Ed Panagabko let fly with the insurance goal at 13:39 of the final period, Vancouver shaded the Totems on a shot by Bob McCusker with an involuntary assist from a Se attle defenseman. McCusker's shot, with less than two minutes remaining in the final period, bounced off the unhappy Seattle skater and past Totem goalie Al Millar. The Canucks had taken a .2-1 lead early in the third period on a goal by Bob Kabel. But. Jim Powers got the equalizer for Se attle less than a minute later. The sixth game in the Vancouver-Seattle battle will be played Friday night at Seattle. Beavers Begin Football Workouts Minus Baker CORVALLIS (UPI) About .75 candidates are expected to turn out Saturday for spring football practice at Oregon State. Besides Terry Baker, Coach Tommy Prothro is losing through graduation such line stalwarts as George Gnoss, Ross Cariaga, Dick DeBisschop, John Farrell, Jim Funston, Fred Jones and Paul Seale. 7 Gordon Queen, Baker's under study last season, is expected to take over at quarterback. His main target will be Vera Burke, who caught 69 passes for 1,007 yards last season. Both marks were NCAA records. Gen. Richmond Flowers, charging "politics", ac cused Georgia Atty. Gen. Eugene Cook Wednesday of "aiding in the sacking" of former Georgia ath letic director Wallace Butts. He reinterated a legislative com mittee report that "politics" had a significant part in the Georgia investigation into allegations the Alabama-Georgia football game in Birmingham last season was rigged. ' Canyonville's Tigers and Yon- calla's Eagles will be battling for the advantage in Bico-B baseball OS U-U0 Collide In ND Baseball Opener Friday OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY, Corvallis (Special) Oregon State's defending northern division base ball champions embark on what they hope will be another success ful league season here Friday against Oregon's powerful Ducks. The two old rivals play at Cole man field Friday at 3 p.m., and also have a 3 p.m. encounter slat ed Saturday at Eugene following the Oregon-RYU track meet, OSU edged Oregon to win the N. D. crown in 1962, and later lost two straight to Bob Garibaldi and his Santa Clara teammates for the Western Regional NCAA title. San ta Clara went all the way to the NCAA finals, losing out to Michi gan. Oregon State posted an 11-5 pre conference mark this spring. The Beavers won four of seven games on a trip into Arizona where they met Arizona and Arizona State, two of the best clubs from that area. Both OSU and Oregon rank the top 10 teams nationally. Oreeon won 12 in a row before finally losing a doubleheader to Portland State last Saturday. Coach Ralph Coleman of OSU rates Ore gon as the "team to beat" in the league race, pointing to the Duck pitching .brigade as possibly the best in the west. In pre-conference competition, only three Beaver regulars hit above the .300 mark. Frank Pe ters, getting a late start after the basketball season ended, collected eight hits in 21 trips for a .381 mark to top the club. He also has nine RBI's. Al Lehrer, an all league selection a year ago, poled out 20 bingles in 55 trips for a .364 aver age, and Dave Hayward collected seven for 20 for .350. Hayward has ii nnr. rnmnared to leader in that department, Doug Stahl, who has 12. Stahl won the N. The "fix" allegations were in cluded in an article in the March 23 edition of the Saturday Evening Post. The story claimed Butts and Alabama coach Paul (Bear) Bryant conspired to rig the out come of the clash between the two rival Southeastern Conference schools. Both Butts and Bryant have de nied the allegations. Butts has filed a (10 million libel suit against the Post and Bryant has initiated a $5 million libel action against the national magazine. The Warriors have shown good hitting power in the few games they have been able to play, but have been hampered by the weather. McKenzie's probable starter is Dennis Baldridge. . In the Bico-B race the defending champion Eagles are favored to repeat as titlists, but Canyonville and Camas Valley rate as strong darkhorse teams. The Tigers have power at the plate and have been getting good pitching, while Yon calla is an explosive club that presents a definite threat at any time The Eagles also have good pitching. Oakland and Elkton go into Fri day's game with 0-1 marks in league play, while Camas Valley is still trying to squeeze in its first game. Track action featuring local teams Friday finds Sutherlin Bull dogs at the Central Relays in Mon mouth and the Powers Cruisers will host the Bandon Tigers. The action at Monmouth starts at 5:45, while the meet at Powers will get under way at 5. Carl Johnson Earns Top Honors In Rifle Shoot Carl Johnson nosed out Pete Serafin for the top honors in the weekly Roseburg Senior Rifle Club shoot Wednesday. Johnson ended with a 388 total from four positions, while Serafin had a 384. Third and fourth spots went to Vern Whittenbcrg and Deane Paulson with Identical 383 scores, while Paul Robinson and Dr. Ray Bentzcn followed with 381s.
