July 24 at the home of his pateral grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Blyfhe, in Roseburg. Gifts were given to Barry and birthday refreshments were served to him end to his brother, Tommy Jr.; Valerie .Backlund, Patti Coomes, Vance Backlund, Mrs. Elmer Coomes, Mrs. Paul Backlund, Mr. ond Mrs. Tom Blythe and the hostesses. Barry Is the son of Mr. ond Mrs. Tom Blythe, who have been here from Santo Barbara for 12 days visiting Mr. Blythe's parents. Tom is o former resident ond is now ossistant manager of the J. J. Newberry store in Santa Barbara. Three Men Complimented At Birthday Celebration '" Birthday greetings were the or der of tiie day recently when friends gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Dahack of Tiller for the annual observance . of the birthdays of Leonard B. 3 Proefrock of Tiller, David Crispen of Milo and Alva C. Bowman of Myrtle Creek. Guests arrived laden with cov ered dishes for the politick buffet table which was arranged under the lovely ornamental and shade trees in the Dahacks- garden. Benches had been .arranged near . the bordering flowers and shrubs "for the sealing of guests. Climax at tho feast was the cut ting and serving ot the birthday :. rake honoring the celebrants. Leonard Proefrock had personally made and decorated the special , cake for the occasion. - Adding to the enjoyment for the Crispens was the presence of their grandsons, Robert and Armand " Crispen of Sprague River, who came especially for the celebra tion. The pleasant afternoon and early evening were spent in visiting and admiring the Dahacks' lovely flow ers and shrubs, as well as their interesting rock collections. Jones Reunion Enjoyed The descendants of Charles and Candace Jones, early day pioneers, held their 28th annual reunion Sun day at Stearnes Park in Oakland. Of a family of nine children, four are living. Three who attended the gathering were Mrs. Mabel Neal of Oakland. Calif., and Mrs. Alice Weatherly and Sam Jones of Oakland, Ore. Kelley Jones of Pen dleton was unable to be present. A potluck picnic, business and greeting new members rounded out the day. One hundred nine family mem bers and guests attended the affair. Mr. and Mrs. Earl (Buck) Jones of Coos Bay were elected presi dent and secretary-treasurer for ine coming year. 40th Anniversary Observed Friday At Stewart Park On Friday night a picnic at Stewart Park was held to honor Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Cloake on the occasion of their 40th wedding anniversary. V. Berggreen, Mrs. Edward Sitton and the host and hostess, Mr. and Mrs. O. J. r eiakamp. .Going-Away Party At Tiller Honors Donald Koten Family Mr. and Mrs. Donald E. Kotcn and daughter of Tiller were the inspiration for a going-away picnic and parly Saturday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert D. Claus en and children at the Tiller Ranger Station. Forest Service personnel from the Tiller vicinity and their fam ilies, 78 in all, gathered for a pot luck picnic in the Clauson yard. Rangers llillard M, I.illigren and John O. Wilson presided as chefs at the portable barbecue grills. Covered dishes contributed by each family rounded out the delicious f menu sorved buffet-style. In the evening, guests enjoyed dancing and games in the rumpus " room of the Clauson home. Highlight of the evening was a pre-arranged series of questions . asked by the Clausons, who are newly-arrived residents of the Ranger Station, and directed to the Kotens. The questions were for the purpose of acquainting the Clnus- i ,,ons witn tneir new environment. - The honored guests received a set of myrtlcwood bookonds as a going-away gift. The evening was concluded with the serving of de licious refreshments. Out-of-town visitors coming es pecially for the event were Ranger nd Mrs. Gene Carlson and two children of Steamboat Ranger Sta tion, and Mr. and Mrs. Larry Hen drickson and two daughters of Roseburg, the latter family re maining overnight as guests of Mr. and Mrs. Malilon R. Hale and family. Both visiting families for merly resided at the Tiller Ranger Station. The Kotens plan to