Cheney Makes Debut With Leppert Adds Three Homers By United Press International The Washington Senators aren't being consulted about that "hot line" between Washington, D.C., and Moscow but they sure are in favor of the one between the na tion's capital and Pittsburgh, Pa. The Washington to Pittsburgh "hot line" has. been used by. two different Senator general manag ers in a little more than 18 months with results that must make Pirate G.M. Joe Brown flinch every time the phone rings. On June 29, 1961 Ed Doherty dialed Brown and obtained pitch er Tom Cheney from the Pirates. Then, on Dec. 14, 1962, George Selkirk tried the same number and acquired catcher Don Lep pert for the Senators. Both Chen ey and Leppert are reacting to the change like a pair of G.I.'s who have just been transferred from Siberia to Paris. Hurls One-Hitter Cheney, who last Sept. 12 set a major league record by striking out 21 batters in a 16-inning game, made his 1963 debut for the Senators with a one-hitter Thursday night while Leppert, who hit only three homers all last season for the Pirates, belted three and knocked in five runs in upport of hi battery mate. The result was an 8-0 victory over the Boston Red Sox that put the Senators in the win column for the first time this season. The Baltimore Orioles achieved Oregon Trackmen Set Meet With Stanford On Saturday By United Press International Three great dual track and field meets are slated for Satur day on the West Coast weather permitting. The defending NCAA champion University of Oregon Ducks visit Stanford; powerful Southern Cali fornia hosts. Washington, and UCLA's one-man gang, C. K. Yang, will tackle California at Berkeley. - The Trojans aren't expected to have too much trouble handling Washington. The latest NCAA sta tistics show USC men with the outstanding marks in the nation in four events Brian Polking- Hayward Relays Set For Saturday EUGENE (UPI) - Defending champions South Salem and Cot v tage Grove will be back to defend 'their titles in 27th annual running of the Hayward Relays Saturday. The mammoth high school track carnival began today with compe tition in classes B and C, for the smaller schools. South Salem won the Metro class last year and is favored to make it two in a row. Withdrawal of all the Portland and Metro League schools from the meet has cut the number of schools in that class from 26 to 11 Saturday. Cottage Grove has won seven consecutive Class A titles and is expected to be one of the leading contenders again. Sixteen teams are entered in that division. Two homers by John (Boog) Powell and the five-hit pitching of Milt Pappas enabled the Ori oles to spoil the world champion Yankes' home' opener. Powell hit a two-run homer to snap a 1-1 tie in the fifth and also con nected in the seventh. Pappas al lowed the Yankee run on a fourth-inning homer by Mickey Mantle. New York ace Whitey Ford suffered the defeat. Moss! Leads Tigers 'Don Mossi, one of the Tigers' big question marks, pitched a perfect game for 6 1-3 innings and wound up with a two-hitter. Mossi, only 11-13 in 1962, didn't walk a batter and struck out six. He also had two singles one driving in two runs in the fourth inning and the other leading to a run in the sixth. . Tony Martinez and Gene Green had Cleveland's hits. The White Sox spoiled Bo Be linsky's evening for both himself and fiancee Mamie Van Doren by taking advantage of his wildness to score two runs in tne sixin in ning and assume a lead they held behind the four-inning shutout re- home, 13.9 in the high hurdles; Lew Hoyt, 7 feet, inch in the high jump: Larry Stuart in the javelin at 267 feet, 3 inches; and the S80-yard relay team, clocked in 1:24.9. There could be some outstand ing marks at Stanford, where the Webfoots are just rounding into shape and are slight favorites. They could run into trouble, how ever, if their shot-put star, Dave Steen, does not compete. Steen, who holds the best NCAA mark of the year at 61 feet, iVt inches, attended the funeral of his father in Vancouver, B.C. yesterday, and it is not known if he'll rejoin the sauad in time to compete. Steen also is the leading discus thrower on the squad. However, Stanford has the coun try's best discus tosser in Dave Weill, who has tnrown m icct, 6 inches this year. A good duel shapes up between Harry McCalla of the Indians and Keith Forman of the Ducks in the mile and two mile. There is a eood chance to see the four' minute barrier cracked in the mile event. Yang will enter four, and pos sibly six, events for UCLA at Cal ifornia. He's a 16-foot pole vaulter now. in addition to being out standing in the high hurdles (14:3;, the broad jump (24 ft., lWin.,) and the javelin (Z29 tt, 5V4 in.). He also may enter the discus and high jump. A good race is expected in the 440 where Cal's Dave Archibald (48 seconds) comes against Dave Parsley (48:2) and Arnold Tripp (48:3). (UPI)- If it takes power, come-from-behind, and pitching to win a pennant, tiie San Francisco Giants showed at Houston that they have the in gredients to repeat as National League champions. They showed power in the sea son's opener as they banged out 17 hits and 4 homers on the way to a 9-2 romp. Come-from-behind ability was demonstrated Wednes day when they rallied from a 6-1 deficit to win 8-7 on Ed Bailey's Dags-iammed homer. Thursday night it was pitching's turn with a little more power tossed in as the Giants won it 7-1. Billy O'Dell, who won 19 games last year, set Houston down on three hits and only missed a shut out because errors by Jose Pagan and Chuck Hiller let in a tally in the first. He faced 31 men and retired the last IS in order. The Giant batters meanwhile contributed 12 hits, including Or lando Cepeda's second homer, to keep the team s season average at a round and robust .333. Felipe Alou, Cepeda, and Willie McCovey each had three hits and now are hitting .667, .643, and .500 respectively, with 23 hits in three games. But the harmonious showing at Houston was jarred by one ex tremely sour note. Matty Alou's right knee gave way under him as he was running in the outfield before the game and he was flown back to San Francisco for a specialist's ad vice.. If Dr. Floyd Jergensen decrees that an operation is neded, the stubby outfielder could be lost for the season.
