New Boat Ramp Due For Snake River Anglers " Through the generosity of Wood- row Looney of Adrian a new ac cess site will be developed for Snake river anglers. Looney re- . cently made an outright gift ol around one-half acre of land bor dering the river to the game com mission to be developed for an gling purposes. Upon hearing of the gift, Mal heur county expressed interest in the site and offered boat refund money from the boaters' licensing tax for development purposes. The cooperative venture by the game commission and Malheur county will result in the development of a boat ramp and parking area for anglers. In another outright gift to the game commission. The Dalles Rod and Gun Club signed an agree ment giving permanent access to a strip of land along the old De schutes Railroad right of way be low Sherars Bridge closing up the last gap in angler access from Sherars Bridge to the vicinity of AlacKs canyon. The right of way gift is a small parcel between a quarter and a half mile in length but opens up to the public the en tire length of river between Sher ars Bridge and Macks Canyon, a distance of around IS miles. Recently, the game commission completed the access road along the old railway right of way from Sherars Bridge downstream to the first tunnel, a distance of around five miles. The tunnel, caved in al most its full length, blocked addi. tional road development. Foot trav el is available to anglers at the present time from this point on aownsiream. H-17 Jim Griffin Posts Top Archery Score Jim Griffin fired a spectacular 756 total to pace the Roseburg Rod and Gun Club Archers in the Gold round compctiton at the weekly shoot. Griffin's score earned him top honors among the men competing in the instinctive class. Russ Toll followed closely with a 744 and Harry McGarvey fired a 706. Oth er top scores in the men's instinc tive class were: Mel Holcomb, 668; Dick Johnson, 658; Charles Puch, 598; Bill Austin, 463; and Bill Han Itad, 441. In the men's freestyle action Jack Coverly topped the field with a score of 738. Second place went to Duane Alexenko with a 688. Harry Evans fired a 682 and Bill Townsend a 648 to complete the list. Bev Toll led the women's instinc tive class with a 624, followed by Dorothy Austin with a 600 and Kitty Alexenko with a 442. . Several members of the Rose burg Rod and Gun Club Archers competed in the Siskiyou Bow Hunters Pre-Easter Field Shoot over the weekend. In the men's freestyle competition Russ Toll had a 383 score, while McGarvey had a 248 and Don Pritchett a 267 in the men's instinctive class. Bev Toll recorded a 178 in the women's instinctive class and Shir ley Pritchett a 158. Other local archers shooting were Harry and Ruth Evans and Jack and Vivian Coverly. Depend ing upon the type of construction and material used, certain proced ures should be followed. The boat manufacturer can best answer specific questions but here are some suggestions. With the boat tilted up and the drain plug removed, wash both the interior and exterior with warm water and a mild detergent. If the boat was kept in the water last season and was not cleaned be fore putting it into storage, it may take some doing to remove cling ing growth from the hull. The blade of a putty knife, a wire brush and steel wool can be used effectively for this purpose. A clean smooth bottom is very important in get ting the best performance from a boat. ' Hardware should be checked for Baseball Action Stopped By Rain Baseball action in' Douglas Coun ty suffered another setback Tues day with the rain and snow forc ing postponement of two Bico-B League games and two non-league outings. In Bico-B action the Yoncalla Camas Valley game at Camas Valley and the Oakland-Canyon-ville game at Canyonville were rained out. Both games will be made up as soon as the weather clears. The two postponed . counters brought the total to four out of six scheduled games to date. In the two games that have been played, Yoncalla and Canyonville hold victories. Friday Canyonville travels to Yoncalla and Elkton is at Oakland. Non-League games rained out Tuesday included Heedsport at Roseburg and Crow at Drain. Beware of "bargain" life pre servers. Unless they carry a Coast Guard approved label, you may be told to replace them before you even get on the water. corrosion and pitting. A good pol ish will usually restore most of the lustre, but in some cases badly damaged hardware may have to be replaced. Especially if the boat is used in salt water, bright metal hardware and trim should be wax ed or polished frequently through out the season. Equipment should be thoroughly inspected at the beginning of each season. Faulty life preservers may make good scat cushions but they won't be of much use if you sud denly need them to keep you afloat in an emergency. Life preservers and jackets do not last forever. Re place them as soon as they fail to do their intended job. An anchor, if you can keep from losing it, should last a lifetime. Anchor lines, however, are a differ ent story. They should be checked periodically for rot and fraying. You'll find your lines will last a lot longer if they are dried thor oughly before being put away. Inspect the steering system for loose cables and pulleys. For max imum control, cables .should be tight and free of excessive wear. A frayed cable will sometimes bind and make steering difficult. Don't overlook the electrical sys tem. Make sure running lights and other accessories are operating properly and the wiring is in good condition. If your boat is equipped with an automotive type battery, check for cracks and corrosion on the battery and cables. It's a good idea to start the season with a ful ly charged battery. Your trailer will also require some preparation. Inspect the tires for wear and see that they are properly inflated. Pull the wheels and check the bearings. Water will sometimes get past the seals and cause the bearing to rust. Wheel bearings should be reDacked at least once each year. I Be sure the rollers turn freely. A few drops of oil will help keep them free. Also check and lubri cate the coupling mechanism. If the trailer is equipped with lights, a thin coating of watcr-proof grease will protect the sockets from cor rosion. Following these suggestions will keep your equipment running long er and looking better, and as a result, make it worth more when you're ready to trade for a new rig.
