Charming Affair Enjoyed At Myrtle Creek Tuesday Mrs. Raymond McMurry, retir ing, and teachers not returning to the Myrtle Creek school system were honored Tuesday at 3:45 p.m. at the school cafeteria at a tea given in their honor by the Myrtle Creek Teacher's. Association. Mrs. McMurry, who came to Myrtle Creek in 1952 irom Hawaii, was surprised when presented with a huge orchid and a box ol an thuriums sent here by her broth er and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs, William F. Janssen. ot Honolulu, Hawaii, who cooperated with Miss Mabel Williams, president or tna Myrtle Creek Teacner's Associa tion, In planning the retirement ceremony. Mrs. McMurry also re ceived a certificate of recognition by Miss Mabel Williams, president of the Myrtle Creek Teacher's As sociation. Al Neet, superintendent of Myr tle Creek Schools, presented the orchid to Mrs, McMurry. Mrs. Ronald Weaver and Miss Gladys Williams placed leis on the following teachers not returning to the Myrtle Creek School next year: Ronald Barnick, Mrs. Berna dine Dawson, Miss Norma Evans, Robert Klcnke, Mr. and Mrs. Mel vin Knoyle, Miss Ethel Loomis, Mr. and Mrs. William Ludwig, Ed ward Olson, Mrs. Wayne Smith, Clair Walters and Mrs. Harold Wenstrom. The cafeteria was decorated In Hawaiian motif. Hawaiian symbols were displayed behind the head table which was lavishly decorated. An atmosphcro of Hawaiian music lent to the gala atmosphere. They were as sisted by Mrs, June Grecco, Mrs. Harry Fuller and Mrs. Ernest Strause. Miss Betty Hubbard was In charge of the music interludes. Mrs. McMurry and her husband came here from Hawaii in 1952. Mrs. McMurry taught nine years as fifth grade teacher at Myrtle Creek. Prior to this time she taught for 33 years in Hawaii. Mrs. McMurry said, "I have en Joyed teaching at Myrtle Creek and may come back some day." Mr. and Mrs. McMurry have no definite plan for their retirement. Dennis Brainard Honored At Picnic In Afternoon Dennis Brainard, who has since left to make his home in Nebraska, was pleasantly wunpriscd Sunday afternoon, when members of the seventh and eighth grade Sunday school class of Yoncalla Methodist Church surprised him at a fare well picnic. Mrs. Robert Smith is the teacher. The young people drove out to a picnic area in the Hay-hurst Dis trict, where a delicious supper was enjoyed. Dennis received a nice gift from his friends. The event was held at Ruth Brad ley's Oak Tree Inn. The shower theme was carried out with a Bay ly decorated umbrella on the gift table and tiny umbrella favors. Earl West Complimented On Occasion Of Birthday A very delightful birthday din ner party was given at Umpqua at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Earl West Sunday to honor the birth day of the former. REVIEW ADVERTI8ERS 'lOTui n.H eu Methodist Girls Of Days Creek Dinner Hostesses The King's Daughters Bible Club of the Days Creek Methodist Church recently entertained moth ers at a fried chicken dinner in the social room of the church. Mrs. May Cooper of Cooper's Garden donated flowers and ar ranged them in the room and on the table. The room was also dec orated with pink and white crepe paper. The table was covered with a white cloth and the favor cups were tiny hats. After the dinner, which was ore- pared by Miss Alice Woolley. as- sistea Dy Mrs. Ted Iszier and serv ed by the girls, games were play ed witn prizes going to Mrs. Rob ert Martin, Mrs. Parry Kline and Sally White. The program included a piano solo by Coleen Martin, a clarinet solo by Sally, songs and skits. Nelda Norris Is Married At Family Home On May 27 The wedding of Nelda Jane Nor ris and Leland W. Svarverud Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Svarver ud Sr. of Salem was solemnized Sunday, May 27, at 2 p.m. at the family home in Garden Valley. The bride is the daughter of Mrs. Walter Norris and the late Mr. Norris. The wedding day was the same one chosen by her parents 48 years ago. The bride wore ,a carnation pink dress with white accessories and a pale pink carnation corsage. She carried a white handkerchief that had been carried by her maternal grandmother 74 years ago. The bridal couple was attended by Mr. and Mrs. Everett Wimer, whose son, the Rev. Barney Wim er, a student of the Northwest Christian College in Eugene, per formed the ceremony. The young couple had attended the Rev. Mr. Wimer's ordination service May 6 and this was his first wedding. The vows were exchanged in Three Alpha Theta Members Feted At Chapter Session Alpha Theta Chapter of Beta Sig ma Phi met at the attractive new home of Mrs. Jim Whelchel 2946 W. Sharp, for the last session of the year. It was mentioned that the state convention in Eugene would be at tended by Mrs. Arnold Ryder, Mrs. Don LaBranche, Mrs. Dirk Kruys mun and Miss Sharon Dick. Leo Woodruff, pastor of the church, performed the double ring cere mony at 2 p.m. before 250 friends and relatives of the young couple. