SANCTUARY COMPLETED Special services Thursdoy, on Memorial Day, will mark tho official dedication of the sanctuary of the church of The Open Bible in Roseburg. Services will be held at 2:30 and 7 p.m. (News-Review Photo) New Open Bible Church Dedication Set Memorial Day Memorial Day marks the date when the newly finished sanctu ary of the Church of the Open Bi ble will be officially dedicated. Rev. Lawrence A. Smith, Jr., pastor, reports there will be two services during the day to com memorate the event. The afternoon service will be held at 2:30 p.m with the Rev. T. H. Staton, pastor of the San Gabriel Open Bible Church, as guest speaker. Special music will be presented and a din ner will be provided for all out-of-town guests at S p.m. The evening service will be held at 7 p.m. with the Rev. T. A. Tousley. Dastor of the Pasadena. California Open Bible Church, as guest speaker. A special feature of both services is the Harborlights quartet from Lighthouse Temple in Eugene, Oregon, well-noted in ums ilea xur weir singing. Officials present will be Rev. H, C. Klapstein, Divisional Superin tendent ana me ttev. aero Brad' (haw, District superintendent. The new sanctuary which covers an area of 5400 square feet was built for slightly over $27,000 and is evaluated for over $60,000. With the exception of one hired carpen ter, most of the other work was volunteer. Highlights of the building are the use of native stone, high lam inated arches, wood naneline. and stained glass windows. Designer of the church is the Reverend Mel Hanson of Portland. The public is invited to attend Doth services. Local News Mrs. Htnry Snyder of Roseburg, who underwent major surgery at uood bamaritan Hospital in Port land Monday, is reported in critical condition. Her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Miles, and her daughter-in-law, . Mrs. Don Snyder, are with her. PICNIC AT GLENDALE Old time Glendale residents or former residents are reminded of the Old Timer's picnic which is scheduled for the Glendale City Park at 1 p.m. on Memorial Day. Kiwanians Hear Park School Speaker Wed., May 29, 1963 The Newi-Roview, Roseburg, Ore. 3 A brief review of the history and operation of P.irk School for men tally retard mi cnuaren was pre sented to the Roseburg Kiwanis Club Tuesday by Bill Williams. director of special education and principal of the school. Introduced by M. C. Deller, who told briefly of the founding of the institution in 1957, Williams pre sented some of the statistics rela tive to its operation. """ 54 Enrolled It has, in its six years, he said, had a total of 82 students, with 34 presently enrolled. Douglas Coun ty provides half of the money need ed to operate the school and the balance is provided by the school districts which it serves. Presently there are 13 students from District 4 in attendance, with pupils from six other Douglas County districts comprising the balance of the en rollment. Williams cited several student case histories to show the var ious ways in which the school strives to make the student bet ter members of society. In some instances, Park School students have been returned to public schools, some pupils have complet ed courses offered at Park and are no longer in attendance and some have been transferred to Fairview, he said. Williams expressed the opinion Child Drowns, One Missing In Swift Reservoir STEVENSON, Wash. (UPI) -One child drowned and another was missing and presumed drown ed in the deep waters of Swift Reservoir northwest of here. Mitchell James 4, drowned when an 18-foot cabin cruiser capsized. His sister, Theresa, 2, was miss ing. Skin divers resumed a search for her bod? today. The Skamania County Sheriff's office said the boat, with seven persons aboard, tipped over about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. The victims were the children of Robert James, 22, and Mary Ann James, 21, who survived. Other survivors were Frances James, 42; Frederick Davis, 43, and Sharon Blankenship, 1'. All were of Woodland, Wash. Sheriff's deputies said the two children were apparently trapped in the cabin of the boat. that the school, which is admin istered by District 4, is an out standing example of a community doing something on its own to work on a problem which affects 3 per cent of our population. In answers to questions from the floor, Williams pointed out that there is always a waiting list for young people to attend the school; that applicants are screened by a board appointed by the county court and the school district and that the most pressing problem in the field of educating the mentally retarded is in getting qualified teachers.
