'King' McElhenny Gives Seattle Fans Display Of Top Grid Action SEATTLE (UPI) The "king" came back to Seattle Saturday and 22,500 of his loyal subjects roared approval. At 33, Hugh McElhenny is a mite older and a step slower than in the days when his flash ing feet carved out a chunk of football history at the University of Washington. Pro football has largely passed him by. Backs are faster now, the pace is man-killing and the former AU-American is headed down the home stretch of a long professional career. Still, nobody got a bigger hand than McElhenny when the public address announcer called the roll as the Minnesota Vikings and the San Francisco Forty Niners of the National Football League matched muscle, might and man power in preseason play here. Show of Coyrag San Francisco won it 30-24 when Bill Kilmer and Jim Johnson col laborated on a 92-yard touchdown pass play. Afterwards, in the dressing room, McElhenny punched a fist over and over into his palm. "I wish we could have won It; I wish we could have won it... dammit!" Nobody in the stands minded too much. He gave them in the third quarter what they came to see a display of raw courage into which he poured all of his vast talents. San Francisco had gained a 20 U halftime lead when Tommy Davis drilled a pair of field goals just before the half ended. Then the "king" returned. Leads Drive He stepped for 3, added 10 mora and still another 10. A Viking pass play fizzled then and Fran Tarkenton, a sophomore quarterback, was hopelessly trapped. Tarkenton shoveled Mc Elhenny a pass that traveled all of 18 inches and off he stormed for 12 mo yards to the Forty Niner five. The next play came as a sur priseat least to the Forty Niners. Mel Triplett, another gent who has been in the program a long time, scored standing up around right end. Sprawled on the grass after a withering block that wiped out a Forty Niner defender was Mc Elhenny. They had given him a plaque at halftime and Hugh smiled and waved up to the stands. It was a fair trade. He gave quite a bit of himself. In The Majors Maor League Standings By United Press International National League W. The 26-year old righthander hurled a three-hitter Sunday night to lead the Padres to a double header sweep over second-place Salt Lake City. Tsitouris picked up his sixth straight victory as the Padres won the second game, 5-2, after taking the opener, 6-2. The victory vaulted the Padres 10 full games ahead of the Bees and left Tsitouris with an 11-6 season record. , In other games, Vancouver topped Tacoma, 2-0, Hawaii de feated Spokane, 8-2 and 7-5, while Seattle split a pair with Portland. Portland took, the opener, 3-2, and Seattle grabbed the second, 5-1. San Diego, which now leads Salt Lake City 4-0 in their cur rent series, won the opener when the Padres gained five unearned runs in the second inning. Tsitouris's cause was aided in the nightcap by Ron Samford who hit a solo homer in the fourth inning to give the Padres their go-ahead run. The hitting of Stan Palys and Hap Richie was the key to Ha waii's sweep. In the opener, each hit homers. In the nightcap, Palys singled in the 10th inning and then stepped aside for pinch runner Bobby Kanoop. Richie then drove in Kanoop with the winning run. Portland nut together tour straight singles in the seventh in ning to top Seattle in their opener. But the Rainiers came back to win the second game on a three run homer by Mike Shannon and two-run round tripper by red Schreiber. Veteran George Bamberger pitched a five-hitter to lead Van couver to victory. He struck out six and walked two as he reg istered his second shutout of the season.