leave in mid August for the East, making a leisurely trip in order to visit rel atives. They plan to meet his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. I. A. Kolen, of Naperville, 111., who will be vaca tioning at Three Lakes, Wis. They will also visit Mrs. Koten'3 par ents, Mr. ana jvirs. George is. Schanabel, who live in Washing ton, D.U. About September S, they will ar rive in Syracuse. N.Y.. where Ko ten will attend State University of new YorK at .Syracuse University, taking graduate study in forestry working toward a masters lc gree. They plan to return to Til lcr next summer, and Koten will resume his work on the staff of the South Umpqua Ranger District. Miss Carmen Cooper Wed In Pennsylvania On July 8 m Miss Carmen Cooper, daughter of Roy T. Cooper of Winston, and Richard Rusnak, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gustav Rusnak of Johns town, Pa., wero married July 8. Tho double ring ceremony was . performed in Holy Cross Lutheran .Church of Johnstown by the Rev. Paul Kishner, pastor. Attendants were Miss Edna Mae Steinke, con 4l sin of the bridegroom, and George Johns of Pittsburg, Pa. The bride was graduated from Roseburg High School and worked I for two years as a student X-ray technician in Mercy Hospital at Roseburg, Following her enlist ment in the Woman's Army Corps, she received further X-ray training both in the South and at , Fitzsimmons Hospital in Denver, Colo. She has recently been sta tioned at Ft. Richie, Maryland. 4 'Her husband has just completed one term of service in the Mili tary Police division of the U.S. Army and has re-enlisted in the Air Corps. Following tho wedding, a dinner for 70 guests and relatives was served in Westmont Dairy Dell. A reception was held in tho eve ning in the Rusnak residence. The young couple honeymooned at the Twin Pine Guest Ranch in Stroudburg, Pa., in the Pocono Mountains. They will depart later uus montn lor Ft. Rucker, Ala. Buckeroos Slate Weekend Picnic The Burkeroo Square Dance Club will hold its annual picnic Aug. 12-13 at the Ray John ranch on the North Umpqua. Members who wish will camp out Saturday night. A Sunday break fast will be enjoyed by all those on deck for the event. The Sunday picnic will be held at 1 p.m. Games, swimming and other activities will be on the pro gram. Leonard Churchill is gen eral chairman. The committee would like to know how many to expect and inose planning to attend may call a committee member or an officer of the club or sign up at The Barn. Church Barbecue Enjoyed Saturday At Dixonville A large group of parents and children of the Pine Grove Church held a barbecue and potluck din ner at the Lloyd North homo on Burkhorn Road Saturday evening. Those attending were Mr. and Mrs. Ed Karcher and sons; Mr. and Mrs-. Elward Smith and daugh ters; Mrs. Clethda Hamer and daughter; Mr. and M. Jack Bus enbark, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas. Visit ing was enjoyed during the availing. TERRY JACK HANFORD, 13 yero-old son of Dr. and Mrs. Roy E. Hanford of Roseburg, has returned home from a three-week vacotion in Honolulu, where he was the house guest of Miss Mary Anne Bocken, who is teaching school there this summer. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Backen of this city. They made many interesting trips around the islands including the largest island, Ha waii, where they sow the active volcano. Indian Theme Is Feature Of Shower For Mrs. Savage Mrs. Virtus Savage of Buckhorn, Road was honored at a pink and blue shower Monday at the Pine Grove Church. Shower decorations carried out in the Indian theme. The gift table was arranged with a large brown tepee in the center, sur rounded with green grass. Gifts were placed in and around the tepee. Lovely late summer flow ers were placed about the rooms and on the serving table. Visitors Complimented At Picnic At Kruses' The pleasant back yard of the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Kruse was the scene of a delightful pic nic Wednesday evening. The oc casion was to honor Dr. and Mrs. Robert Wallin of Pacific Palisades. Calif., and Mr. and