Dedication Slated Sunday For New Tri-City Church Another new church will be dedi cated Sunday. It is St. Matthew's Lutheran 'Church at Tri-City. Cubs Get Awards At Dillard Meet " Presentation of awards was a fea ture of the recent pack meeting of Winston-Dillard Cub Scout Pack 136 held at the Dillard School. Den 4 served as color guard for the event with Den Mother Mrs. Nor man Lee directing. . Royce Bates, cubmsler, made the introductions and Mrs. Jack Nelson served as song leader. Awards were announced by Leland Stadig. , . Two-year pins were presented to Brent Peterson, Jeff Bratch, Scott Shapro, Bruce Richey and Brad Kcmpton. Thirty-six awards were given out during the evening's cer emonies. Uniform inspection was held and projects completed during meet ings held in March were displayed for viewing. One of the most striking things about the neat new church for the first-time visitor is the tall, stark cross which seems to hang from space in front of the church. But it is only one of the many notable features of the building, the first real home of the Tri-City Lutherans who began meetings late in 1949, with the Rev. Walter Sylwester. former minister of St. Paul's in Roseburg, as pastor. It wasn't until June 24, 1962, that ground-breaking ceremonies took place. Construction began in July, with Norman Olson of Canyonville as contractor. The construction was made possible through a loan from the district Church Extension Fund. St. Matthew's new house is an "A" frame, wood structure con taining nave, pastor's ' study, fel lowship hall and Sunday School space, as well as a kitchen, stor age room and lavatories. This Sunday, no Sunday school or morning worship will be held, but regular services at 11:15 and Sun day school services at 10 will be held on subsequent Sundays. Open house will follow the dedication. Sentenced To 30 Days Marvel Elwill Blanton, 49, of Monroe, has been sentenced to serve 30 days in the Douglas Coun ty jail and to pay a fine of $100 and $S court costs on a plea of guilty to drunken driving in Dis trict Court Thursday. Sunday Ceremonies To Dedicate New Lookingglass Grange Hall The new home of the Looking- glass Grange No. 927 will be of ficially dedicated at 2 o'clock this Sunday afternoon. Allen P. Wheeler of Portland, state Grange Master, will officiate. Other state officers are expected to be in attendance and participate in the service. Local officers and Grangers from this vicinity will also be present. Musical numbers will be furnished by Mr. and Mrs. Don Morberg and Mrs. Joe Brumbach. An invitation is extended to the public to be present for the dedication and the open house that will be held dur ing the afternoon, according to Hazel Marsh, Lookingglass corre spondent. Historically: the Lookingglass Grange is a unique tribute to the enthusiastic dedication and co-operation of a group of folk bent on reviving the spirit of the Grange and replacing the time-worn build ing used since 1910 when the local group organized as Rescue Grange No. 420. The interest of the first organizers waxed and waned from time to time and in 1944 they disbanded, Mrs. Marsh reports The active members at that time joined the Melrose Grange. In April, 1949, new interest was aroused and the group reorganized under a new name, declaring that "Rescue Grange had been 'res cued' too many times." On April 20, 1949, 27 charter members were given the first de Ship-'N-Shore, Blouse WEEK Open 'til 9 P.M. Fridays gree work by the Stale Grange deputies, Mr., and Mrs. William Howse. Seven of these are active members today. Of the 24 mem bers taking their first degree on Aug. 26, 1910, seven are living: Gladys (Jackson) Wilson, Carrie (Hodge) Cooke, Lillian (Matthews) Busnell, Maude (Ollivant) Bacon, George, Otto and Arthur Mat thews. Masters of the former Rescue Grange still living include: Henry A. Jones, Susie Richards, Wesley J. Meredith and Irving Rodley. This Grange is said to have been the first one in Douglas County. On July 2, 1959, ground was brok en for the new building, and on Feb. 9, 1960, the Grangers held their first meeting in the unfinish ed hall. The building was erected largely by volunteer labor. A unique feature of the construc tion of the 42-by-80-foot hall lies in the effortn of a group of men who went into the woods of the Dysert Brothers' property in Sie bold Canyon near Porter Creek to fall and log the timber and then to help in the sawing of the lumber. The building is a frame structure in rustic design and, noteworlhily, is entirely free of debt. The Grange now has 45 mem bers. Thomas Findlay, who is the current master, is serving his seventh year. Past masters of Grange No. 927 include Wesley Meredith, W. F. Wilson, Susie Oar, Albert Stinglcy and Charles Schulze. OR 3-il0t or OR J-170 First Asian Flu Case Is Reported PORTLAND. (UPI) Oregon's first known case of Asian flu since an outbreak struck the Atlantic Coast last December was report ed Thursday. The State Board of Health said tests showed a woman in Hood River had the disease. There are six to eight other persons in Hood River and White Salmon, Wash., with similar symptoms, the board said. Dr. Grant Skinner, state epide miologist, said the woman had "Pretty-well" recovered from the disease. There have been only a few confirmed cases of Asian flu on the West Coast since the outbreak in the east, Dr. Skinner said. Saturday Legislative Session Seems Certain SALEM (UPIV-A session of the House of representatives this Sat urday seemed a virtual certainty, House Speaker Clarence Barton said recently. In addition to the income and cigarette tax bills, the Friday cal endar already includes more than a dozen other bills. Barton ex plained, and more measures were expected to come out of commit tees today. Barton anticipates lengthy dis cussions on both tax measures, which would necessitate a Satur day session to keep the calendar up to date. DURNIN SWINGLEY Two former Days Creek resl dents, a brother and sister, were Easter weekend guests of their stepfather and mother, Mr. and Mrs. T. Lewis Weaver. Mrs. Clar ice Devoe arrived Saturday morn' ing from Medford and accompan ied the Weavers to Roseburg to meet her brother, Carl Totten of Los Angeles, when he came in by plane from Portland. Totten returned Sunday to Port land to complete his business there before, returning south. He is bead of public relations for Shell Oil Co. in the western states, includ ing Alaska. Totten and Mrs. De Voe, who attended upper grades and high school at Days Creek, rarely have the opportunity for a visit when his work brings him into Oregon as she is employed fulltime at Medford. Another guest at the T. L. Weav er home was Weaver's youngest nephew, Clarence Stone of Seattle, who stopped by for a several-hours' visit on his return from a business sales manager for Forest Interiors Corp. of Seattle. He plans a trip to the New England area "when the weather is better." Stone told the Weavers his parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. Otho Stone, have returned to Seattle from a month's trip to Hawaii. The Stones are former res idents of Canyonville, where he taught school for a, time. Mrs. Stone (Kate Weaver) spent her girl hood there, coming west with her area were Mrs. R. L. Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Frame moved to California early last summer after selling their farm, known as the John Ferguson place, upriver from Days Creek to Earl Soudan. Of interest to local high school students is the fact that Mrs. Clark will be grad uating from High school in Califor nia this spring. She was an honor student as well as being in band and other activities while in Days Creek High School until the end of spring semester last year.
