The whole idea of Sunday night games was to beat the intense day-time heat In Houston and it worked out fine when the game was played In pleasant 79-dcgrce temperature compared with 95 degrees during the day. Houston's pitchers have been even hotter than that recently, yielding a total of only two runs in the Colts' last three games. That's the dale on which the television fights shift from Satur day nights back lo Friday nights. An ice show will be occupying Madison Square Garden at the time. "We'd like to have him on tele vision that night," Brenner ex plained, "in a defense against the winner of a London fight between ex-champion Luis Rodriguez of Miami Beach and Brian Curvis of Wales." Clowns Amaze Fans With Crazy Antics Baseball fans became slightly confused by the antics of the In dian-po-it Clowns in their exhibi tion battle with the Brooklyn Start Saturday at Legion Field. Stealing bases the wrong way from second to first and the sany comedy routines of Nature boy Williams added up to plenty of laughter. So much laughter In fact that acorckeepers became completely confused and the winner of the game remained a mystery, though several unofficial reports had the Clowns winning by a close margin over the hard-hitting Stan. Loud were the boos, particular ly from a large segment of Latin American Fans, when the 9-6, 8-7, 5-10 decision enabled Griffith to win back the crown from Rodri guez., who had taken it from Griffith on a unanimous but con troversial verdict at Los Angeles March 21. The United Press International scored Saturday's fight in favor of Rodriguez, 8-6-1. And a poll of 26 sports writers in the Garden favored Rodriguez, 18-7-1. Each fighter weighed 146V4 pounds and they went into the ring at "even money." Jaycee Jr. Golf Clink Scheduled The Roseburg Junior Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a jun ior golf clinic for youngsters 18 or under at the Stewart Park course June 14 and IS. Jack Schvancvcldt, golf pro at the Roseburg Country Club, will be the instructor for the clinic. The clinic will be held from 8:30 to 10:30 each morning. Youngsters planning to take advantage of the sessions should arrive at the course by 8 a.m. to register and pay the 50 cent registration fee. Each participant is encouraged to bring his own clubs if possible. Golf clubs will be furnished for those not having their own. The purpose of the Jaycee golf clinic is to develop the junior golf ers game. The clinic precedes the Jaycee Junior Golf Tournament which will be held June 21-22. Win ners from the local tournament will travel to Madras to compete in the state Jaycee Junior Golf Tournament. After winning only one of three garnet and being plagued by er rors in the openers, the local crew displayed moments of greatness over tne weekend oy winning three and losing two to even the record for the year at 4-4. Friday Lockwood Motors opened the rugged three-day stand with a lopsided 13-z victory over Corvallis, then came on Saturday to solit a twin-bill at Albanv before return ing home Sunday to divide a pair againsi norm neno. The host Cum mines Movers of Albany whitewashed the local nine in the seven-innine ooener Satur day by a 4-0 count, but Roseburg bounced back with a 7-3 victory in the nightcap. Sunday Ron West brooks starred on the mound as he blanked the Tower Motors Team of North Bend, 9-0. However the invaders came back to avenge the loss by dumping Roseburg, 5-3 in the second game. westbrooks' performance rated as the top pitching job turned in during Saturday or Sunday's ac tion. The flashy Myrtle Creek southpaw displayed uncanny con trol at he went seven innings with out issuing a free pass. The in vaders tagged Westbrooks for three hits, but after the first batten) in tne second inning he retired 18 batters in a row with the aid of two double plays. Westbrooks fanned nine North Bend batters. The victory evened IP' IF WILD RIGHT thrown by challenger Emile Griffith backs champion Luis Rodriguez away early in their welterweight title fight Saturday. Williams Wins Saturday Dick Williams joined the winners as he pitched the five inning nightcap at Albany. Wil liams struck out but three Cum mings Movers, walked three and allowed five hits. However, some timely hitting provided the talent ed Roseburg right-hander with plen ty of runs. Williams also has a 1-1 record on the mound. Jim Beamer, Bob Manning and Lance Cascbeer' provided the hit ting power during the four games. Beamer came to life after a slow start and posted a perfect 4-4 rec ord at the plate against North Bend, driving in three runs. Saturday the local team was blanked on four hits by Albany's Rich Hibbard. Roseburg's Jerry Boucock found himself down by one run in the first