MC Vikings Topple Irish In Crucial UVL Battles UMPQUA VALLEY LEAGUE (Sub-District i-A-2) Sports Calendar L Pel. OB .875 .833 .667 .500 .125 .000 Myrtle Creek Glendale Riddle Glide Sutherlin Douglas Saturday results: Myrtle Creek 4 3, Riddle 1-1 Glendale 6-12, Sutherlin 0-0 Glide at Douglas, Postponed The high-flying Myrtle Creek Vikings took over undisputed con trol of the Umpqua Valley League baseball lead Saturday by tripping the invading Riddle Irish in both ends of a twin-bill. Ron Westbrooks twirled a nifty two hitter for the Viks in the seven inning opener to post a 4-1 victory, and Steve Gordon limited the Irish to three hits in the five - inning nightcap for a S-l triumph. The double victory gives the Vikings a 7-1 league record going into the final week of play. Myrtle Creek's last league counters will be against Glendale, the team cur rently second in the standings with a 5-1 record. The pair of losses dropped Riddle to a 4-2 mark and put it two games down. Westbrooks was in complete con trol of the deadly Irish bats in the opener as he struck out eight and walked one. The two singles off Westbrooks were collected by Gary Frahm in the third and sixth in nings. Smelling victory, the flashy left-hander set the Irish down with three consecutive strike outs in the seventh inning. Myrtle Creek opened the scoring In the first inning when Tony Quinn walked, advanced on a sac rifice and raced home on John Benson's double. In the second inning the Viks hit paydirt again with Dennis Birenbaum and Quinn walking. Birenbaum scored on Rick Abrahamson's single. Riddle scored its lone run in the top of the third when Keith Hanson was safe on an error, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on Frahm's first single of the game. The Vikings wrapped up the victory with single runs in the third and fifth inning. Westbrooks led off the third with a triple but was thrown out at the plate when Bob Beanblossom hit a grounder at the short-stop. During an argu mcntment at the plate the run ner advanced to second. When play resumed Jim Coon and Ed Moss followed with singles. In the fifth the Viks picked up a single run when Beanblossom was hit by the pitcher, moved to second on an unsuccessful field ers' choice, stole third and romp ed home when the throw got away from the third baseman. The Myrtle Creek nine scored single runs in the first, third and fourth innings of the second game. Quinn led off with a single in the initial inning, stole second and scored on Westbrooks' base rap. In the third Abrahamson singled and moved up on a fielder's choice on a sacrifice attempt with the Irish missing the play at second. Abrahamson scored from second when Westbrooks' bunt was thrown wild at first base. The scoring by the Viks ended In the fourth when Fred Pritt sin gled, moved to second on a throw ing error, took third on an infield bobble and scored on Quinn's sin gle. Riddle scored a run in the fourth when Mike Markham tripled and trotted home on an error. Quinn led the Viks at the plate with a 2-3 record, while Mike Mark- Joe Lane Spikers Trip Marshfield Dick Dicdrich and Ken Cooper led the Joseph Lane Pioneers to a ninth grade track meet victory over the host Marshfield freshmen Saturday. The local crew nipped the Pi rate Frosh by three points. 58-55. Diedrich was the meet's top win ner with triumphs in the 100 and the 220-yard dash in addition to anchoring the winning relay team. Cooper took firsts in the broad jump and the 440-yard run. Coop er soared 18-934 in the broad jump. Other individual winners for Jo Lane were Craig Engle in the dis-i cus, Bill Puckett in the high jump and Dick Hcbard in the 180-yard, low hurdles. 1 The Pioneers won eight of 13 events. RESULTS! ! Pirates remained in the thick of the Umpqua Valley League title chase Saturday by rolling to 6 0 and 120 triumphs over the Invading Sutherlin Bull dogs in a league doubleheader. The victories moved the Pirates into second place in the UVL standings just one game behind the leading Myrtle Creek Vikings. A show-down between the t w o teams is set for Saturday. Glen dale now sports a 5-1 league rec ord, while the loss was Sutherlin's seventh in eight games. Joe Apperson set the Bulldogs down on three hits in the opener, while striking out eight, walking one and hitting one batter. Rojalio Gutierrez tossed three innings of no-no ball against the inviders in the second game, with the game being called after three innings with Glendale leading 12.0. Gutier rez stuck out four and walked four. In the opener the Pirates struck in the first inning when Gutierrez walked with two away. Bill Wa terman followed with a free pass and Bill Hubler singled to drive in the first run. After scoring a single run with two away in the second, the Pi rates broke loose for three count ers in the third. Waterman led off the rally with a booming triple and Hubler walked. Waterman came home on a passed ball and Gary Tooley singled to score Hub ler. Ted Bare reached first on a fielder's choice, stole second, went to third on an error and scored on Apperson'i sacrifice. The Pirates wound up the scor ing with a single run in the fifth. Hubler had a perfect 2-2 record at the plate, while Gary Tooley and Hubert Stewart each went 2-3. In sweeping the twin-bill, the Pi rates wasted little time in the sec ond game, exploding for 11 runs in the first inning. Charlie Tooley singled to lead off the inning, but was thrown out when an attempted sacrifice went astray. Stewart and Jim Redficld walked before u passed ball allow ed Stewart to race home. Water man was hit by the pitcher and Hubler doubled to drive in two runs. Hubler moved to third on a pass ed ball and scored when he beat the throw to the plate on Gary Tooley's grounder. Jerry Schaffer singled to score Gary Tooley from second and Lester Moschkau sin gled to score Schaffer. Gutierrez kept the Pirates moving with a free pass and Charlie Tooley was safe on a fielder's choice with Moschkau scoring. Stewart walked to load the bases and one run crossed the plate on Rcdfield's grounder, with Stewart being thrown out at second. Water man tripled to drive in two runs, then ended the uprising when he scored on a passed ball. (UPI Telephoto) Worley Leads Glendale Thinclads To Four-Way Triumph At Riddle The Pirates of Glendale nipped the Douglas Trojans and the Glide Wildcats in a tight battle for first place in a four-way track meet at Riddle Saturday. Glendale wound up with 8m points and Glide with 87W. Rid- RHS, Joseph Lane Girls Record Wins The Roseburg High and Joseph Lane girls track teams posted vic tories in Saturday's action hosted by Joseph Lane. Roseburg's girl thinclads decis ioned the Fremont and Joseph Lane ninth graders with 29 points. Joseph Lane was second with 33 points and Fremont racked up 31 points. In the seventh and eighth grade action Jo Lane came out on top of Fremont, 83-45. Rexi Nicholson posted wins in the 50 100 and 440-yard races to pace Roseburg, while teammate Judy Zeiglcr won the high jump and softball throw. Cheryl Dickman of Joseph Lane and Donna Luellen of Fremont emerged as double winners in the seventh and eighth grade meet.
