, was apparent low bidder at $187,990 basic bid for construction of the Jackson County Public Health Center in Medford. Five bids were submitted, four of which were within $790 of each other on the basic proposal receiv ed at the County Courthouse in Medford. Two firms' bids were identical. Ausland Construction Co., Grants Pass, and Loren Ritchie, Medford, each offered bids of $187,- 990 basic. Third low was Barn- hart Construction Co., Medford, al $188,525, and high bidder was liar old Salter, Rogue River al $191,536. Plans call for a singie-story struc ture with about 9,350 square feet of floor space. Center Street residents on hand to voice their case for oiling. One resident of the street laid the dust problem was the worst it had been in 13 years. The council approved the use of crankcase oil for the dust oiling on, these two projects. Each street which wishes any similar dust oiling projecti will be handled on an individual basil for the remainder of the year, the council decided.