inning when Mike Edwards was safe on a field er's choice, Ron Malone walked, Dave Stanley singled to load the bases and a wild pilch brought Edwards home. The Cummings Movers took a 3-0 lead in the fourth when Malone blasted a two-run homer to deep right-center , field. The final run came in the sixth frame on a dou ble by Russ Isom, a throwing er ror and a single by Jim Klankie. Klankic and Isom each had two hits for the winners. Manning put Lockwood Motors In the lead in the first inning of the second game when he slapped the ball over the left field fence 330 feet from home plate. Still the battle was far from over as Albany picked up a pair of runs in the second and another in the third. In the second innine Jim Coolcy walked to start the rally, McKay Drugs by a 5-4 count. Pushing across a single run in the bottom of the seventh, the winners stayed within striking dis tance of league leading Mock Mo tors. Bill Franks scored the win ning tally when he led off the seventh with a single, moved to third on a ground out and raced home on a passed ball. Franks, leading a Roseburg Merchants team strengthened by the reporting of college boys, was the big-gun at the plate with a 2-4 record, including a two-run homer in the fifth. Larry Burr and Ron Cray each had 11 rec ords. Ted Schlachl picked up two hits in three appearances at Ihe plate for the losers. Two successive errors allowed the tieing run ti score, and Klankie smashed a sin gle through the box to bring Isom home with the go-ahead run. A double by Stanley and a single by Cooley gave the Cummings Mov. crs a third run in the third frame. Roseburg Rally Roseburg bounced back with a six-run explosion in the fourth. Casebeer's four-bagger over the fence in deepest centerfield start ed the big rally. With one away Westbrooks was safe on an error, Boucock walked and Williams sin gled to load the bases. Mike Blom berg walked to force in the tieing run and leave the bases bulging. At this point Cooley came in lo pitch. Another walk put the local team in front, while a fielder's choice, a wild pitch and an error on a dropped ball at the plate pro vided Lockwood Motors with insur ance runs. Sunday the Roseburg crew caught fire behind Westbrooks pitching '.o roll to the 9 0 victory in the opener. In the first inning the winners built up a two-run mar gin as Blomberg was safe on a fielder's choice after Morrison had walked, Manning reached base on an error and Beamer collected his first hit of the afternoon to drive in Blomberg. Cascbeer walked to load the bases and Bruce Wassom got a scratch hit with Manning racing home. In the second inning Morrison singled and Blomberg beat out a bunt with Morrison moving to third on a throwing error. A balk brought Morrison home. .Manning walked and Beamer singled to score Blom berg. The Roseburg wrecking crew ended the scoring with a five-run rally in the fifth. The runs came on four hits, one error and a walk. Manning's towering triple to deep left field was the big blow, driv ing in two runs. Singles were col lected by Beamer, Artie McDon ald and Dave Sevall. Roseburg's two-game win skein was brought to a screaching halt in the second game as the inva ders from North Bend built up a 5-0 lead en route to downing the host squad, 5-3. No-Hitter Spoiled Alike Hurray had a no-hitler go ing until the fifth inning when Jim Beamer came to pinch hit with one man out and drilled a single past third. With two away Murray found the going rough as McDon ald, Casclieer and Kinyon picked up basa raps, and Sevall was safe on an error before Dan Rohde came on to get Mike Markham to pop up to the catcher to end the game. Rohde had been tagged with the loss in the opener. North Bend drew blood in the first inning when Wayne Anderson was safe on a bobble, advanced on a pair of wild pitches and scor ed on Carl Denhart's single. In the second a single by Dan Weybright, a sacrifice, a wild pitch and a base blow by Anderson put the in vaders in front 20. Two more runs scored for North Bend in Ihe third. Mike McKenzic led off with a double and advanced on a wild pitch. Denhart worked his way for a free pass, then stole, second. Hike Weybright singled McKenzic home and Denhart scor ed on a run down of Mike Wey bright between first and second. A bunt single by Murray, a throwing error on a bunt and a pair of walks gave Tower Motors an insurance run in tho fourth. Roseburg's three runs crossed the plate in the fifth inning up rising, and the tieing run was left stranded at second base. With eight warm-up games un der its belt, Lockwood Motors will open in Doug-Lane League play Tuesday before the home fans. Tuesday Willamette of Eugene will invade for a 6:30 p.m. double header at Legion Field.
