o County Residents Get Big Monthly Stipend From FOA Insurance Plan Even with its comparatively low ' average age of population, Doug las County is receiving benefit pay ments from the federal old-age sur vivors and disability insurance pro gram at a rate of more than $378, 00O a month. i This was the report today from Dean O. Haley, district menager of the Social Security Administra tion office in Eugene. He said statistics on program operations indicate that in Decern- ber 1961, a.bai persons received a total of 5378,014 in benefit pay ments. Haley estimates that more than S4'-j million in benefit pay ments were received in the county during 1961. About one person in every 13 was entitled to a monthly benefit check from the program. She wore clothes, the City Coun cil suggested in a publicity leaflet for tourists. The statement aroused some citizens who are proud of Godiva's legendary nudity. "Not naked?" asked Coventry city historian Abe Jephcott. "Rub bish. I challenge anyone to pro duce facts disputing the naked ride by Lady Godiva." The row was sparked by plans for a pageant in connection with the consecration of the new Co ventry cathedral. A local girl will appear as Lady Godiva and ride through the streets on horseback during the three weeks following the consecration next Friday. She will wear flesh-colored tights and a wig with long flowing hair. Tradition says Lady Godiva, an Ramsey Asks Destruction Of All World's Weapons CANTERBURY, England (AP) Dr. Michael Ramsey, the arch bishop of Canterbury, has called for destruction of all weapons, not just nuclear ones. Entering Britain's ban-the-bomb controversy, the Anglican primate declared himself against one-sided nuclear disarmament by Britain as demanded by a strong move ment in this country. He told a diocesan conference here all Christians face the nuclear dilem ma and have been divided by the issue of keeping or renouncing H weapons. Insisting there is no sim ple, slick answer to the problem, tlie archbishop said: "The only safeguard for peace is the abolition or drastic reduc- Gates Has Day At World Fair SEATTLE (AP) The little community of Gales, Ore. had its day at the Seattle World's Fair Saturday. It started as a graduation party for the Eighth grade, explained Bill Gleason, school principal. Then the town decided the fair would be a great experience for the Sixth and Seventh graders, too. Auctions, paper drives and the like raised the necessary mon ey. "We read in a newspaper about Queen Anne High School's offer to house student groups at a dol lar a head," Gleason said. "That made it easy." The Gates party bedded down in the girls' and boys' gymnasium at the high school, rolling o.it sleep ing bags on tumbling mats. The Gates' budget for the ex pedition is $9 75 a head. .Most of it will be "eaten up" at a pro jected $1 a meal. "They've already be;?un to save for a big Sunday meal." Gleason explained. "It is unlikely that Leofric, be ing a man of great piety and benevolence, would allow his wife to ride naked," the leaflet said. "If America could have re frained from those last tests it would have helped, to rob Russia of the pretext of going on with the tests," he added. He expressed the belief that "Russia cannot want war because war would mean her own destruc tion." The primate acknowledged the sincerity of conscientious Chris tians who, unlike himself, believe in one-sided disarmament. He said: "It (the unilateral view) has its own moral simplicity and direct ness. ..if a nation follows this pol icy it is bound to be ready for all the consequences. ..it means the readiness of a nation to face the destruction or subjugation of its people... "We (Who hold the nonunilater alist view) also have to-be clear what the deterrent can and can not mean. The deterrent is not a one-sided weapon of defense. When once the deterrent were used by one side, general destruc tion would fullow and there would be no difference between winners and losers... "Yet it becomes more and more dangerous to go on relying on this deterrent and we who have relied on it must press on. in praying and working for total disarma ment." He advanced three main argu ments in favor of seeking total, as distinct from only nuclear, dis armament: 1. War today must be ruled out as "an instrument of justice 2. It has become "impossible toiCepted optimistic projections defeat communism merely by military means" but only by "spreading a better way of life." 3. Dangers of war flow not only from nuclear but also from any sort of weapon. Therefore it is fal lacy that if nuclear arms are abolished '"the risk of war will be removed." . British authorities in Hong Kong, claiming the crown colony is jammed with refugees and can not support any more, ordered a crackdown on residents helping fugitives to get through the barbed-wire barricade the British are stringing along the 12-mile border. Conviction for Hong Kong resi dents infiltrating the frontier area or interfering with official efforts to send the refugees back to Red China carries fines of up to $880 or two years in jail. The Free China Relief Associa tion said in Taipei its rcprescnta fives in Hong Kong have started ,0 screen refugees wishing to go j to Formosa for resettlement. The purpose is to select 1.000 persons that the association recently de cided to resettle in Formosa this year. So far Formosa has consented to take only a token number, al though the United Nations has contended the responsibility of taking care of the refugees rests with Chiang Kai-shek's National ist government. One Taipei newspaper, the United Daily News, suggested that -the United States send mem bers of its Peace Corps to Hong Kong to set up a center for dis tributing surplus American farm products to the refugees. In Macao, the government of that small Portuguese colony 40 miles west of Hong Kong said 36.684 Chinese had sought asylum since Jan. 1. It said 33.819 of them had exit permits from Pci ping and the remainder were fugitives. The British businessman s re port of large-scale unemployment in Chinese cities lacked official confirmation. But refugees from China as well as Hong Kong newspaper reports gave a similar picture. SEC Is Probing Brokerage Firm WASHINGTON (AP) Two part- ners of a prominent New York biokerege firm claim they were ignorant of the steadily worsening financial condition of a new com pany in which customers invested $3 million. This testimony was given to the Securities and Exchange Commis sion recently by John D. Dunbar, senior West Coast partner of Shearson, Ha mm ill & Co.; and Richard J. Teweles, Los Angeles manager of the firm. Dunbar and Teweles also told of making personal profits of about $81,300 in the common stock of U.S. Automatic Merchandising Co., (Usamco), Redondo Beach, Calif. However, Teweles suffered an undisclosed loss in Usamco debentures. Usamco shares climbed last year to a high of $19 in over-the-counter trading before plunging to 2.1 cents. Shearson, Ham-mill, a 47 office chain with a New York Stock Exchange membership, was principal dealer in the shares. The Usamco story was aired at public hearings in the SEC study of securities markets. Dunbar was an original director of Usamco and Shearson, Hammill officials said they maintained close relations with the company. Dunbar and Teweles said they ac from Usamco's president, Kichard Stevens, and continued to recom mend the stock (o customers even as the firm was diving deeper into the red. It is now in receivership. Teweles said under questioning, that he heard of one Shearson, Hammill salesman who used glow ing earnings forecasts to predict that the stock would go to $40 a share. He said the earnings fig ures were supplied to brokerage salesmen at a meeting arranged A number of Shearson, Hammill customers are suing the firm in California, alleging that salesmen made false claims in touting the ck.
