Newspaper Page TextShip's Anchor Fouls In Cable PORTLAND (UPI) A Liber-' lan freighter trying to go under Portland's Morriso Street Bridge during the rush hour Wednesday caused a massive traffic jam. The harbor patrol said the con verted liberty ship White Moun tain signaled at 4:15 p.m. she wanted the bridge opened to al low her to continue to a berth up 'the Willamette River. When the tender was slow in getting the bridge cleared the ship had to drop anchor to avoid smash ing into the structure. The bridge was opened at 4:25, according to the Harbor patrol, but the White Mountain found her anchor snarled in a section of three-inch telephone cable at the bottom of the river. Special equipment was brought out to free the anchor. Mean while, the bridge stayed open and traffic backed up. The ship eventually was freed and passed the bridge at 4:44, nearly 20 minutes after the bridge opened. J. Lane PTA Sets Year's Final Meet . Officers for the 1963-64 school year will be installed at Monday -night's meeting of the Joseph Lane Junior High PTA set for 7:30 p.m at the school. This will be the final meeting of the current season. To be installed was Mrs. Robert Hansen, re elected president, and Mrs. Carl Schelecn, re-elected treasurer. Others are Mrs. George Lenci, vice president, Mrs. Spen cer Koppang, secretary, and Mrs. Eugene Lincoln, historian. A special invitation is extended to all sixth grade students who will enter Jo Lane next fall, and their parents, to attend this meeting and enjoy an open house where they can learn about the junior high curriculum, according to Mrs. Han sen. Visitation with the teachers will be held and tours made through the building. A refreshment and social period will follow the installation and short business meeting. New offi cers and past members of the ex ecutive board will be honored at this time. 'Gladden Bill' Sent To House SALEM (UPI) The so-called "Gladden bill" was approved 18-9 by the Senate and sent to the House Wednesday. The measure would allow su ' perinlendents of state institutions to remain on the job after the mandatory retirement age of 70 if deemed necessary by the board of control. ... " ' The measure was designed so that Warden Clarence Gladden, who 1s nearing retirement, could remain head of the state, peni tentiary until he has time to train a successor. Gladden has headed Ihe state prison for the past 10 years. Sen. L. W. Newbry, R-Ashland, urged passage of the measure so Gladden would not be forced to retire. Sen.
