Tht carrot market, for Instance, Is very strong this week in both the Salinas and Bakersfield areas, but in summer squash items are be coming Donuinr and plentiful. Old potatoes were advancing In price for both No. Is and no. zs, as producing areas wind up, I'rine ville is practically through. Klam ath Falls and Idaho have some potatoes In stock. New Shafter potatoes from caliiornia are ne coming more plentiful, the mar ket easing, and the market is hold ing steady, with demand fair, on new red potatoes. Turnips remained steady. Ru tabagas are through, Put parsnips are still coming out of the Port land area. The market remains firm on new crop onions, mostly out of California. Lattuce was holding steady out of Oxnard and Salinas. Demand for good lots was heavy, but there is a considerable amount of poor stock availablo for which demand is slow. Leaf lettuce, romaine and endive were holding steady. The radish market is strong, and that of green onions steady out of Cal ifornia, but Portland is starting to produce In fair quantities and should be taking over the local market shortly. Winter fruit Fuarte variety av ocados are becoming very scarce, with a few hard shells now avail able. King. burg, Calif,, near Bakers field is becoming the source of .very good summer squash, cucum bers ana romaine now. The cabbage market Is easier, the mialitv good. That for cauli flower is steady, after a strong advance last week. New fields are coming on in the Salinas and Fremont areas of California in about a week. Broccoli holds steady and so docs celery out of Oxnard and further south. The corn market is easing, with supplies improving. Peas are scarce. Artichokes also are on the slack side but available. Egg plant from Mexico is very good, and Indio now is producing pep pers of good quality, hecoming cheaoer and quality better. Demand is picking up slightly on watermelons. Cantaloupes are high priced and scarce. Willamette Valley asparagas Is picking up now, tne quamy very good. Also valley rhubarb is com ing on nicely now in the wine and cherry varieties. Gray announced this week. Col. Gray, commander of the Portland Sector at Adair Air Force Station, said the expansion resulted from a Defense Depart ment decision lo eliminate the San Francisco Air Defense Sector and three others at Spokane, Syracuse and Sault Ste. (UPI) -Baltimore medical examiners an nounced that they have conclud ed from laboratory tests that pro torsional football star Gene (Big Daddy) Lipscomb died "of an overdose of heroin." thief Medical Examiner Dr. Russell Fisher, in a statement said a contributory factor in Lins comb's death Friday morning was nonintoxicating amount of alco hol in the blood.
