Ron Fairly's Booming Bat Boosts Dodgers To 7-1 Win Over New York Mets Thursday By United Press International They can second guess Walter Alston all they want but they'll never accuse the strong, silent manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers of failing to stand up for a player he likes. A case in point today is Ron Fairly, 24-year old Georgian, who has bounced around between out CB Packers Trade Back, End To Giants For Draft Choice NEW YORK (UPI) The Na tional Football League champion Green Bay Packers today sent defensive halfback John Symank and defensive end Bill Quinlan to the New York Giants in exchange for a high draft choice. The Giants immediately shipped Quinlan, a six-year veteran, to the Philadelphia Eagles in ex change for Gene Gossage, also a defensive end. Of the three players involved, only Quinlan appears in line for a regular job. The 28-year-old former Michigan State star was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in 1956 and after a year in the Army played regularly for the Browns for two seasons. For Your Convenience field and first base the last two years but who almost always somewhere for Alston. He's short on glamour but the thing Alston likes about him is that he's long on base hits. Fairly was hitting only .200 aft er 10 games this season but he's collected 11 hits in his last 24 at bats for a .458 average and it's traded to the Packers in 1959 and was used frequently by Green Bay. Symank was the backup man in the Green Bay secondary and more than likely will be used in the same capacity with the Giants. He has played six seasons in the NFL since being drafted out of the University of Florida by the Packers in 1957. Gossage, the Eagles' 28th draft choice in 1958, joined Philadelphia for the 1960 season after being graduated from Northwestern and saw fairly regular duty. His two victories equal his entire total for the 1961 and 1962 seasons. Ed Bailey drove in three runs with a homer and a single and Orlando Cepeda knocked in a pair with a homer and a double to lead the Giants' 10-hit attack. Bob Bolin, who pitched 4 fe-a in nings in relief of Billy O'Dell be fore retiring in the face of a ninth-inning Cardinal rally, re ceived credit for his first victory. The win put the Giants in a tie with the Cardinals for first place in the NL. Triples by Ernie Fazio and Rusty Staub were the big blows of a five-run seventh-inning rally that gave Houston's Don Notte bart his third win without a loss. Don McMahon finished up for the Colts the third straight time he has preserved a win for Noite bart. Bob Aspromonte and Joe Torre homered for the Braves. (UPI Tele photo). v -::' Southeast Gambling Probe Turns Out Inconclusive ATLANTA (UPD-Georgia At torney General Eugene Cook Thursday released a report on his efforts to determine if any big bets were placed on last year's Alabama-Georgia football game. The report indicated that Cook's findings into the gambling angle of the Butts-Bryant contro versy were not conclusive. The attorney general is investi gating charges made in a nation al magazine article that former University of Georgia athletic di rector Wallace Butts gave secret football information to Alabama coach Paul Bryant before last year's game, which Alabama won 35 0. Cook investigated the report at the request of Gov. Carl Sanders and in an earlier statement con cluded that Butts gave Bryant in formation that could have affect ed the outcome of the 1962 Georgia-Alabama game. Baltimore pitching coach Harry Brccheen insists the home-grown, 24-year old left-hander can do the former and a surprising number of AL experts think he miftht just also accomplish the latter. In any event, the 6-foot, 190 pound left-hander, who was a weekend pitcher for the Orioles in 1962 when he was a private in the Army, is the hottest pitcher in baseball right now. Barber became the major leagues' first four-game winner of Seattle Tops Denver 9-5 In PCL Play By United Pratt International A couple of games thousands of miles apart had carbon copy totals Thursday night in the only Pacific Cocst League action. Both games produced 9-5 vie tories for the home teams with the winners collecting 13 hits and the losers 7. Seattle dealt one of the defeats to Denver for the win ncrs' sixth straight victory, while Hawaii's performance against San Diego indicated that the Islanders may be ready to break out of a season-long batting slump. The Rainiers, Northern Division kingpins, trailed Denver 5-1 but pulled out the decision with a six run explosion in the seventh. A three-run double by Joe Ped razzinl was the key hit in the inning which included four other hits, two walks and a couple of wild pitches. R. G. Smith got the win in re lief of Seattle hotshot Billy Mac leofd. Maclcod, a youngster with a bright pitching future, exited in the fourth when Denver scored four runs on one hit, three walks and a pair of hit batsmen. Big news for Honolulu fans was the return to form of Stan Palys, who was the sparkplug of last year's team. Palys got his first homer and first two runs batted in of the season with one on a belt in the second and then contributed two more hits. Carlos Bernier and Dick Simp son also hit homers for Hawaii. while Dcron Johnson crashed one for the Padres. Fred Newman needed help In the ninth, but got the win. All ten teams return to action tonight.
