Ag Department Estimates DecSsns 3n Cotton Market By GAYLORD P. GODWIN United Press International WASHINGTON (UPD The Ag riculture Department Wednesday estimated cotton consumption dur ing the 1981-62 marketing season at about M million bales, about 900.000 bales below last season. This dec-line is likely, the de partment said in a review of the cotton situation, because the drop in cotton exports is expected to more than offset a prospective in crease in domestic mill consump tion. The department estimated the supply of cotton for the current season at 21. t million bales, down 400,000 bales front 1360-61. This would provide a carryover on Aug. 1 of. about 7.7 million bales, up 500,000 bales from the carry over a year earlier. Domestic mills will use about 9 million bales during the 1961-62 to 08333 any cat... all tuna liver 'n meat chicken fish meaty mix kidney 'n meat season, compared with 8.3 million bales the previous crop year. The department said mill consumption is greater than a year earlier primarily because of a higher .level of economic activity this season compared with last. Exports of cotton during 1961-62 are expected to total about 5 mil lion bales, about 1.6 million bales less than exported last season. The smaller exports are related to a working down of stocks and estimated smaller consumption in the foreign Free World. The average price received by farmers fur all kinds of cotton from the 1961 crop to April 1, 1962, was 32.8 cents a pound. This is 2.6 cents more than the price in 1960, and, with the ex ception of 1958, is the highest av erage price received by farmers since 1954. The value of lint cotton of the 1961 crup of 14,318,000 bales was 12,348,000,000, up 9 per cent from 1960 and the highest since 1955. The combined value of lint cotton and cottonseed was about $2,653,- 000,000, about 10 per cent higher than the total value for the 1960 crop and the highest value since 1953, The government's investment in price-supported commodities total ed $7,183,657,405 as of April 30. This was about $221.4 million less than the investment a month ago. Ihe investment was made up of $4,722,930,978 in commodities owned outright by the Commodity Credit Corp. and $2,460,726,427 is outstanding on farm products still held by producers. On the same date a year ago the investment was $7,427,918,532. Wheat continued to be the top item in the investment.
