Contracts Okayed For Bridge Work SALEM (UPI) The State Highway Commission, has given tentative approval to two con tracts for completion of the As toria bridge, but final approval will be delayed pending approv al of Washington state and the U.S. Bureau of Public Roads. The commission accepted alter nate "A" for $3,777,140 for a poured-in-place deck on the Des-deniona-Sands viaduct portion of the bridge. Bidder was Pomeroy and Gerrick Co., San Francisco. Washington state approval is needed before this contract can be let. 'The $10,121,862 low bid for the bridge steel superstructure, sub mitted by U.S. Steel Corp., Port land, was approved pending agreement by Washington state and the Bureau of Public Roads. This does not include first, second ond third graders, however. (News Review Photos). Blue Scout Rocket Launches Satellite POINT ARGUELLO, Calif. (UPI) A satellite employing a Blue Scout combination was launched today from 'this Pacific missile range, the Air Force re ported. The terse announcement did, not identify the type of satellite, its mission or whether the launch was successful. This was in keeping with Defense Department policy inaugurated a little more than a year ago. The Scout, when used In a four stage configuration, is capable of boosting a 150-pound satellite' into nominal 300-mile orbits. Fri., April 26, 1963 The News-Review, Roseburg, Ore. 3 Khrush Hints At Surrender Of Communist Party Post MOSCOW (UPI) Nikita Khrushchev's reminder to the Rus sian people that he is not im mortal lent weight today to spec ulation he might soon resign one of his top government and Com munist party posts. There was no official indication Khrushchev was under political pressure to make a change, but his public statements on his ad vancing age focused attention on his possible successors in the Kremlin; The spotlight fell especially on Frol Kozlov, 54, a secretary of the. powerful party central com mittee who is considered Khrush chev's heir apparent as party chief, the actual seat of power in the soviet Union. i (U.S. officials in Washington! were reluctant to read too much I into Khrushchev's remarks, but they sensed that the premier i might soon decide to give up some j of his strenuous duties.) The figure was released by Trav is M. Tyrrell, BLM chief of forest management in Oregon and Wash ington. He reDorted the total sale of storm damaged timber in West ern Oregon amounted to 300,436,000 board feet as of the April 15 date. This volume includes concentra ted as well as scattered patches of down timber resulting from the storm. In addition, BLM has an other 978,489,000 board feet of sal vage and intermingled green tim ber cruised, appraised and ready for sale, said Tyrrell. Volume of timber prepared for sale' in Roseburg District was re ported at 171,572,000. , Last January, BLM made 15 million board foot log-scale sale in the Roseburg District, it was noted. Most BLM timber is sold on cruise, or lump-sum basis. That means that all of the merchantable trees are measured and appraised before the sale. Prospective buy ers then bid on the tree measure ment and appraisal, and the tim ber is paid for before it is cut and removed. On log-scale sales the timber is paid for as the logs are removed from the sale area. FIRE TRIGGERS CRASH LONDON (UPI) Nine fire engines raced to a blaze at West minster Abbey Thursday. Two collided with two cars and a bus in Parliament Square. The blaze turned out to be a I man burning rubbish in an Incin ! erator. There were no injuries in i the collisions.
