MARKET TIPS
Rhubarb Lone Contribution
Of Douglas Co. To Market
y LEROY B. INMAN

Douglas County's lone contribu
tion to the fresh produce market
ii i small amount of strawberry
type rhubarb, and the Willamette
Valley isn't doing much better.
Mort rhubarb, limited amounts
of asparagus and some fresh rad
ishes and green onions are coming
in from this latter area. Washing
ton contributes apples out of con
trolled atmospheric storage, and
should be starting with asparagus
very shortly.
Add from potatoti out of stor
age from eastern Oregon and Ida
ho, the remaining produce is com
ing from the southland.
Tht old potato market was re
ported stronger, as supplies begin
to diminish. New Shatter potatoes
are becoming better with some
weakening in the market. Also Cal
ifornia red potatoes are in better
supplies, the market easier.
Tho carrot markot out of Bakers-
field showed signs of strengthening,
and Salinas was reported about
ready to start. Turnips out of Ox
nsrd are still good. A very limited
amount of rutabagas are still avail
able from California and parsnips
from Portland. Demand remains
fair with the cooler weather.
California and Toxas are supply
ing dry onions now from the new
crop. Jumbo wax onions are report
ed as a popular Item.
, Demand continues good on lettuce
out of Salinas, with some weaken
ing of the market on the poorer
grades. Leaf lettuces, romaine and
endivt remain steady. So does the
market for radishes and green
onions out of Salinas, augmented
by Willamette Valley supplies.
Tho cabbage markot out of Ox-
nard was reported easier now.
The cauliflower market was un

changed. Green broccoli is now
coming out of Salinas as Oxnard
winds up. Celery out of Oxnard re
mains very good, the market
steady.
Froth corn from California and
limited amounts of artichokes, peas
and green beans from the same
place are available. The market
was slightly easier on small arti
chokes but stronger on the large
sizes.
Cucumbers were in limited supply
out of Chula Vista. San Jose has
a good supply of asparagus. The
avocado market remained steady
with good Fuerte variety fruit
scarce.
Tho market was easing on water
melons and cantaloupes, but de
mand is very limited in this area.
The source still is Mexico. Good
Mexican egg plant and peppers are
still available, but the tomato mar
ket is very strong. Demand is
strong and prices nigh, but sup
plies should pick up sharply with
new fields coming on in about an
other week.
Dolicious and Winosap apples
were showing some strengthening.
The' market on Roman Beauties
is very strong as supplies diminish.
Pears and grapes are through until
new crops come on. Some very good
strawberries have been coming in
from California, but the supply and
quality are dependent largely on
the weather.
Navol orongoi can still be had
but are almost gone. New Valencias
are coming along very well now,
but lack the sweet quality of the
Navels. Lemons are plentiful.
Grapefruit remains steady out of
Arizona and Coachilla Valley.
Bananas are unchanged at a
slightly higher level. Pineapples
and coconuts are available, but oth
er tropical fruits are obtained on
order only.

Expense Account
Regulations Hit
Meat Processors
WASHINGTON (UP1) The In-

expense bccuuiu regmauuns nave
been pictured as depressing the
meat industry and striking a sour
note among musicians.
Spokesmen complained Tuesday
that the new rules would mean
more unemployment in the res
taurant, food and entertainment
industries.
They appeared during the final
round of IRS hearings held to de
termine if any changes sould be
made in the rules before they be
come permanent.
B.H. Jones, associate secretary
treasurer of the National Livestock
Feeders Association, said the new
regulations have so frightened ex
pense account spenders that they
are buying cheaper cuts of meat,
depressing the entire meat in
dustry. During the first three months
of the year, he said, the meat in
dustry was hit by "disastrous
price breaks" in sales of trimmed
short loin cuts which include T
bone, porterhouse and other steaks.
President Herman Kenin of the
American Federation of Musicians
said job opportunities for musi
cians "have been curtailed by the
stringent and unjustifiedly severe
regulations concerning travel and
entertainment deductions."
In a statement submitted to the
IRS panel, Kenin said a survey
by the federation showed that 17
of 21 cities polled "reported sig
nificant lay-olis of musicians this
year.
Joel Barlow of the U.S. Cham
ber of Commerce and President
Marvin Leffler of the National
Council of Salesmen's Organiza
tions, criticized the language of
the regulations.
- Barlow said the rules gave the
revenue agent too much lecwav
by stating in several instances
that the question of deductibility
depends on "all the facts and cir
cumstances." He said the wording should be
more specific.
