19 63 Trout Season Set To (Set Under Way Saturday Special Rules, Regulations Summarized For Fishermen In Umpqua River System With rods unlimbered and reels well oiled, anxious fishermen await the opening ot the 1963 trout sea son Saturday The adventurous fishermen will take to the woods and lakes in search of the wiley trout, with each angler having his own favorite spot for opening morning.-. . - - Opening Saturday will be all wa ters of the state to trout angling, except the high lakes within na tional forest boundaries in the Cas cades, and the coastal streams in xone 1. The Umpqua rivers system is included in zone 3, and the major area affected by Saturday's open season is the Copco impound ments above Soda Springs Dam. These impoundments will be open through Oct 31. " - Special regulations and closures in zone 3 include: ' ,. 1. North Umpqua Reservoirs All Copco impoundments above Soda Springs Dam will be open April 20 to Oct. 31. 2. North Umpqua River is closed to all angling from or on any boat or floating device between Win chester Dam and Soda Springs Dam, and on Lemolo and Toke tee Reservoirs above the posted deadlines established by the Game Commission. 3. North Umpqua River and trib utaries (exclusive of lakes) is closed to angling in any manner other than artificial flies from the presently established deadline near the mouth of Rock Creek upstream to a point SO yards below Soda Springs Dam, and is closed to all angling from Soda Springs Dam to a point 50 yards downstream. 4. North Umpqua River is clos ed to all angling from the Win chester Dam to the old Highway 99 bridge. , 5. Steamboat Creek and tribu taries is closed to all angling. Opens May 25 6. Fish Lake is open May 25 to October 31 except for that portion extending east of a line beginning at a point 400 feet north of and extending to a point 400 feet west of the mouth of High Rock Creek which is open July 1 to Oct. 31. Fish Lake tributaries are closed to all angling. - - . 7. Loon Lake is open the entire year with' summer bag limits in effect. 8. Smith River is closed to ang ling from any boat or floating de vice above a point 200 feet below Smith River Falls. 9. Diamond Lake is open May 25 to Oct. 31, except those por tions within a radius of 450 feet of the mouths of Silent and Shot creeks and 1,000 feet of outlet which are open July 1 to Oct. 31. The major portions of the North Umpqua and the trout season on the South Umpqua and main Ump qua will open May 25. The main Umpqua and tributaries above and including Elk Creek, the North Umpqua to Mott Bridge and the South Umpqua to Jackson Creek will stay open until Oct. 31. The North Umpqua from Mott Bridge to Soda Springs Dam and the South Umpqua above Jackson Creek will be open May 25 to Sept. 2. Trout limit in the main Umpqua and tributaries below Elk Creek is 10 fish per day not less than eight inches, with not more than five over 12 inches. In the re maining areas of the Umpqua, North Umpqua and South Umpqua the limit is 10 fish per day not less than six inches, with not more than five over 12 inches. Limit for seven days or in pos session is 20 fish, with not more than 10 over 12 inches. In addition to the trout season the spring salmon season is re ceiving plenty of attention from local fishing enthusiasts. This sea son is currently in progress in the main Umpqua and the North Ump qua below the narrows at Rock Creek. The spring salmon season started March 23 and ends June 3. Limit is two fish per day and four in seven days,' or possession, not less than 12 inches in length. The summer steelhead season begins May 25 and runs through Oct. 31, except above Mott Bridge on the North Umpqua where the season closes Sept. 2. The aggregate bag limit for salmon and steelhead 20 inches and over is 40 in any calendar year. Not more than 20 may be of either species; however, not more than 10 salmon may be taken up to and including June 10. In the tidewater areas the salm on season for fish 20 inches or over is open the entire year and a fall salmon season is scheduled for Aug. 24 to Oct. 31. GOOD FISHING Anglers report some wonderful fishing last year in 65-acre Mor gan Lake (Union County) which after chemical treatment a few vears ago was restocked with trout. The 1962 creel check shows that anglers caught 35,945 trout, approx imately 599 trout or 150 pounds of trout per surface acre. Rapid growth is indicated by the fact that the fingerlings stocked in 1961 averaged about 11 pounds of trout per surface sere and in 1962 an average of 18 pounds. r - 'in L . I3i. tu . Diamond Warm Water Game Fish To Be Reared In State If plans go well Oregon will no longer depend on outside sources for its largemouth bass, channel catfhish and other warm water game fish. This was brought to light at the game commission's monthly meeting on March 22, when the staff was given the greyen light to develop an area for the production of warm-water game fish, the first of its kind in Oregon. The area will be located near sU Paul in the Willamette Valley on a 30-acre tract of land owned by the commission. Much of the engin eering has already been completed and the commission will call for bids soon on the construction of a series of brood and rearing ponds as the first step in over-all con struction. As many as 20 ponds up to an acre or more in size will be available for the production of warm-water game fish when the site is completely developed. Water for the ponds will be pro vided by a well recently drilled on the site, which produces up to around five hundred gallons a min ute. Production plans call for the rearing of largemouth black bass, black crappie, bluegill sunfish and possibly channel catfish. Previously, in order to stock these game fish in lakes and streams suitable for their produc tion, the commission either had to seine or trap from waters where the fish existed or contract for the fish from other states. Usually it took a year or more before such contracts could be fulfilled. The trout season opens April 20 in most of Oregon's waters, except for the high lakes and other areas listed in the Oregon Game Com mission synopsis. Lemolo Lake last year was ex cellent, and should be again this year, reports Don Tandy, Diamond Lake District Ranger. Roads to Lemolo have been open all year, but are reported to be rough. Small amounts of snow have been falling off and on all week and the snow depth at Lemolo was four inches Monday, . Fishermen planning on making the trip to Lemolo opening day are advised to carry chains, reports Glide correspondent, Mrs. Arthur Selby. Poole Creek Campground will be open and a few spaces in the par tially completed Inlet Campground located at the upper end of the lake are ready for Saturday's in flux of brave outdoorsmen. For those less adventurous, To-' ketee Lake trout will provide a stiff challenge.