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and, Mrs. Cecil Blakely of Eugene. The' bridegroom's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Clair Whelchel of Rose burg. The bride's father gave her in marriage. She was charming in an Alfred Angelo original made of white chiffon with a bodice of Chantilly lace. The floor-length full skirt had insets of lace and came to a chapel train in the back. She wore a fingertip veil secured with a crown of tiny seed pearls. A pale yellow orchid was arranged in the crescent bridal bouquet of white roses. ' Virginia Brooke of Eugene was maid of honor. Cousins of the bride, Sandra Lee Blakely of Rose burg and Carolyn McMahan of Medford, were bridesmaids. An other cousin, Carta Blakely of front of the fireplace. An arrange ment of pink painted daisies and beauty bush graced the mantel. Beside the fireplace was a large white pitcher, which the bride's great - grandmother had brought across the plains, containing beau ty bush, iris and pink peonies. The serving table was covered with a hand crocheted tablecloth, a gift to the bride many years ago. The table was centered with an arrangement of white painted dais ies. All flower arrangements were made by Mrs. Emmett Walters. The bride is head deputy of the Douglas County tax collection de partment and the bridegroom is Douglas County assessor. Present besides the wedding party were Mrs. Walter Norris and Clifford Norris. Following a wedding trip south an open reception will be held June 17 at the Riversdale Grange Hall on the Garden Valley Road from 2 to 4 p.m. roses. Each was given a gift of appreciation as they are out-going members. Others in attendance were Mrs. L. J. Feldkamp, Mrs. Georgene Clark, Miss Jean Crow, Mrs. C. Candleliehters were Kathv Blake ly and Janet Adams, cousins of the bride from Portland. Frank Benson was best man. Ushers were Don Major and Tom Ashley. Kevin Ezarskii of Oakland. Calif., nephew of the bridegroom, was ring nearer. Masses of spring flowers blue gladioli and pale yellow and white spring daisies were arranged in the large floor baskets which were flanked by the traditional candela bra. Presiding at the organ was Mrs. Hazel Mulkey. Solos. "Dearlv Be loved," "0 Promise Me" and "Wed ding Prayer," were sung by Gary Mulkey. Mrs. Ivan Gribskov of Eugene was in charge of the reception which was held at the church fol lowing the wedding ceremony. Pre senting the guest book was Carlie Hall of Oakland. Calif., sister of the bridegroom. The five-tiered wedding cake was cut by Mrs. Forrest McKay. Punch and coffee were served by Ruby BaniKe, Portland; Ins Kienert, Roseburg; Hazel Hughes, Eugene; Mrs. L. C. MaMahon, Medford; and Mrs. Craycroft, Salem. After the wedding, the newly- weds left to honeymoon at King's Surf and Surf Tide on the Ore gon coast. They are now at home at Apt. 9, 447 Chadwick St., Rose burg. The bride was graduated from South Eugene High School and at tended University of Oregon. She is employed as a dental assistant by Dr. Verner Anderson. The bridegroom attended Rose burg schools. He is a partner in Johnson and Whelchel Used Cars, formerly Johnson and Thiele, Roseburg. K OF INTEREST locally is the announcement by Mr. and Mrs. Donald G. Mr. Irv ing was graduated from Rose burg High School and Oregon State University and since :ompletion of his military serv ice has had a position with the Ford Motor Co. and pres ently is in San Mateo, Calif. GERLITZ, pictured above, were honored on their 20th wedding anniversary at an informal reception following Sunday evening church services ot the First Baptist Church. Anniversary Celebrated by Dr. And Mrs. Berlitz One hundred and twenty five members and friends attended a reception in the lower auditorium of the First Baptist Church of Rose burg, Sunday evening following the regular church service for the pastor and his wife, Dr. and Mrs. Eugene F. Gerlitz, honoring their 20th wedding anniversary. Mavis Swanson and Eugene Ger litz were married in Fargo, N.D., June 3, 1912, in the home of her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Helmcr Tinseth, who were present for the reception and who live now in Medford. Another brother-in-law, the Rev. Hersgard from Warren, performed the mar riage ceremony. The Gerlitzes have 3 boys, Eu gene Jr., 18, who is attending Lin field College; Stephen 13, and Har vey 8. The Woman's Missionary Society was in charge of the arrangements with Mrs. Clarence Mobley, presi dent of the society, as chairman. Installation Set For June 9 Ella DeLaVergne and Welling ton DeLaVergne will be installed as worthy matron and worthy pa tron of North Star Chapter 121, Order of the Eastern Star, in a ceremony open to the public. The event will be Saturday, June 9, at 8 p.m. at the Drain Masonic Hall.