Mrs. David Wallin ot New Haven, Conn., both of whom have been visiting the men's parents, Dr. and Mrs. N. C. Wallin, on Fisher Road. The 6:30 p.m. potluck affair was served to those previously men tioned and Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Stark, Mr. and Mrs. Don Kruse, Jeff, Denny and Karen; Mr. and Mrs. Neil Christian and Greg, Mark and Dean; and Mrs. Dale Guiley. Visiting was enjoyed dur ing the pleasant evening hours. Shower Slated Friends of Maxina Vance of Ten- mile are invited to attend a bridal shower in her honor next Monday at the ladies clubhouse in Ten- mile. The shower is being sponsor ed by several friends. Reunion Date Set The Turpin family reunion has been slated for Sunday. Aug. 13 at the Drain Community Hall. PST, i eher were in charge of decorations, Mrs. Wadsworth arranged the flowers, Mrs. Van Voorst and Mrs. Kincaid had charge of the refresh ments and Mrs. Radcliffe t oo k care of the program which con sisted of two musical numbers and two games. Prize winners in the games were Mrs. Morehead, Mrs. Krueger and Mrs. Hatfield. Younger Set Has Dance Saturday The most interesting affair of the week for the younger set was the Junior High School dance, car rying out the theme, "Beachcomb ers Hop " held from 7:30 to 10:30 Saturday night at the YMCA. The committee in charge of the event include-1. Peggy O'Neil, Bar bara Terho, T.arry Rand, Yurgan Fowler and Jim Richmond. John Johnson is advisor and coordina tor for the group. A palm tree with a beachcomber background, lighted by a spotlight, formed the decorations for the oc casion. "Yogi" (Barry Serafin) from KRNR was announcer and master of ceremonies for the af fair. Mr. and Mrs. Paulus McKee, Mr. and Mrs. Rand and Mr. and Mrs. R. H. O'Neil were chaperones Special music for entertainment during the evening was by Danny Fromdahl and Ralph Sallee. Mrs. Hall Feted At Bridal Shower The lovely home of Mrs. O. 1 Van Horn in Winchester was the setting for a bridal shower for Mrs. Dale Hall, the former Sandra Lilcs, who was married June 28, in Reno, Nev. Hostesses for the event were Mrs. O. P. Van Horn, Miss Gloria Gay Van Horn and Mrs. LeRoy Biles. Bride games were played with prizes going to Mrs. Fred Finster and Mrs. Carl Havens. Freese, Myrtle Creek, announce the engagement ond approaching mar riage of their daughter Sharon Lynne, to Airman 3C Walter O'Mealy, son of Mr. and Mrs. George O'Mealy, ; also of Myrtle Creek. The wedding will be June 17, 1962. The date was chosen to coincide with the 56th anniversary of the bride-elect's moternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. R. F. Muskopf of Corning Calif., and the third anniversary of her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Freese of Gilchrist. The bride-elect is a senior at Myrtle Creek High School and Walter was graduated from Myrtle Creek High School in 1960 and is now home on leave. Navy Men, Families Enjoy Picnic Held At Park The first local potluck picnic supper for retired U.S. Navy men and their families was held recent ly at Umpqua Park: The affair was arranged and organized by Chief Del Hockersmith and Chief Bob Lewis, Navy recruiters of Roseburg. The event was termed a suc cess. Attending were 24 retired Navy men and their wives and children, 80 in all, and all from Roseburg. The many varieties of foods were arranged buffet-style on ta bles covered with white table cloths. The two beautiful center pieces were a large natural Cuban bamboo flower holder filled with colorful gladioli and an oblong mahogany dish from Haiti con- flower, Calif. taining an exotio vegetable ar rangement. Following the supper, many gath ered to watch interesting Navy movies shown by Chief Lewis, while others reminisced and ex changed sea stories. It is anticipated that this will be a yearly affair. Picnic Dinner Enjoyed Mr. and Mrs. George Mill and daughter of Glendale were hosts at a picnic dinner held under the trees in her yard recently. Those present were her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Young: Mrs. Young's brother, Fred Biggs of Redondo Beach, Calif., and his granddaugh ter.
